Test the connection, then choose a recovery plan that matches the failure.
Diagnose the failure before changing FFmpeg settings
A dropped YouTube stream is not automatically an FFmpeg configuration problem. Check the encoder, the source, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and the outbound connection in that order. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, CPU load, dashboard errors, and a local archive; if the output is healthy but the connection test indicates a problem, contact your ISP (YouTube troubleshooting guidance).

- Record what happened. Note the timestamp, whether FFmpeg exited or remained running, the relevant end of its error output, FFmpeg version/build information, and whether the input or local recording stayed healthy. Redact the YouTube stream key from commands, logs, and screenshots before sharing them.
- Check the source and encoder. Confirm that the input still plays and that a local recording, if configured, remains intact. Check CPU load and whether FFmpeg reports encoding or input errors. A damaged or stalled source points away from the broadband path.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Read the stream-health messages and dashboard errors around the failure. These can help distinguish an ingest issue from a problem upstream of YouTube.
- Test outbound connectivity. If the source and encode are healthy but the upload path is failing, test the connection and consult your ISP. A bitrate change cannot restore a broadband route that is unavailable.
This sequence does not establish a single cause for Indian broadband outages: the cause and local network conditions vary. The sources cited here do not provide an India-specific outage rate or a recovery-time figure.

Choose a recovery method for the layer that failed

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation lists options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their behavior is protocol-dependent and documented for network-resource operations; do not assume they make an RTMP live output resume after every interruption.

Check reconnect support in your installed build
Verify the actual protocol and options supported by your FFmpeg build using its documentation and ffmpeg -h. Distinguish input reconnection from output reconnection: retrying a network input does not inherently repair publishing to YouTube. If FFmpeg terminates, a process supervisor can restart it, but test the complete sequence first and make sure it does not open a competing live session.
Set a bitrate your measured upload can sustain
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. On the page accessed October 3, 2026, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations list 3 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband performance or a guarantee of a stable connection.

- Measure sustained upload capacity under conditions representative of the live stream, rather than relying on a single best-case speed result.
- Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s corresponding recommendation row and the capacity your connection can actually sustain.
- Leave practical headroom for upload variability and other household traffic. This is a precaution, not a fixed margin published by YouTube.
- Run a preflight using video movement and audio representative of the stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health status.
YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Lowering bitrate may help when the connection is overloaded, but it will not fix an ISP outage.
Use YouTube backup ingest only for ingest-path redundancy
The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation provides primary and backup ingestion addresses for supported ingest protocols and allows the same content to be sent to the backup address. This is redundancy at the ingest destination, not a substitute for internet service from your location: if your broadband path is unavailable, a second YouTube endpoint cannot receive your video.

If you configure primary and backup streams, match their relevant settings. YouTube says: “Your primary and backup streams must have the exact same settings for failover to work properly.” Its live-error guidance calls out resolution, codecs, interlacing/profile, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio parameters. Follow the current settings guidance for the stream you configure; mismatched feeds can prevent failover from working as intended (YouTube live error messages).

If diagnosis points to the primary ISP route, an independently routed mobile-data or other internet service may help only when it remains available and can sustain the stream. Suitability depends on the exact location, carrier coverage, power, data allowance, and whether the alternate service shares infrastructure with the failing path. Those details are not established for any particular Indian reader here, so check local coverage and test the alternate route before relying on it.
