Ask it to restate or summarize the relevant passage, compare that with your material, then narrow the input and request a more checkable explanation. These steps can make the problem easier to diagnose, but they cannot guarantee a correct answer. The examples below use ChatGPT Study mode; other apps have different controls, upload limits, and privacy policies.
1. Check whether the app actually read the relevant source
Before asking the app to solve a problem from a file or image, ask it to summarize the relevant passage, identify a key detail, or restate the question. Compare its response with the original. If it leaves out or distorts important information, treat that as an input problem first—not proof that the app reasoned from the complete source.

Try a clearer image or PDF, or paste the relevant text directly. Name the page, section, or question you want it to use. OpenAI recommends these steps for ChatGPT Study mode when it is not using an uploaded file correctly or misses something in an image or file: Using study mode in ChatGPT.

An upload being accepted by the interface does not establish that every page or detail was processed. What the app can handle depends on the chat, file, and workflow available to your account.

2. Narrow the context to one target
Long or mixed documents make it harder to tell which material should support an answer. Point the app to one specific item and include the excerpt if needed. For example:
- “Use page 4, paragraph 2. Summarize the author’s definition of opportunity cost.”
- “Answer question 6 using the definition in my notes. If the notes do not contain enough information, say so.”
- “Here is the relevant passage: [paste excerpt]. Explain how it supports the answer.”
Then check whether the response reflects that passage rather than unrelated material or an assumption. Asking the app to identify the sentence it relied on can make a mismatch easier to spot; it does not prove the conclusion is correct.

3. Ask for the kind of learning help you need
A prompt can be more useful when it says what you are studying, your level, the exact topic, your goal, and what you already understand. Include a relevant exam format or deadline if it affects the help you need. For instance: “I’m studying introductory biology. I understand dominant and recessive alleles but not this cross. Give me one hint at a time, then check my reasoning.”

- “Ask me one question at a time rather than giving the solution.”
- “Give me a hint first. Don’t reveal the answer until I try.”
- “Show the steps and identify the sentence in my notes that supports each relevant claim.”
- “Quiz me on this section, then explain any mistakes in my answers.”
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Study mode as a feature intended to guide thinking, but says it can sometimes give a direct answer. These requests can steer the interaction; they do not ensure the app will follow the instructions or be right. See OpenAI’s Study mode guidance.
4. Separate a missing feature from a bad answer
If the study feature itself is missing, check the current conversation type and account or workspace settings before troubleshooting a response. In ChatGPT, Study is unavailable in Temporary Chats, GPTs, and Projects; some eligible Edu workspaces may enable it automatically. Availability and controls can change, so consult the app’s current help information for your account.

ChatGPT-specific checks if Study is missing
OpenAI suggests updating and restarting the app, then signing out and back in. On the web, try a hard refresh, clear site data, or open a private window with extensions disabled. A VPN, proxy, blocker, or managed network may also interfere. If it still does not appear, provide support with your device, app version, browser, where you expected to find Study, and a screenshot. These steps are specific to ChatGPT, not universal fixes for other study apps. The current instructions are in Using study mode in ChatGPT.

5. Verify important answers against course material
Compare important claims with the assigned reading, your instructor’s explanation, or another suitable trusted source. If a misunderstanding persists or matters to your learning, ask a teacher or tutor. OpenAI warns that Study mode can make mistakes and says it does not replace teachers, tutors, course materials, or academic requirements. Follow your school’s and instructor’s rules for AI use; see OpenAI’s Study mode guidance.

Clearer sources, focused prompts, and repeated checks can help expose gaps, but they do not eliminate hallucinations. If you are considering another app after trying these steps, compare whether it identifies the passage behind an answer, makes unsupported claims easy to notice, offers hints and explanations rather than answers alone, supports the files and access you need, and fits your school’s privacy and AI-use rules. These are evaluation criteria, not a ranking of particular apps.
6. Check privacy before uploading course material
Review the privacy settings and school policy for the specific app and account you use before uploading sensitive material. For individual ChatGPT services, OpenAI says content may be used to improve models unless you opt out for new conversations. It separately states that Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not use or create memories, and are not used for training. These details apply to the described ChatGPT services; do not assume they apply to other apps or institutional accounts. Read OpenAI’s data-use policy and check the controls available in your own account.
