If one AirPod has no sound, cuts out, or is quieter than the other, first check that both earbuds are charging. Then test the affected AirPod by itself, inspect it for debris if it is quiet, and check the audio balance setting. Reset only after those checks, using the steps for your AirPods generation.
1. Check that both AirPods are charging
- Make sure the charging case has power, then put both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
- Open the lid near your paired iPhone or iPad and check whether both AirPods appear to be charging.
- If one AirPod does not register a charge, follow Apple’s charging and cleaning guidance for your model. Do not use liquids or insert sharp objects into the case or charging contacts.
A side that is not charged can seem broken even when the audio hardware is fine.

2. Test the silent AirPod by itself
- Place the AirPod that is not working in its correct ear and leave the other AirPod in the case.
- Close the case and play audio. Apple recommends this isolated test to check whether the affected AirPod works on its own.
- If it works alone, put both AirPods back in the case for 30 seconds, then try them together again.
If sound fails only when both are in use, note that difference; it can help narrow down the issue before you reset or seek service.

Inspect the speaker mesh
Debris on the speaker mesh can make one side sound quieter. For AirPods Pro, remove the ear tip to inspect the mesh. Clean the AirPods only as described in Apple’s instructions for your exact model.

Center the balance control
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual.
- Find Balance and move the slider to the center.
Menu labels may differ slightly depending on your software version. Apple’s current guidance uses the path above.
4. Reset using the procedure for your AirPods generation
Apple’s reset steps are not the same for every model. Its instructions start with a 30-second wait and forgetting the AirPods in Bluetooth settings if they appear there, but the reset action depends on the generation: older models use the case setup button, while AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 use taps on the front of the case. Identify your model and follow the matching directions in Apple’s AirPods reset guide rather than trying a generic button sequence.

5. If one side still does not work, arrange an inspection
If the charging check, isolated test, cleaning or balance check, and model-specific reset do not resolve the problem, use Apple’s AirPods service and repair page. Apple can inspect AirPods and arrange service in person or by mail. Cost and available service depend on the device, inspection, location, and parts availability; the page’s estimates require selecting a device and are not a universal price.

6. Consider a compatible replacement AirPod
Apple says a replacement AirPod can be purchased. Before buying a single earbud, identify your AirPods generation and confirm compatibility through Apple’s AirPods support page or with Apple Support. Do not assume an earbud from another generation will work with your set.
