An ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) server that will not start usually fails in one of five places: the process exits immediately, the server crashes while loading a map or mod, a service manager launches it from the wrong path, the host runs out of resources, or the process starts but cannot be reached. The fastest reliable fix is to save the final log lines, launch once with every mod disabled, verify the executable and working directory, validate the installation, and only then troubleshoot ports and firewalls.

First, identify what “won’t start” means
Do not treat every symptom as the same failure. A server that exits before opening a port needs a different remedy from a server that reaches a successful startup message but does not appear in the browser.

| Observed symptom | Most likely stage | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The process closes immediately and leaves little or no output | Executable, launch command, permissions, missing files, or service path | Capture the complete console output and final log lines; verify the executable path and working directory |
| The process begins loading a map or mods, then crashes | Mod, map, corrupted file, incompatible update, or resource exhaustion | Repeat a clean launch with all mods disabled and inspect the crash files |
| A service reports failure before the game process appears | Service-manager configuration, account permissions, environment, or path | Check the service unit’s executable, WorkingDirectory, user, and recent service log |
| The process stays running but the server is absent from the browser | Query port, firewall, router forwarding, server filters, or discovery delay | Confirm bound ports and network rules; this is not normally a binary startup failure |
| The host becomes unresponsive or the process is killed | Insufficient RAM, disk space, or another system limit | Check memory pressure, free storage, and operating-system event logs immediately after the attempt |
Write down the exact map, server build, operating system, launch method, and the last visible log line. Those details prevent a later change from hiding the original cause.
Save the evidence before restarting
Repeated restart loops can overwrite useful context. On the next failure, stop and preserve the evidence before changing files.

- Copy the complete console output from the failed launch.
- Open the server log and record its final lines, including the first error, module name, map name, and any file path.
- Note whether the process exited, crashed, or remained running.
- Record the exact server build or update that was installed immediately before the problem.
- Check for a newly created crash dump or crash-report directory and keep a copy.
- Write down available RAM and free disk space at the time of failure.
On a systemd-managed Linux installation, a command such as journalctl -u ark-server --no-pager -n 200 can show the latest service output; use the actual unit name configured on your host. On Windows, use the service’s configured log location and Event Viewer to preserve application and service errors. Do not delete saves or configuration files while you are still establishing the failure stage.
Test a clean launch with no mods
A no-mod launch is the quickest way to separate a core-server problem from a mod problem. Disable every ASA mod in the launch configuration or service definition, then start the same map with the same basic settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the clean server starts
The executable, map, and base installation are probably functional. Restore mods in small groups rather than all at once. After each group starts successfully, stop the server, add the next group, and compare the final log lines if it fails. When one group causes the crash, test those mods one at a time.
- Confirm that each mod is built for ASA, not for the older ARK edition.
- Check that the numeric mod ID in the launch configuration matches the publisher’s current ID.
- Check the installed version against the server build and the mod’s current release.
- Remove duplicate or partially downloaded copies before testing again.
- Keep the known-good no-mod configuration so you can recover quickly.
Use the expected ASA mod folder layout
ASA expects a mod folder under ShooterGame/Mods/<mod-folder>/, with the mod’s .uplugin file directly inside that expected folder. A nested directory, an extra archive layer, or a folder copied from another game edition can make the server fail during mod discovery.

Compare the folder name, ID, and files with the installation guide for the mod. If automatic mod management is enabled, make sure the service account can create and update that directory and that the working directory points to the installation root. Downloading a mod again is safer than deleting worlds or player data.
If the clean server also fails
Disable the mod theory and move to the launch command, map files, installation integrity, resources, and prerequisites. Do not spend time changing mod IDs when the same crash occurs with an empty mod list.

A correct executable can still fail when a script or service starts it from the wrong directory. Verify every part of the launch definition rather than copying a command from an older ARK installation.
Check these launch parameters
- Executable: confirm that the path points to the ASA dedicated-server binary, not a client executable or an obsolete ARK edition.
- Map argument: use the exact map name supported by the installed build. A typo or an unavailable map can stop loading before the server binds its ports.
- Mod arguments: temporarily remove every mod argument for the clean test, then restore IDs in controlled groups.
- Port arguments: make sure game, query, and optional RCON values are numeric, unique on the host, and consistent with firewall and router rules.
- Quoting and separators: inspect spaces, punctuation, and shell escaping. A service may interpret a map or option as a separate command when quoting is wrong.
Set the service working directory
The ARK dedicated-server documentation notes that the “WorkingDirectory option is required to fix some issues.” This matters particularly when a systemd service, a wrapper script, or -automanagedmods is used. Set the working directory to the ASA installation root, then verify that relative paths such as ShooterGame/Mods, configuration folders, logs, and saved data resolve there.

