If AirPods won’t connect, start by checking that both earbuds charge, Bluetooth is on, and the AirPods are selected as the audio output. If those basics do not help, pair them again; reset them only using the procedure for your exact model. These steps address common connection and pairing failures, but repeated disconnections can have more than one cause.
Start with the checks that can block any connection
Apple’s connection checklist covers AirPods and AirPods Pro connecting to iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Work through these checks before resetting anything.

- Update the device you’re connecting to. Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS on iPhone or iPad, or macOS on Mac.
- Check that both AirPods are charging. Put both earbuds in the case and confirm they charge. If one is not charging, it may lose power and appear to have a connection problem; address the charging issue before treating it as a Bluetooth fault.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on. Check Bluetooth in Settings on iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on Mac.
- Select AirPods as the audio output. On iPhone or iPad, open Control Center and choose the AirPods from the audio output or AirPlay controls. On Mac, select them from the sound output controls. Turn up the device volume and test playback. If AirPods are missing from the list or appear but won’t connect, continue to pairing.

Pair AirPods again
Pairing controls vary by AirPods generation and case. First identify whether your case has a rear setup button or uses front-of-case taps; AirPods Max use headphone controls. Avoid holding a button that your case does not have.

- Put both AirPods in the charging case, close the lid, and wait 15 seconds.
- Open the lid and put the case into pairing mode using the control for your model. For setup-button cases, press and hold the rear setup button until the status light flashes white. Newer front-tap cases use a different sequence; follow Apple’s instructions for the specific model.
- On iPhone or iPad, follow the on-screen setup prompt. On Mac, open Bluetooth settings and select AirPods when they appear.
Apple’s pairing instructions for different devices and models are in Connect your AirPods or AirPods Pro. Menu names can differ with the operating-system version.
Reset only if pairing still fails
A reset is not the same as simply turning Bluetooth off and on, or forgetting AirPods in Bluetooth settings. If you choose Forget This Device, AirPods are removed from devices signed in to the same Apple Account and must be paired again. A reset procedure depends on the AirPods family and case.

- AirPods or AirPods Pro with a rear setup button: Put both earbuds in the case and close it for 30 seconds. Open the lid. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, tap your AirPods, and choose Forget This Device if they are listed. With the lid open, press and hold the rear setup button for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white. Pair them again.
- AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3: These models use front-of-case taps rather than the older rear-button reset procedure. Follow Apple’s current model-specific reset instructions; do not apply the rear-button steps to a case without that button.
- AirPods Max: Use the Digital Crown and listening-mode button as directed in Apple’s reset instructions, and release when the status light changes from amber to white.
Use Apple’s reset instructions for AirPods to confirm the exact gesture for your model. The control layout and sequence matter; a universal “hold the case button” instruction does not apply to every generation.

The checks above can restore a connection, but Apple’s connection checklist does not identify one universal cause for repeated dropouts. Work through the basics again, paying particular attention to whether both earbuds are charging and whether AirPods remain selected as the audio output. If the problem persists after re-pairing or the correct reset, proceed to firmware and service checks rather than repeatedly resetting the device.

Check firmware conditions, then seek service if needed
AirPods firmware updates are delivered automatically when the required conditions are met; Apple does not provide a manual install button in the procedure below. To give an update a chance to install, connect AirPods to an up-to-date iPhone, iPad, or Mac; make sure that device is connected to Wi-Fi; put AirPods in their charging case and connect the case to power; then keep the AirPods within Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes. If AirPods still won’t connect or keep disconnecting, or if the earbuds or case appear not to charge, check coverage and service options through Apple’s AirPods service and repair page. A replacement case is relevant when the existing case is missing, defective, or not charging the earbuds—not as a general fix for Bluetooth trouble. Confirm the exact AirPods generation and case model before arranging a replacement.
