How to Fix Airplane Mode Problems in Windows 10

Airplane mode stuck on Windows 10? Follow the official control, reconnection, router restart, networking reset and adapter-driver steps, plus guidance for the documented stuck-radio condition.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Airplane mode will not turn off in Windows 10, start with the taskbar network controls or Start > Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode. If Wi‑Fi is still unavailable after the switch is off, work through the recovery sequence below: reconnect to the network, restart your modem and router, reset Windows networking, and only then reinstall the network-adapter driver. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so persistent problems are also a reason to plan an upgrade rather than spend indefinitely on an unsupported installation.

What Airplane mode does in Windows 10

Microsoft describes Airplane mode as “a quick way to turn off all wireless communications on your PC.” In practice, it disables radios used for Wi‑Fi, cellular connections, Bluetooth and NFC. Windows can remember the Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth choices you had before Airplane mode was enabled, so those radios may not automatically return to exactly the same state when you switch Airplane mode off.

Airplane mode is a communications setting, not a repair utility. Turning it off should make the wireless controls available again, but a saved-network problem, a router that needs restarting, a damaged Windows networking stack or a network-adapter driver issue can still prevent an Internet connection.

Choose the least disruptive fix first

Symptom First remedy Access required Reversibility and escalation
Airplane mode is on or the toggle is easy to reach Turn it off from the taskbar or Settings None beyond the affected PC Fully reversible; lowest escalation
Airplane mode is off, but a known Wi‑Fi network is not connected Enable Wi‑Fi, select the network and reconnect; forget and re-add the profile if necessary The affected PC and the network password Reversible connection change
Wi‑Fi is listed but cannot obtain a connection Restart the modem and router, then reset Windows networking with Microsoft’s commands Local network equipment; administrator access for commands Networking reset changes the stack but does not remove the adapter
Wi‑Fi is missing, the adapter shows an error, or resets do not help Prepare a manufacturer driver, uninstall the adapter in Device Manager and restart Administrator access; another computer and a USB flash drive if the affected PC is offline Most invasive step; have a backup driver before uninstalling
Airplane mode visibly says Off while Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth remains disabled Use Microsoft’s dedicated guidance for wireless devices disabled after Airplane mode is off The affected PC; Internet access is useful for documentation Specific documented stuck-radio condition

Step 1: Turn Airplane mode off with Windows’ normal controls

Use the taskbar

  1. Select the network, volume or battery icon on the taskbar.
  2. Select Airplane mode so the control changes to Off.
  3. If the Wi‑Fi control is visible, select it and verify that Wi‑Fi itself is enabled.

The taskbar control is the quickest test because it immediately shows whether Windows accepts the change. If the button is missing, unavailable or does not change state, use Settings instead.

  • 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance

Use Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Network & internet, then Airplane mode.
  3. Switch Airplane mode off.
  4. Return to the Wi‑Fi page and make sure the Wi‑Fi switch is on.

After either method, wait briefly for nearby networks to populate. Do not assume the computer is online merely because Airplane mode reads Off; check for an actual network connection.

Step 2: Check whether Wi‑Fi recovered

Reconnect to a listed network

If your usual network appears, select it and choose Connect. Enter the network password when Windows asks. A network can remain saved while its connection is inactive, so selecting the saved name again is a useful test.

Forget and add the network again

If the network is listed but repeated connection attempts fail, remove the saved profile and reconnect:

  • Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
  1. Open the Wi‑Fi controls from the taskbar or Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi.
  2. Open the list of known or saved networks.
  3. Select the affected network and choose Forget.
  4. Return to the available-network list, select the same network and choose Connect.
  5. Enter its password again.

Forgetting removes the stored connection profile; it does not change the router’s wireless settings. If the network does not appear at all, continue to the equipment and adapter checks rather than repeatedly entering a password.

Step 3: Restart the modem and router

A wireless radio can be working while the network equipment is not accepting connections. Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence calls for a full power restart:

  1. Unplug the modem and router from electrical power. If you have one combined unit, unplug that unit.
  2. Wait about 30 seconds.
  3. Restore power.
  4. Wait for the equipment to finish starting before trying to connect from Windows again.
  5. Turn Wi‑Fi on in Windows, select the network and test the connection.

This step restarts the network path outside the PC. It does not erase your Wi‑Fi password or alter Airplane mode settings.

Step 4: Reset the Windows networking stack

Use this escalation when Airplane mode is off and the network is present or intermittently visible, but Windows still cannot establish a connection. You need an elevated Command Prompt, which means opening Command Prompt with administrator permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu and search for Command Prompt.
  2. Choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
  3. Enter each command below separately, pressing Enter after each one and keeping the listed order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
  1. Read each result for an error message. A command may request a restart; if so, restart Windows before testing Wi‑Fi.
  2. Otherwise, restart the PC after the sequence, then enable Wi‑Fi and reconnect to your network.

