A 400 usually means malformed request data, URL, cookies, caching, or server limits; a 403 usually means a firewall or security layer blocked the request; a 500 indicates a PHP or server-side failure; and a 404 means the endpoint cannot be reached at the requested path. Correct the URL and case-sensitive action, then test one change at a time so you know which layer fixed the problem.

What admin-ajax.php does
WordPress routes its AJAX requests through one core endpoint: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. JavaScript sends an HTTP request to that file, includes an action value, and WordPress uses that value to select a PHP callback. The callback is registered with a hook such as wp_ajax_my_action. Requests from logged-out visitors use a separate wp_ajax_nopriv_my_action hook.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →An error can therefore originate in several places: the browser and its cookies, the JavaScript request, WordPress hooks, a plugin or theme callback, PHP resource limits, the web server, or a firewall/CDN in front of the site. The status code tells you which branch to investigate first.
| Status | Most likely layer | First check | Typical remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 Bad Request | Request data, URL, cookies, cache, or limits | Network request URL and payload | Use the correct endpoint, supply the exact action, clear cookies/cache, and review limits |
| 403 Forbidden | Firewall, security plugin, WAF, CDN, or bot protection | Security and edge logs | Adjust the blocking rule or narrowly allow /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php |
| 500 Internal Server Error | PHP callback, plugin/theme code, memory, permissions, or host resources | PHP/server error log | Fix the named failure, isolate the plugin/theme, and correct resources |
| 404 Not Found | Wrong or rewritten URL, missing file, or misrouting proxy | Whether the requested path is exactly the core endpoint | Correct the URL and investigate rewrites, CDN routing, or a damaged installation |
There is no dependable published frequency figure for these errors, so treat the status code and your own logs—not a supposed “most common” statistic—as the deciding evidence.

Start with a controlled diagnosis
1. Reproduce the error safely
Use a staging copy if the request changes orders, accounts, or other production data. Record the page, browser, user state (logged in or logged out), time, and the exact action that triggers the failure. Do not make several unrelated changes at once; otherwise a successful retry will not tell you what solved the problem.
2. Read the response in DevTools
- Open the affected page and press
F12(or choose Inspect). - Select the Network tab and filter for
admin-ajax.php. - Repeat the action that fails.
- Open the failed request and note its status, full Request URL, request method, Form Data or Payload, response body, and response headers.
- Copy the exact
actionvalue and compare it with the PHP hook name. Treat capitalization, underscores, and spelling as significant.
The response body often contains a useful PHP warning, a firewall message, or a WordPress-generated error even when the page displays only “AJAX error.” Preserve that body before refreshing.

3. Isolate one variable at a time
A practical order is: verify the URL and payload, test in a private window, inspect caching, temporarily disable security layers, test with the CDN/WAF bypassed, switch to a default theme, deactivate plugins one by one, and then read server logs. Restore each component after its individual test unless it is the confirmed cause.
Fix an “admin-ajax.php 400 Bad Request”
Clear stale browser state
Open the page in a private or incognito window. If the request works there, clear cookies and cached data for the affected site in the normal profile and sign in again. Corrupted sessions and cookies can make an otherwise valid request fail.
Use WordPress’s endpoint instead of a hardcoded path
Hardcoded domains, subdirectories, HTTP schemes, or old staging URLs are common causes. In an administration screen, WordPress exposes the JavaScript variable ajaxurl. On a public-facing page, that variable is not supplied automatically; pass the URL from PHP with admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ).

wp_localize_script(
'my-script',
'myAjax',
array(
'url' => admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ),
'nonce' => wp_create_nonce( 'my_action' ),
)
);
Your JavaScript should then use the localized URL rather than constructing one from the current page:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
jQuery.post(
myAjax.url,
{
action: 'my_action',
nonce: myAjax.nonce,
value: jQuery('#value').val()
}
);
Check the rendered page source or the Network panel to confirm that the URL points to the current site and includes the expected /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php path.
Check the case-sensitive action
Every request must include an action parameter. The string is arbitrary, but it must match the hook exactly. my_action, my-Action, and My_Action select different hooks. A typo in either JavaScript or PHP can produce a 400 response or an unhandled request.
Exclude the endpoint from page caching
Full-page or URL-cache rules can replay an old response, strip request data, or cache a nonce-bearing request. Inspect your caching plugin and server cache. One reported case was resolved by excluding admin-ajax.php from cached URLs. Apply an endpoint-specific exclusion rather than disabling all caching, purge existing cache, and test again.
Review request-size and input limits
Low max_input_vars, post_max_size, or PHP memory_limit settings can reject a large form or complex request. Compare the payload size and fields in DevTools with the limits shown by your host or PHP information page. Ask the host to raise a limit when you cannot change it, and retest with the smallest payload that still reproduces the error.