After changing the unit, reload the service manager, start the service once, and inspect the new log instead of immediately restarting it. Confirm that the service account has read and execute access to the binary and read/write access to the directories used for saves, logs, and automatic mod downloads. A command that works interactively but fails as a service often indicates a different user, environment, or current directory.
Containers and managed panels
Containers and hosting panels add another path and permission layer. Verify the image’s ASA build, the mounted installation and save directories, the startup command, and the ports exposed from the container to the host. A panel showing “running” only proves that its wrapper process is alive; read the game process log to confirm that the server reached map initialization and port binding.

Use the distribution tool that installed the server to validate or reinstall its files. Validation can replace damaged binaries and missing dependencies without touching saves when the tool is configured correctly.
- Stop the server and make a backup of saved worlds, configuration files, and any custom scripts.
- Record the current server build and the exact error from the failed launch.
- Run the installation tool’s file-validation operation for the ASA server.
- Start once with no mods and the simplest supported map.
- If validation reports repeated failures, reinstall only after confirming that backups and configuration copies are complete.
If the failure began immediately after an update, do not assume that deleting files is the fix. Preserve the build number and error first. An update can expose an incompatible mod, an old launch argument, or an operating-system dependency; replacing files without recording that context makes the cause harder to identify.

Check host requirements and resource exhaustion
Software integrity does not compensate for a host that lacks memory, storage, or required system libraries. Check resources while the server is starting, not only when it is idle.
Windows requirements and drivers
Studio Wildcard’s Windows troubleshooting guidance lists Windows 10 or 11, DirectX 12, at least 16 GB of memory, 32 GB of recommended memory, and 70 GB of available storage for the game client. These figures are useful capacity warnings, but a dedicated server’s actual usage varies with map, player count, mods, and other services sharing the machine. Keep additional headroom instead of treating the minimum as a target.
Update the graphics and chipset drivers used by the host where applicable, and install pending Windows updates. Studio Wildcard specifically states that “Outdated drivers are also a common reason ARK might crash.” A driver update will not fix a wrong port or a malformed service path, so treat driver work as a separate branch after logs and launch configuration have been checked.
Linux libraries and certificates
The ARK Official Community Wiki documents glibc 2.17 as a requirement for the Linux dedicated server. Verify the distribution’s glibc version and architecture before troubleshooting game files. A compatibility layer or container must expose a compatible library set; otherwise the process can exit before meaningful game logging begins.
Windows Server installations also need current TLS and certificate support for downloading or updating server and mod content. Certificate or trust-store failures can look like an automatic-mod-management failure even when the game binary is healthy. Test the account that runs the service, because its certificate store and network permissions may differ from those of an administrator’s interactive session.
Memory, storage, and operating-system limits
- Check free disk space on the volume containing the server, saves, logs, and mod cache. An update may need temporary space beyond the final installation size.
- Check available RAM and swap/pagefile activity during map and mod loading. A process killed without a useful game error often indicates operating-system memory pressure.
- Review Windows Event Viewer or Linux kernel logs for out-of-memory kills, filesystem errors, and permission denials.
- Exclude the server’s log and save directories from aggressive cleanup jobs that can remove files while the process is running.
- Keep backups on a different volume or host so a full disk does not destroy both the live world and its recovery copy.
Separate startup from network reachability
Once the console shows that the map loaded and the process remains running, stop changing binaries. A server that starts locally but is absent from the browser is usually facing a query-port, firewall, router-forwarding, filter, or discovery issue.
Confirm the configured ports
ASA commonly uses a game port and a separate query port; RCON is optional. Use the values in the launch command and configuration rather than assuming defaults. Confirm that no other process already owns each port and that the server is bound to the expected network interface.
- Check game, query, and optional RCON ports for conflicts on the host.
- Allow the server executable and those ports through the host firewall for the correct network profile.
- Forward the same external ports on the router to the server’s fixed local address when players connect from outside the LAN.
