How to Fix an Antenna Channel That’s Missing, Including CBS

Restore a missing over-the-air channel by checking the TV input, rescanning, inspecting the coax connection, adjusting antenna placement, and checking local station notices.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a channel such as CBS is missing from your over-the-air lineup, confirm the TV is set to its antenna or Live TV input, then rescan for channels. If it still does not appear, check the coax connection and cable, reposition the antenna, and scan again after each move. A rescan can update a stale channel list, but it cannot create a signal that does not reach your home.

First confirm you’re watching over the air

These steps apply to an antenna connected to the TV, not cable or satellite service. Make sure the TV is on its Antenna, Live TV, or TV input and that the antenna’s coax cable is connected to the TV’s antenna input. Input and menu names vary by television; consult its manual if you cannot find the tuner settings.

Rescan the TV’s channel list

A channel scan, rescan, auto-tune, or auto-program searches for available broadcasts and refreshes the TV’s stored lineup. It can be useful after a station changes its transmission or frequency, or when the saved channel list is out of date. PBS notes that its rescan guidance is for antenna viewers; cable and satellite subscribers generally do not need to rescan for a station frequency change.

  1. Open the TV’s settings or setup menu and find the channel, tuner, or broadcast option.
  2. Choose the scan command, often labeled Scan, Rescan, Auto-tune, or Auto-program.
  3. Let the scan finish, then check whether the missing station appears.

For general rescan guidance, see PBS Help’s antenna rescan instructions. For Roku TV, the steps and labels may be specific to that interface; see Roku Support’s antenna setup guide.

Check the cable and antenna placement

Inspect the coax connection

Make sure the cable is firmly attached at the antenna and TV. Look for a damaged cable, loose connector, or bent connection point. If you suspect damage, testing with a known-good cable can help identify the problem before replacing the antenna.

Move the antenna and scan again

Try a higher position or a spot near a window, and keep the antenna away from objects that may block reception. If you know the direction of nearby broadcast towers, try aiming the antenna that way. Scan again after each move so you can compare the results; where the TV provides a signal indicator, use it to compare positions. Roku Support notes that channel reception depends on location and antenna positioning, while a Best Buy-hosted antenna quick-start guide also recommends experimenting with height, window placement, aim, and rescanning after moves.

If the antenna has an amplifier

Check that the amplifier is receiving power. If you live close to broadcast towers, test reception with the amplifier disconnected: a strong signal can overload a TV tuner, so amplification is not automatically an improvement. Compare the results with and without it rather than assuming it will restore a missing station. Roku Support covers amplifier power and troubleshooting in its antenna setup guide.

Check for a local station change or reception issue

Whether a particular CBS affiliate is available depends on your address, terrain, distance from transmitters, antenna placement, home construction, and equipment. A station may also have a market-specific transmission change or outage. Check the broadcaster’s current notices and a location-based reception resource, such as the FCC reception map referenced in CBS 58’s antenna rescan guidance. Without your location and the station’s current notice, there is no basis to say whether a specific CBS affiliate is on air or has changed channels.

An antenna’s advertised range does not establish that it will receive a particular station at your address. If you are considering equipment after the free checks, first assess the predicted local signal, broadcast band, practical indoor or outdoor placement, antenna compatibility, and cable condition. A replacement coax cable is relevant when the existing one is damaged; a different antenna may make sense if yours is damaged or unsuitable for your placement. Neither purchase can overcome an unavailable local signal or guarantee CBS reception.

When a deeper reset may be worth trying

CBS 58 describes a reset sequence for some televisions: disconnect the antenna, run a scan with no antenna attached, unplug the TV for about 30 seconds, reconnect the antenna, and scan again. Treat this as model-dependent fallback guidance, not a universal first step. Check your TV manual before trying it. The general rescan and troubleshooting steps are documented in CBS 58’s instructions.

If the channel is still missing

If the input, scan, cable, antenna position, and amplifier checks do not restore the station, the remaining possibilities include a damaged cable, an antenna that is not suitable for the location or placement, a tuner issue, or a local signal limitation. The checks above cannot identify which one applies without more information about your setup and area. Roku Support’s practical summary is: “The number of channels you receive depends on your location and the antenna’s positioning.” See its antenna setup and troubleshooting article.
