If you can’t receive an Amazon two-step verification (2SV) code, first try a registered backup method or a trusted device. If none works, select Didn’t Receive the Code at the sign-in prompt, then choose Two-Step Verification Account Recovery and complete Amazon’s identity verification. After you regain access, update your sign-in methods in Your Account → Login & security.
Try these fixes in order
- Use a method already connected to your account. At the 2SV prompt, look for an option to try another method. Choose a registered backup phone, an enrolled authenticator app, a passkey, or a trusted device if Amazon offers it. Amazon recommends trying a backup method or trusted device before starting account recovery. Amazon’s account recovery instructions note that the options available depend on the sign-in flow.
- Check phone delivery. Confirm that the number shown at sign-in is one you can still access. Check cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, and ask your carrier whether it blocks short-code or verification messages. These are among the checks in Amazon’s OTP troubleshooting guidance.
- Request a new code through another offered route. Choose Didn’t Receive the Code and try another registered number or delivery method if one appears. Amazon’s general sign-in help describes resend by SMS and WhatsApp delivery linked to the registered phone number, but WhatsApp is not guaranteed to appear for every 2SV challenge or account. Amazon’s sign-in help explains the available routes.
- Use the newest code promptly. If several codes arrive, enter the latest one. Amazon’s OTP guidance says to enter a received code within 10 minutes. If an authenticator code is rejected, wait for it to expire and try the next code.
- Try an authenticator only if it was enrolled before you were locked out. An authenticator generates codes on the device, so it does not require cellular signal. Amazon names Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as examples, but does not require either. Installing an app after losing access will not connect it to your Amazon account; enrollment normally requires access to Login & security and completion of Amazon’s setup steps. Amazon’s OTP guidance covers authenticator codes.
When to use account recovery
If none of the sign-in methods available to you works, use Amazon’s recovery flow:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Enter the email address or phone number associated with your Amazon account and begin signing in.
- At the 2SV prompt, choose Didn’t Receive the Code.
- Select Two-Step Verification Account Recovery and follow the on-screen instructions to verify your identity.
Amazon says it cannot change 2SV settings until your identity has been verified. The current customer recovery page does not state a standard review time or a universal list of documents to submit, so follow the instructions shown for your account. See Recover Your Account after Two-Step Verification Fails.

| Route | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Another registered method or trusted device | You can use a backup number, an enrolled authenticator, a passkey, or a trusted device offered during sign-in. | Lets you continue the sign-in flow, but only a method already available to the account can help immediately. |
| Two-Step Verification Account Recovery | You cannot complete the prompt with any available method. | Requires Amazon’s identity-verification process. The customer recovery page does not specify a review time or exact evidence requirements for every account. |
The choices can vary by account and sign-in flow. Amazon’s recovery page recommends trying a registered backup method or trusted device before account recovery.

Update your 2SV setup after you get back in
- Open Your Account → Login & security.
- Review the phone numbers and other sign-in methods attached to 2SV; remove or replace any method you can no longer use.
- Add a backup method while signed in, then make sure you can access it. A backup reduces the chance that losing one phone or delivery route will block your next sign-in.
Amazon’s overview explains that 2SV adds a code to your password-based sign-in and identifies text message and authenticator app as code options. The exact methods shown can vary. What is Two-Step Verification?
