If your AirPods say they’re connected but you hear nothing, first select them as your Mac’s sound output: open Control Center > Sound and choose your AirPods. A Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee that macOS is routing audio to them. If that does not work, check the app’s volume, reconnect or pair the AirPods, and then follow the branch that matches the symptom.
1. Select AirPods as the Mac’s sound output
This is the first thing to check when audio is coming from the Mac’s speakers—or nowhere—even though AirPods appear connected.

- Click Control Center in the menu bar.
- Choose Sound, then select your AirPods as the output device.
- Play audio again.
You can also open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and select AirPods there. Apple recommends choosing AirPods in Control Center when sound continues through the Mac speakers. See Apple’s Mac setup instructions and the Mac User Guide for connecting a Bluetooth device.

An app can be muted or turned down independently of the Mac’s output setting. Check the player’s volume and mute state, including the controls for a browser tab or media app, then try a different app or audio file.

- If another app plays through AirPods, the issue is likely in the original app’s playback settings.
- If neither app plays, check System Settings > Sound and confirm AirPods remain selected as the output and the output is not muted.
3. If AirPods are missing or will not connect, pair them manually
If AirPods do not appear in the sound destination list, or they will not reconnect, check that Bluetooth is on and both AirPods are charged. Put both AirPods in their case, confirm they are charging, then wear them and check the destination list in Control Center. If they are still unavailable, pair them from Bluetooth settings.
- On your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
- Enter pairing mode using the control for your case: Apple’s US instructions say to double-tap the front of the case until its light flashes white for AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods 5. For other models, press and hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes white.
- In Nearby Devices, choose Connect beside your AirPods.
Pairing controls differ by generation, and model instructions or supported macOS versions can change. Check Apple’s current setup page for your exact model.

4. Reconnect before trying a reset
If manual pairing does not restore the connection, Apple’s reconnection steps are to update macOS, confirm both AirPods are charging and Bluetooth is on, and check the selected audio destination. Then try a fresh connection:

- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 15 seconds.
- Open the lid and pair the AirPods manually using the model-specific steps above.
- If they still will not connect, reset them using Apple’s instructions for that exact model.
Reset controls vary among AirPods generations, so do not assume one button sequence applies to every case. Follow Apple’s AirPods reconnection and reset instructions.

5. Check whether another Apple device is taking the AirPods
Compatible AirPods can switch automatically between Apple devices. If they move to an iPhone or another device while you are trying to listen on the Mac, select them again in Control Center > Bluetooth.
To limit automatic switching, open System Settings > Bluetooth, choose the options for your AirPods, open Connect to This Mac, and select When Last Connected to This Mac. See Apple’s instructions for switching AirPods between devices.

6. If sound is muffled or quiet only during calls
Reduced or muffled audio during a meeting or chat is different from no sound caused by incorrect output routing. When an app uses the AirPods microphone, Bluetooth audio switches to a speaking-and-listening mode that can lower audio quality and volume.

7. Troubleshoot the Mac’s speakers only if they also fail
If the Mac’s internal speakers do not work when selected either, this is a separate Mac audio problem—not evidence by itself that the AirPods need replacing. Check the app’s volume, disconnect external audio devices and displays, select the built-in speakers in Sound settings, and make sure output volume is raised and mute is off. If the internal speakers still do not work, Apple says service may be needed; see Apple’s internal-speaker troubleshooting steps.

Apple’s US setup page, published September 14, 2026, lists these minimum macOS requirements. Verify the live Apple page for the current requirements for your generation.
