Unplug the Echo for 30 seconds, then reconnect it using its supplied power adapter. If it still will not connect, check whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi: that quickly separates a likely network problem from an Echo-specific one. Work through the reversible checks below before considering a reset, whose steps vary by model.
1. Restart the Echo and check the Wi-Fi connection
- Restart the Echo. Unplug its power, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in with the supplied power adapter. Amazon recommends this restart in its Echo setup troubleshooting guidance.
- Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. Try a phone or another device using the same network name. If that device also cannot connect, the problem is more likely with the router or internet service than with the Echo alone.
- If multiple devices are offline, restart the router. Once it is back online, restart the Echo and check again. If the broader outage continues, check with your internet provider.
2. If other devices work, check placement and interference
Move the Echo closer to the router and try reconnecting. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router and away from potential sources of interference such as microwaves and baby monitors. This is a troubleshooting guideline, not a guarantee of signal coverage in every home.

You can also temporarily turn off a few other devices connected to Wi-Fi and see whether the Echo reconnects. This is a diagnostic check; by itself, it does not show that the router needs replacing.
3. Confirm the password and saved network
If other devices connect successfully, confirm that you are using the correct Wi-Fi password. If you recently changed the router password, update the network saved on the Echo in the Alexa app:

- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Select the Echo, then open Device Settings.
- Choose Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.
- Select a saved network or choose Join another Wi-Fi Network, then follow the app’s instructions.
Echo devices with screens have separate setup guidance, so use the instructions for that device rather than assuming these app steps apply.
4. Try another Wi-Fi band if your router shows separate networks
If your router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try connecting the Echo to the other network. Amazon says Echo speakers connect to common home 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks using 802.11a/b/g/n standards, but support depends on the particular device and network compatibility. Switching bands is a reversible test, not a required fix for every Echo.

5. For a first-time setup failure
Make sure the Alexa app is current, repeat the network and placement checks above, and restart the Echo. Amazon’s setup troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying a phone hotspot during setup. If several devices cannot connect to your home Wi-Fi, focus on the router or internet service instead.
6. Reset only after the other checks fail
Reset methods differ among Echo models, and a factory reset can erase personal settings and smart-home connections. Identify your exact model and follow its model-specific instructions on Amazon’s Echo reset help page before proceeding. Do not rely on generic button combinations: an instruction for one generation may not apply to another.
