How to Fix an ASUS Laptop Touchpad That Won’t Work in Windows 11

Work through eight ASUS touchpad checks, from Windows settings and MyASUS to model-specific drivers, BIOS testing, and service diagnosis.

If your ASUS laptop touchpad has stopped working in Windows 11, first check its keyboard shortcut and the Windows Touchpad setting. Then check MyASUS if your model supports it, followed by ASUS’s model-specific driver and BIOS guidance. If the pad also fails in BIOS or UEFI, it may need hardware diagnosis.

Start with the touchpad’s on/off controls

1. Check the keyboard shortcut

Look across the function keys for a touchpad icon. ASUS says the shortcut is commonly on F6 or F9, but its location and whether it requires the Fn key vary by laptop. Use the key or key combination shown in your model’s manual, then check whether an on-screen notification indicates the touchpad is enabled. Don’t assume one shortcut works across all ASUS laptops.

If the model-specific shortcut does not respond, ASUS identifies the ASUS System Control Interface driver as a possible factor. Continue with the settings and driver checks below rather than repeatedly trying an unverified key combination. See ASUS’s touchpad troubleshooting instructions.

2. Turn on Touchpad in Windows settings

  1. Search Windows for Touchpad settings and open the result.
  2. Make sure the Touchpad switch is set to On.
  3. If a mouse is connected, check Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.
  4. If the pad works but gestures or interactions behave oddly, review the available gesture settings. Windows 11 also provides an option to reset touchpad settings and gestures to their defaults.

ASUS documents these controls in its Windows touchpad troubleshooting guide and touchpad feature guide.

3. Check MyASUS, if the control is available

Open MyASUS > Device Settings > Input Device Settings and set Touchpad to Unlock, if that option appears. MyASUS may not be installed, and ASUS notes that Device Settings is not available on every model. If the menu or control is missing, skip this step. A NumberPad Lock option, if present, relates to the touchpad’s numeric keypad feature rather than being a universal touchpad power switch. See ASUS’s troubleshooting steps.

Apply ASUS checks for your exact laptop

4. Follow the model-specific BIOS and EC instructions

ASUS includes restoring BIOS defaults and performing an Embedded Controller (EC) reset among its troubleshooting steps. Changed or corrupted BIOS settings can affect system operation, but these procedures are more involved than checking a Windows switch. Look up the instructions for your exact laptop model on ASUS Support; do not use a key sequence or reset procedure meant for another model. The ASUS guide is titled “[Notebook] Troubleshooting – Touchpad abnormal problems” and was last updated April 7, 2026.

5. Disconnect peripherals and check for updates

Disconnect external devices and check for available BIOS, Windows, and driver updates if the basic controls did not restore the pad. Microsoft lists a missing or outdated touchpad driver as one possible cause and recommends Windows Update as the preferred way to update touchpad drivers; Device Manager is another option. Use the Windows Update controls available on your Windows 11 system, and follow ASUS guidance for BIOS and model-specific packages. See Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting guidance and ASUS’s update guidance.

6. Get drivers for the exact ASUS model

Find the laptop’s model number and enter it on the ASUS Support site before downloading drivers. ASUS lists Intel I2C under Chipset and ASUS Precision Touchpad under Pointing Device for applicable models. The Intel I2C step does not apply to laptops with AMD processors. If Intel I2C is not listed on the support page, ASUS says Windows may already provide the Serial IO controller driver. Available packages depend on the model, so don’t install a driver intended for a different laptop.

Check touchpad devices in Device Manager

7. Enable or reinstall only relevant components

In Windows 11, open Device Manager and look under Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices. Depending on the laptop, ASUS’s troubleshooting guidance may involve Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller (where applicable), ASUS Precision Touchpad, and Microsoft Input Configuration Device.

  • If a relevant device is disabled, use its Device Manager menu to enable it.
  • If the problem continues, ASUS describes uninstalling the relevant component and restarting so it can be detected and reinstalled. Microsoft also explains that Windows Update may fetch a touchpad driver after reinstallation.
  • Do not uninstall unrelated devices. For update or reinstall paths, follow Microsoft’s instructions and the steps for your model in ASUS’s guide.

Decide whether to restore Windows or seek service

8. Reserve restore or reset for later

If the touchpad problem began recently and Windows has a restore point from before it started, ASUS suggests using System Restore. ASUS places a PC reset after the earlier troubleshooting steps; back up personal files before resetting Windows. Use ASUS’s instructions for your model and Windows configuration rather than treating a reset as a first-line fix. See ASUS’s troubleshooting guide.

Test in BIOS or UEFI to help identify a hardware issue

ASUS says that if the touchpad remains nonfunctional in BIOS or UEFI, a hardware problem is possible and recommends diagnosis at an authorized ASUS service center. If it works in BIOS but stops after Windows loads, ASUS directs troubleshooting back toward Windows and drivers. This test can help distinguish where to focus next, but it is not a guarantee that the touchpad is either fully healthy or definitely defective. Follow your laptop model’s ASUS instructions for entering BIOS or UEFI.