- Test from a different network; a server may be reachable inside the LAN but blocked by router loopback or ISP filtering.
- Use the correct browser filters, map, and unofficial-server settings when searching for the instance.
Why port forwarding cannot repair an early crash
Firewall rules and router forwarding affect reachability after the process binds its sockets. They cannot make a binary that exits during mod loading start successfully. Fix the process and map-loading stage first, then verify discovery with network tests.
Use a remedy that matches the failure stage
| Remedy | Best fit | Reversibility and burden |
|---|---|---|
| Save logs and run no-mod launch | Unknown cause or crash during loading | Highly reversible; preserves evidence and avoids destructive changes |
| Restore mods in small groups | Clean launch works, modded launch fails | Reversible; requires version and ID tracking |
Correct executable and WorkingDirectory |
Service failure, relative-path errors, automatic mod management | Reversible; requires service reload and permission checks |
| Validate or reinstall files | Corruption, missing binaries, failed update | Validation is low risk; reinstall requires verified backups |
| Increase resources or remove competing workloads | Out-of-memory kills, full disk, host instability | May involve recurring cost or migration; confirm measurements first |
| Open and forward ports | Process runs but players cannot discover or join | Reversible; adds firewall and router maintenance |
| Move to managed hosting | You cannot maintain updates, backups, service files, or network rules | Reduces administration but limits some host-level control; confirm ASA version and mod support before moving |
Choose the least destructive remedy that matches the evidence. Disabling mods and correcting a path preserve more recovery options than deleting a world or rebuilding the entire host.
Platform-specific recovery checklists
Windows self-host
- Stop any duplicate ASA server processes.
- Launch the dedicated server directly once, without mods, and save the console output.
- Check Windows Event Viewer for application crashes, memory failures, and service-account errors.
- Verify DirectX 12, current Windows updates, drivers, free storage, and available memory.
- Recreate the service or scheduled task only after the direct launch succeeds; set its start-in or working-directory field to the ASA installation root.
- Open the configured game and query ports in Windows Firewall, then test from outside the local network.
Linux or systemd host
- Confirm the server binary’s architecture and the host’s glibc version, including the documented glibc 2.17 requirement.
- Run the binary manually from the installation root with mods disabled to distinguish a game failure from a unit-file failure.
- Inspect the unit’s executable path,
WorkingDirectory, user, environment, restart policy, and write permissions. - Read the journal after one failed start and preserve the final lines before another attempt.
- Check kernel messages for out-of-memory kills and filesystem errors.
- After a successful local start, apply firewall rules and router forwarding for the configured ports.
Container or managed host
- Confirm that the image or panel supports the current ASA server build.
- Verify persistent mounts for saved worlds, configuration, logs, and mods.
- Check the startup command and container-to-host port mappings.
- Ensure the service account can update automatic mods and write crash reports.
- Ask the host operator for the process log and exit code, not only the panel’s health status.
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
- Restarting without reading the previous failure: this can overwrite the only useful final log lines.
- Deleting saves as a first step: saves rarely cause an immediate executable or service-path failure, and deletion is difficult to undo.
- Opening ports before proving the process runs: networking cannot fix a crash during map or mod loading.
- Restoring every mod at once: it removes the ability to identify the incompatible ID or version.
- Using a client requirement as a server guarantee: the 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommendation describe the Windows client guidance; server demand depends on workload.
- Running a service from an arbitrary directory: relative paths then point to the wrong mod, configuration, or save folders.
- Assuming an update is harmless: record the exact build because update timing can identify a compatibility break.
Prevent the next startup failure
After recovery, keep a short runbook with the working executable path, map, ports, service user, working directory, server build, and enabled mod IDs. Back up saves and configuration before updates. Update the server and mods in a controlled window, launch once without mods after a major update, and add mods back in documented groups. Monitor free disk space and memory, keep the operating system and drivers current, and test an external connection after changing firewall or router rules.
The decisive rule is simple: first prove what stage fails, then change only the component associated with that stage. Preserve the final log line, establish a no-mod baseline, correct the service context, validate files, check host prerequisites, and troubleshoot discovery only after the process is demonstrably running.