The commands reset Winsock, reset Internet Protocol configuration, release and renew the current IP lease, and clear the DNS resolver cache. They are a networking-stack reset, not a driver replacement. If the adapter is absent from Windows or reports a device error, proceed to the driver step.

Step 5: Reinstall the network-adapter driver

Get a recovery driver before uninstalling

Driver removal is more disruptive than changing a toggle or resetting the stack. Before you uninstall anything, obtain the network-adapter driver intended for your exact PC model from the computer manufacturer. Save the installer locally if the affected PC can download it. If the PC has no Internet access, use another computer to download the manufacturer’s driver and copy it to a USB flash drive for transfer.

  • 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐔𝐬𝐞 – 1. Easy Installation - Installs quickly with our preloaded internal driver for seamless connectivity. 2. Adjust and Pack with Ease - Optimizes signal with adjustable antennas and folds compactly for easy storage.

Keep the USB drive connected or place the installer somewhere easy to find on the affected PC. This preparation matters because Windows may need the manufacturer package if it does not immediately restore a usable driver after restarting.

Uninstall the adapter in Device Manager

  1. Open Start, search for Device Manager and open it.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Select the affected wireless adapter.
  4. Choose Uninstall device and confirm the removal.
  5. Restart the PC.

Microsoft says Windows will look for and install the network-adapter driver after the restart. Once Windows loads, check Device Manager and the taskbar Wi‑Fi control. If the adapter returns, try connecting to the network. If it does not return or still shows an error, run the manufacturer’s driver installer you prepared earlier and restart again if the installer requests it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the adapter is not obvious

Several entries can appear under Network adapters, including wired, wireless and virtual devices. Do not remove unrelated entries at random. Use the adapter name and the device status shown by Device Manager to identify the wireless device affected by the Airplane mode problem. If there is no wireless adapter entry at all, the missing device itself is a stronger reason to install the manufacturer package rather than repeating the taskbar toggle.

Step 6: Handle the documented stuck-radio condition

Microsoft documents a Windows Client condition in which wireless devices remain disabled even though Airplane mode is visibly off. This can affect Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth and is different from simply failing to authenticate to one saved network.

If the switch says Off but the radios remain disabled after the previous checks, use Microsoft’s Windows Client article titled Wireless devices disabled after Airplane mode is off. Follow that article’s guidance for this specific state instead of treating it as an ordinary password or router failure. The dedicated procedure is the appropriate escalation when the Windows controls and normal networking reset do not re-enable the radios.

What to do when the affected PC is offline

An offline computer can still be repaired, but driver recovery requires planning:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On another computer with Internet access, open the affected PC manufacturer’s support page.
  2. Locate the exact model and select the Windows 10 network or wireless adapter driver.
  3. Download the driver installer and copy it to a USB flash drive.
  4. Safely remove the drive, connect it to the affected PC and copy the installer to a local folder.
  5. Run the installer, restart Windows if requested, and check whether Wi‑Fi returns.

The USB drive is only a transport method; it does not repair Airplane mode by itself. Use the manufacturer’s package that matches the computer, rather than an unrelated adapter’s driver.

Windows 10’s support status changes the decision

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That end date includes free software updates, technical assistance and security fixes. The troubleshooting steps above can restore wireless access on an existing installation, but they do not restore support. If Airplane mode problems keep returning, the adapter is unreliable, or the computer is otherwise compatible with a supported Windows release, include an upgrade or replacement plan in the decision rather than relying on permanent fixes for an unsupported operating system.

When each remedy is appropriate

Use the toggle or Settings when

  • Airplane mode is simply enabled.
  • The control responds normally and Wi‑Fi appears after switching it off.
  • You want the safest, fully reversible first test.

Reconnect or forget the network when

  • Wi‑Fi is enabled and the network name is visible.
  • Only one saved network refuses to connect.
  • You can provide the network password again.

Restart equipment or reset networking when

  • The network appears but Windows cannot complete a connection.
  • Other devices also need a fresh router or modem connection.
  • The PC has administrator access for the command sequence.

Reinstall the driver when

  • The wireless adapter is missing, reports an error or remains unusable after the stack reset.
  • You have a suitable manufacturer driver ready, either locally or on a USB flash drive.
  • You are prepared for a restart and possible reinstallation.

Use the stuck-radio guidance when

  • Airplane mode is visibly Off.
  • Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth remains disabled rather than merely disconnected.
  • The normal controls and general networking steps have not restored the radios.
