Before troubleshooting, identify your AirPods and case
Connection and reset steps differ by generation, and the charging connector belongs to the case—not just the AirPods family. Check your model and whether the case has a Lightning or USB-C port before following case-control directions or choosing a cable. Apple’s connection instructions and reset instructions distinguish newer models from older ones. AirPods Max have separate connection and reset guidance; the earbud-case procedures below do not apply to them.

If AirPods won’t connect
Check Bluetooth, charge, and audio output
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you are using, and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods in the case and check that both are charging.
- When testing audio, select AirPods as the device’s output and turn up the device volume.
These checks come before pairing again in Apple’s connection troubleshooting steps.
Pair again with the right case control
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 15 seconds.
- Open the lid. For AirPods 4/5 and AirPods Pro 3, double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. For other supported models covered by Apple’s instructions, hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes white.
- Keep the open case near your iPhone or iPad and follow the on-screen prompts. On a Mac, you may need to pair the AirPods manually.
Use the current model-specific directions in Apple’s pairing guide if the case control or prompts differ.

If AirPods or the case won’t charge
Check the connection and charge status
- Use a cable that matches the charging case’s port: Lightning or USB-C. Connect the case, adapter, and a working power source firmly.
- Leave AirPods or AirPods Pro in the closed case to charge for at least 15 minutes, as Apple advises.
- Check charge status on an Apple device or at the case.
For a Qi-compatible wireless case, reposition it on the charger if the status light does not appear. If repositioning does not help, try a compatible wired connection. Apple’s charging troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
If one AirPod is silent or audio sounds wrong
First check that both earbuds are seated and charging, then confirm the device is sending audio to the AirPods and its volume is up. If one AirPod still does not play, use Apple’s one-AirPod audio troubleshooting. For sound issues that may call for cleaning, follow the instructions for your exact AirPods model in Apple’s cleaning guide. Do not improvise with liquids, sharp objects, or tools.

Restart or reset only after basic checks
Restart
For AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple describes a restart as putting them in the case, closing the lid, and waiting at least 10 seconds. This is a simpler next step than resetting them.
Reset
Reset instructions vary by generation. Apple’s listed older models use the setup button on the case; AirPods 4/5 and AirPods Pro 3 use double taps on the front. Follow the full model-specific procedure in Apple’s reset guide, including its required status-light sequence. After resetting, bring the open case near your device to reconnect. A reset can clear custom settings, so you may need to restore them.

If the problem persists: firmware and service
Allow a firmware update to install
Apple says AirPods firmware updates install automatically when the AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac. To follow its update instructions, leave the closed case in that setup for at least 30 minutes, then check the firmware version. See Apple’s firmware update steps.
Check coverage and request service
If the connection, charging, or sound problem remains, check coverage and request a service estimate through Apple’s repair and service page. Apple lists in-person and mail-in service options; final charges and available options depend on inspection, coverage, and location.
