Don’t update the baseline just to clear a mismatch. First verify that Eyes compared the intended test and browser environment, then inspect the visual differences. Accept and save changes that are part of the redesign; reject unexpected changes and investigate the application before changing the reference image.
What an Eyes baseline mismatch means
Applitools Eyes compares a new UI checkpoint with a stored baseline image. A mismatch is a review signal that the checkpoint differs from that reference; it does not, by itself, identify the cause or prove that the application is broken. Applitools describes visual testing as regression testing that checks screens for unexpected changes (Overview of Visual UI Testing).

After a redesign, some differences are expected. The task is to determine whether each difference reflects an intentional design change, an unexpected regression, or a run that is not using the baseline you meant to compare.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInspect the result before changing the baseline
- Open the failed test in the Applitools Dashboard and inspect the checkpoint alongside its baseline and visual-difference view. Identify the changed regions rather than relying only on the mismatch status.
- Check whether the changed content and layout correspond to the redesign. Look for unexpected missing elements, shifted components, changed text, or other differences unrelated to the intended work.
- Do not accept or reject until you have checked the run identity and decided whether the observed change is expected.
The Dashboard supports reviewing changes and saving a baseline decision (Eyes Dashboard).

Verify the run is using the intended baseline
Baseline identity is associated with the application name and test name, as well as environment parameters including operating system, browser, and viewport size. Confirm those values for the current run match the baseline you expect. A changed name or environment can lead you to a different baseline than the one you intended to review; treat this as a configuration check, not proof that the screenshots are wrong (Baseline parameters).
- Application name: Check the configured Eyes application name.
- Test name: Confirm the run uses the expected test identifier.
- Operating system and browser: Verify the actual run environment is the intended one.
- Viewport: Check the viewport dimensions used for the checkpoint.
If one of these values intentionally changed, decide whether the new environment should have its own baseline or whether the run configuration should be restored. Avoid approving a visual change until you know which comparison you are reviewing.

Check the match level without weakening the test blindly
Match level determines what kinds of visual differences Eyes flags. Strict is documented as the default; it detects visible changes to text, font, color, graphics, and element position while aiming to ignore rendering differences caused by platform-dependent software and hardware (Match levels).

Accept expected redesign changes or reject unexpected ones
When the mismatch is intentional
After confirming the run identity and reviewing the changed regions, accept the change and save the baseline update. The accepted checkpoint becomes the reference for future comparisons (Accepting and rejecting baselines).
When the mismatch is unexpected
Reject the change to retain the existing baseline, then investigate and fix the application or test setup. Do not accept a regression simply to make the run pass: that would replace the reference with the unexpected result.

Where to review
Use the Eyes Dashboard review flow to make and save the baseline decision. For Playwright, Applitools also documents an enhanced HTML report for resolving changes; accepting or rejecting from that report requires authentication (Playwright SDK overview).

Troubleshoot if the mismatch is still unclear
- The screenshot looks like a different test or environment: Recheck application name, test name, OS, browser, and viewport against the intended baseline.
- The differences match the redesign: Review the changed regions, then accept and save the updated baseline.
- The differences do not match the redesign: Reject the change, preserve the baseline, and investigate the application or test configuration.
- The test flags changes you do not intend to detect: Review the configured match level and determine whether it is suitable for that test; do not loosen it indiscriminately.
- You cannot make a decision in the Playwright HTML report: Authenticate before using its accept/reject controls.
The title alone cannot establish why a particular checkpoint differs. The specific cause depends on the baseline and checkpoint images, run configuration, and test result.
