If your watch shows the wrong elevation, first recalibrate it at a verified local elevation, then check the selected altimeter profile and make sure the pressure sensor port is clean, uncovered and completely dry. Barometric watches measure pressure, not surveyed height, so weather can change the displayed value even when you remain in the same place. A persistent error after correct calibration and drying can indicate a sensor fault that needs manufacturer service.
Why the elevation can be wrong without a broken watch
Most watch altimeters estimate elevation from barometric pressure. Pressure falls as you climb and generally rises as you descend, so the watch converts the measured pressure into a relative elevation. Casio describes this explicitly in its Module 5741 guide: “The altitude readings displayed by the watch are relative values that are calculated based on barometric pressure measured by the watch’s pressure sensor.”

That reading is not a permanent measurement of surveyed ground height. Weather systems alter air pressure at the same location. A pressure change caused by an approaching front can therefore make the watch indicate that you have climbed or descended while you are standing still. A trail sign, building plaque or map elevation may also use a different reference or a more recently surveyed value. A mismatch alone does not prove the sensor is defective.
Calibration sets the watch’s pressure-to-elevation reference at one moment. It cannot stop later weather changes and cannot repair a pressure sensor that is failing. Treat the displayed altitude as an estimate whose usefulness depends on a good reference, a suitable profile and an unobstructed sensor.

Follow this diagnostic order
Work through the checks in order. The sequence separates a normal reference offset from a setting problem, a blocked port and a hardware failure.
- Confirm that the model has a barometric altimeter. Some watches without a pressure sensor calculate elevation from GPS during recorded activities. Their calibration and error behavior are different.
- Move outside and let the watch acclimate. Give it several minutes after moving between markedly different temperatures, buildings or vehicles. Use an open area with a clear view of the sky when a GPS or DEM reference will be used.
- Choose a dependable reference elevation. A verified local marker or trusted elevation value that applies to your exact location is preferable to an unverified sign or a rough map pin.
- Calibrate using a method your model supports. Enter a known elevation manually when possible; otherwise use the watch’s DEM or GPS option according to its manual.
- Check the profile and pressure port. Make sure the watch is using an altimeter profile when you need elevation, and remove clothing or equipment covering the port.
- Dry, clean and retest. Water or debris can disturb pressure readings. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, allow complete air-drying, then repeat the measurement.
- Escalate repeated errors. If a model-specific error remains after several attempts and correct calibration, use the manufacturer or an authorized service channel.
1. Confirm what your watch is actually measuring
Barometric altimeter versus GPS elevation
Check the exact model specification and owner manual for a barometric pressure sensor. Garmin notes that models without one may use GPS elevation during recorded activities. GPS-derived elevation depends on satellite geometry and reception and may fluctuate when the sky view is obstructed. Do not apply a barometric-altimeter calibration procedure to a watch that has no pressure sensor.
Relative altitude is not a survey result
Even a functioning pressure altimeter can disagree with a sign or a topographic map. The watch’s value is calculated from the pressure measured at the watch and the reference entered during calibration. If the weather has changed since calibration, the indicated elevation can drift while the ground elevation has not.

Use a known local elevation first
Among the methods described in Garmin’s guidance, a known elevation entered manually is the strongest practical reference. Suitable references include a surveyed benchmark or a trusted elevation value for the exact place where you are standing. Enter the value only after confirming that the reference uses the same units and location as the watch.
Allow the sensor to settle
Calibrate outdoors when conditions are stable. Garmin recommends allowing a few minutes to acclimate after a significant environmental change. Do not calibrate immediately after taking the watch from a hot car into cold air, from an air-conditioned room into heat, or from a dry room into a humid one. Those transitions can temporarily affect the pressure reading.
Keep the watch in a representative position
Wear it normally or hold it in the same open position in which you will use it. Avoid pressing the case against a table, sleeve or backpack strap. Keep the pressure opening exposed while the watch takes its reference reading.

3. Choose the calibration method your model supports
| Method | Reference quality | Conditions and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Known elevation entered manually | Best practical option when the local value is verified | Requires a trustworthy elevation for the exact location and a watch that accepts manual entry |
| DEM or map-derived elevation | Depends on the digital elevation data for your location | Availability and menu names vary; some Garmin watches require a phone connection for DEM |
| GPS-derived elevation | Depends on satellite reception and geometry | Use an open sky view; reception quality can make the result less stable than a verified local reference |
Not every watch offers all three choices. The options below are examples from specific manuals, not universal instructions.

4. Calibrate using the correct model instructions
Garmin Instinct E
On the Instinct E, the documented path is:
- Hold MENU.
- Select Sensors & Accessories.
- Select Altimeter.
- Choose Calibrate.
- Select Enter Manually and enter the verified local elevation.
The same manual also lists Use DEM and Use GPS. Garmin’s general support guidance says GPS calibration depends on satellite reception, while DEM uses map data and may require a connected phone on some models. The menu path and available choices differ across Garmin watches, so use the manual for your exact model rather than copying this sequence to another device.
Casio Module 5741
Module 5741 treats altitude as a relative pressure-derived value and recommends updating the altitude offset before setting out and during an activity. Its calibration operation uses the module’s crown controls. Because crown actions and display states are module-specific, follow the Module 5741 guide for the exact sequence instead of assuming that another Casio or PRO TREK model uses the same controls.
Suunto Core
Suunto Core’s automatic profile switches between altimeter and barometer behavior according to detected movement. Suunto notes that some activities require a manually selected profile. If the watch is using a barometer profile while you expect an elevation trace, select the appropriate profile using the Core guide. This behavior should not be generalized to every Suunto model.
5. Check the profile and operating settings
Use an altimeter profile for elevation changes
Some watches distinguish between an altimeter profile, which interprets pressure changes as movement in elevation, and a barometer profile, which treats pressure changes as weather information. Automatic switching can be useful but may choose the wrong interpretation for an unusual activity, such as remaining still in a changing weather system or moving through a sheltered area. If your model provides manual profile selection, use the profile recommended for the activity in its manual.

