Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf FFmpeg stays on “connecting” when you send a YouTube stream from Hetzner Cloud, check the active YouTube stream URL and key first, then verify RTMPS and port 443, inspect the instance’s outbound firewall rules, and confirm your FFmpeg build and command support the chosen output. A connection timeout is not the same as poor stream health: first establish whether FFmpeg reaches YouTube, then troubleshoot the video and audio settings.
There is no command or error log here to identify one specific root cause. The checks below narrow it down without exposing your stream key.

1. Confirm the active YouTube destination and stream key
Use the values for the broadcast you are actually starting—not an endpoint copied from an old command, a different stream, or an unrelated example. YouTube’s third-party encoder troubleshooting directs creators to get a stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder when startup fails.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the intended broadcast or stream.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and use its current stream key in FFmpeg.
- If you are using RTMPS, check that the URL begins with
rtmps://, notrtmp://, and preserve the hostname shown for that stream. - Keep the key private. Redact it from commands, screenshots, and logs before sharing them.
YouTube advises checking the URL when the encoder reports a connection timeout or SSL error. Its RTMPS guidance also explains how to use the stream URL and key with an encoder.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
2. Check RTMPS port and hostname
For YouTube RTMPS, the protocol, hostname, and TLS connection all matter. Google documents RTMPS on port 443 and requires the server hostname for SNI during TLS authentication. If your encoder or URL format requires an explicit port, try :443 with the hostname supplied in Live Control Room; do not replace that hostname with an IP address or a guessed server.
YouTube’s recommendation is direct: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

3. Inspect the Hetzner Cloud Firewall’s outbound rules
Check the firewall attached to the server running FFmpeg. Hetzner’s documented behavior depends on whether you have custom firewall rules: without custom rules, outbound NEW connections are allowed by default; with custom rules, outbound NEW connections are dropped unless explicitly allowed. Existing established or related traffic is handled separately. An inbound allow rule does not open outbound traffic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- In the Hetzner Cloud Console, inspect the firewall attached to the instance.
- If it has custom rules, verify that an outbound rule permits the protocol and destination port required by your selected YouTube endpoint. For RTMPS, that means allowing the required outbound connection to port 443.
- Check that you are changing the rules on the firewall actually attached to this instance, not merely another firewall in the project.
- Retry FFmpeg after the rule is in place. If the connection still times out, continue with protocol and command checks rather than assuming the firewall was the only issue.
See Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall documentation for the outbound default and custom-rule behavior.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
4. Verify FFmpeg and the output command
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP URL syntax and publishing, but that does not prove a particular installed binary supports the protocol or options your command uses. Confirm the binary’s build capabilities, destination URL, output format, and stream mapping. FFmpeg documents the relevant syntax in its RTMP protocol reference.
- Check the FFmpeg version and build configuration on the Hetzner instance.
- Confirm the output URL uses the active YouTube server URL and the correct, private stream key.
- Confirm that the output muxer and mapped audio/video streams match the media you are sending.
- Review the full, sanitized stderr for the first connection, TLS, or output error—not only the final “connecting” status.
There is not enough information to prescribe a safe replacement command: the source command, media inputs, FFmpeg build, and stderr determine the correct syntax. Do not post a complete URL or command containing your unredacted key.

5. Distinguish a connection failure from poor stream health
A stream that never establishes a connection is a transport problem to investigate through the URL, TLS, DNS/connectivity, and outbound firewall. If FFmpeg connects and YouTube receives data but reports poor stream health, move to encoder output, error messages, CPU load, outbound connection quality, and media settings. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting and live encoder settings guidance cover those health checks.
YouTube’s general encoder guidance includes H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and keyframe intervals no longer than four seconds. These are media-encoding recommendations; changing them does not repair a TCP or TLS connection that never reaches YouTube. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the settings applicable to your stream.

6. Consider HLS only when your encoder needs it
HLS is not a default workaround for an unexplained RTMPS connection failure. YouTube documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs RTMP does not support, provided the encoder supports HLS. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream, so it has higher latency. Use it when your format or encoder requirement calls for it, not as a substitute for checking a broken URL, key, TLS setup, or egress rule. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Connection timeout | Active server URL, URL scheme, hostname, port, and Hetzner outbound rules | Use the selected stream’s current URL; for RTMPS, verify hostname and outbound port 443. |
| SSL or TLS error | Whether the destination is RTMPS and the server hostname is preserved for TLS/SNI | Correct the scheme and hostname using the values in Live Control Room. |
| Encoder fails to start | Selected stream key and destination | Refresh the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Never share the key. |
| FFmpeg connects, but YouTube reports poor health | Encoder stderr, CPU load, outbound connection, codec, bitrate mode, audio codec, and keyframe interval | Use YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting and settings guidance; do not treat media tuning as a fix for a connection that never establishes. |
| Still stuck after these checks | Sanitized command and stderr, FFmpeg version/build configuration, redacted URL scheme/hostname/port, DNS/TLS/connectivity results, attached firewall rules, and Live Control Room status | Collect these details to isolate the remaining cause. The symptom alone cannot establish which component is failing. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos while your Hetzner VM and FFmpeg command are offline, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home; playback runs from the cloud.
- Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
See StreamNeo for the service details, or start the free first day.