Buttons, crowns, touch controls and menu labels are model-specific. A correct Garmin path is not a universal Garmin path, and neither is a Casio or Suunto procedure. If a menu item is absent, stop and consult the exact owner manual rather than selecting a similarly named setting.

6. Inspect, clean and dry the pressure port
Remove obstructions
Clothing, a protective accessory or a tight strap can cover the pressure opening. Remove anything that sits over the port and take a new reading in open air. Garmin identifies clothing obstruction, environmental transitions, water and debris as factors that can affect elevation readings.
Rinse after water, salt or chemicals
After exposure to listed chemicals, salt water or chlorinated water, Garmin recommends rinsing the watch with fresh water, gently shaking off excess water and allowing it to air-dry completely before calibration. Follow your own manufacturer’s water-care instructions if they differ.
Never probe the opening
Do not insert a pin, brush, compressed-air nozzle or other sharp object into the pressure port. The official materials covered here do not recommend probing it, and doing so can damage the sensor or its protective membrane. Do not open the case to investigate an apparent blockage unless the manufacturer’s service instructions specifically direct a qualified repair.
Retest only when fully dry
A damp watch can continue to produce unstable pressure readings. Let it air-dry fully at room temperature before recalibrating. Avoid using heat to speed the process, since heat can create another temperature and pressure transition.

Compare at one fixed location
After calibration, leave the watch at the reference location and take several readings over a short period. If the value settles near the entered elevation, the original problem was likely an offset, profile choice or temporary environmental effect. For a useful comparison, keep the watch in the same position and avoid moving between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Separate movement from weather
If the watch changes while you are moving, some variation is expected. If it changes while you remain still, compare the timing with weather changes and with the watch’s barometer display if available. A pressure trend can move the indicated altitude even though the terrain has not changed. Recalibrating repeatedly during a storm may hide the weather effect rather than solve it.

Check units and reference location
Confirm that the watch is set to the intended altitude unit and that the entered reference belongs to your current location, not a nearby town, trailhead or different floor of a building. A reliable number entered for the wrong place still produces a wrong result.

Common symptoms and the most likely next action
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Reading differs from a sign or map but changes smoothly with climbing | Different reference datum, weather pressure or an old calibration offset | Calibrate at a verified local elevation and compare again at one fixed point |
| Elevation changes while the watch is stationary | Weather-driven pressure change or the wrong profile | Check the altimeter/barometer profile and interpret the reading as relative |
| Reading became erratic after swimming or washing | Moisture or residue around the pressure port | Rinse as directed, air-dry completely and recalibrate |
| Reading is consistently offset by a similar amount | Reference elevation was not set correctly | Enter a verified local value manually if the model supports it |
| GPS calibration varies from attempt to attempt | Weak or obstructed satellite reception | Repeat outdoors with a clear sky view, or use a known elevation |
| An error code keeps returning | Possible sensor or hardware fault | Follow the model’s service instructions after multiple correct attempts |
When calibration is not enough
Calibration corrects the reference offset; it does not restore a failed pressure sensor. Stop troubleshooting at home if the watch repeatedly shows an error, refuses to complete calibration, or remains implausibly unstable after you have confirmed the profile, removed obstructions and dried the case.
Casio’s Module 5601 troubleshooting guide gives a clear escalation point: “If [ERR] keeps appearing after multiple measurement attempts, contact a CASIO service center or your original retailer.” That instruction applies to Module 5601; other models can use different codes and service procedures. Record the model and module number, the error text, whether the watch was recently exposed to water or chemicals, and the calibration methods you tried. Give those details to the manufacturer or authorized service provider.
Do not assume that replacing the battery, resetting the watch or repeatedly entering a guessed elevation will fix a pressure-sensor fault. A reset can erase settings without repairing hardware, and a guessed reference can make later diagnosis harder.
Preventing the same problem on future trips
- Calibrate at a verified elevation before starting an activity and update the reference when the manufacturer recommends doing so during the activity.
- Keep the pressure port uncovered by sleeves, straps, cases and packs.
- After salt water, chlorine or listed chemicals, rinse with fresh water and let the watch air-dry completely.
- Allow the watch to acclimate after a major temperature or environment change before taking a reference reading.
- Use a manual altimeter profile when your model’s automatic switching does not match the activity.
- Use GPS or DEM calibration only with the conditions and connections specified by your model’s manual.
- Keep the owner manual or the manufacturer’s support page available for the exact button sequence and error-code meaning.
What a correctly working altimeter should—and should not—promise
A correctly working pressure altimeter should provide a useful relative elevation trend after calibration. It should not be expected to match every sign, map or surveyed value indefinitely, because atmospheric pressure changes. The manuals cited for this guide do not establish one universal accuracy figure for all altimeter watches, so a single percentage or fixed error limit would be misleading. Judge the watch by repeatability at a fixed location, sensible changes during known climbs and the absence of persistent sensor errors.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- No barometric sensor: use the model’s GPS-elevation guidance instead.
- One-time offset: enter a verified local elevation and retest.
- Stationary drift: check weather effects and profile selection before declaring a fault.
- After water or chemicals: rinse as directed, dry completely, then calibrate.
- Blocked port: remove external obstruction; never poke inside the opening.
- Persistent error code or failed calibration: contact the correct manufacturer service channel.