Fix an “admin-ajax.php 403 Forbidden”
A 403 generally means a security layer denied the request before the callback completed. WordPress itself may be functioning normally.
Identify which layer blocked it
- Check the event or firewall log in your CDN, such as a Cloudflare rule log, for the timestamp and request path.
- Review security-plugin logs from tools such as Wordfence or Sucuri for a blocked AJAX request, IP, rule ID, or false-positive pattern.
- Ask the host whether ModSecurity or another hosting WAF rejected the request.
- Check CDN bot-management or rate-limit events, especially when the request fails only for some visitors or locations.
Allow only the required endpoint
If a rule is confirmed as the cause, create the narrowest exception possible for your own site’s /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php path, HTTP method, and expected traffic. Do not globally disable the firewall or allow every request to /wp-admin/. A Cloudflare OWASP Core Ruleset false positive, for example, can require adjusting a custom filter expression so the site’s own hostname is not treated as hostile.
After changing a rule, purge edge cache if the provider requires it, retry from the same browser and user state, and confirm that unrelated protected paths remain blocked. If the host controls ModSecurity, provide the request timestamp, rule ID, and path so support can make a targeted adjustment.
Consider nonce and authentication behavior
A security layer may react to unusual parameters, but a nonce failure is normally returned by WordPress code rather than as an edge 403. Ensure the nonce is generated for the intended action and sent under the field name that check_ajax_referer() expects. Do not solve a nonce problem by weakening the firewall.
Fix an “admin-ajax.php 500 Internal Server Error”
Read the server-side log first
Open the PHP error log, web-server error log, or the host’s application log for the exact request time. A 500 response usually names the failing function, file, or plugin. Capture the first fatal error and its stack trace before repeatedly refreshing the page.

Isolate plugins and the theme
- On staging, deactivate all plugins and retry the request.
- If it works, reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each activation.
- When the failure returns, leave the identified plugin disabled and test its settings or update with its developer.
- If all plugins are off and the error remains, switch temporarily to a default WordPress theme.
- Restore the original theme and unaffected plugins only after the test, so the site’s normal functionality is not left disabled.
This sequence distinguishes a callback bug from a core, theme, or hosting problem. A plugin that works for logged-in users but fails for visitors may be missing its unauthenticated hook; a plugin that fails only with a particular payload may be exhausting a PHP limit.
Check memory and hosting resources
WordPress commonly runs with a default memory limit of 64 MB or 128 MB, but the effective value depends on the WordPress version, PHP configuration, host, and site setup. Check the value reported by the host and whether the process was killed for exceeding it. If the host permits an increase, add a WP_MEMORY_LIMIT definition in wp-config.php above the line that says WordPress should stop editing the file, using a value approved by the host:
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
The value shown is an example, not a universal requirement. Raising WordPress’s setting cannot override a lower server or PHP limit. WooCommerce installations in particular should have their input, post-size, and memory settings checked with the host when large cart or checkout requests are involved.
Verify permissions, disk space, and PHP compatibility
Inspect the file and directory permissions, available disk space, PHP version, and process limits reported by the host. A deployment that copied files with the wrong owner or removed a required extension can fail only when the AJAX callback runs. Correct the environment or ask hosting support to do so rather than editing core files blindly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix an “admin-ajax.php 404 Not Found”
Specific 404 behavior varies by rewrite and hosting configuration, so begin with direct verification rather than assuming a plugin fault.
Best Value
Confirm the requested path
The request should target the current site’s /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. Compare the Network-panel URL with the site’s canonical domain, HTTPS scheme, subdirectory (if any), and trailing path. A stale staging hostname, a missing subdirectory, or an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect can send the request to a location where the file does not exist.
Confirm the core file exists
Using your host’s file manager or secure deployment process, verify that wp-admin/admin-ajax.php is present in the WordPress installation. Do not create a substitute file in a plugin directory. If the file is missing or damaged, compare the installation with a clean copy of the same WordPress version and replace only verified core files after taking a backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck rewrites and proxies
Temporarily bypass a CDN or reverse proxy and test the origin. Review web-server rewrite rules and any security or “hide wp-admin” plugin that may be remapping the path. If the origin returns 200 but the public URL returns 404, the misrouting is at the proxy, CDN, or web-server layer.
Build a correct AJAX request
Register both authentication hooks when necessary
Use the authenticated hook for logged-in users and the nopriv hook for logged-out visitors. Register both when the feature is intentionally public:
add_action( 'wp_ajax_my_action', 'my_action_handler' );
add_action( 'wp_ajax_nopriv_my_action', 'my_action_handler' );
function my_action_handler() {
check_ajax_referer( 'my_action', 'nonce' );
// Validate and sanitize every submitted value here.
$value = isset( $_POST['value'] )
? sanitize_text_field( wp_unslash( $_POST['value'] ) )
: '';
if ( '' === $value ) {
wp_send_json_error( array( 'message' => 'A value is required.' ), 400 );
}
wp_send_json_success( array( 'value' => $value ) );
wp_die();
}
The nonce check should happen before the operation. Keep authorization checks separate from nonce validation: a valid nonce does not grant a user permission to edit data. Validate types and permissions, return a deliberate JSON response, and end the handler with wp_die() as expected by the AJAX endpoint.
Match field names and response expectations
Compare every JavaScript field with the PHP code that reads it. A request that sends post_id while the handler expects id can fail validation or trigger a PHP notice that becomes a 500 under strict settings. If JavaScript expects JSON, return JSON consistently; do not print debugging text, HTML, or warnings before the response.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this status-code decision path
- 400: inspect cookies, URL,
action, cache exclusions, and PHP input/resource limits. - 403: inspect CDN, WAF, security-plugin, ModSecurity, and bot-protection logs; make a path-specific exception only after identifying the rule.
- 500: read the PHP/server log, then isolate plugins, theme, memory, permissions, and host resources.
- 404: verify the exact URL and file, then test rewrites and the CDN/proxy against the origin.
- After each change, repeat the same request and record the result. Re-enable components that were not responsible.
When the error disappears only after disabling several layers, re-enable them in reverse order to find the first component that brings the failure back. That component—not the last setting you changed—is the one to correct.
Last resort: restore a damaged core file
If logs and isolation point to a corrupted admin-ajax.php, back up the site and database, confirm the installed WordPress version, and replace the file with a fresh copy from the corresponding WordPress download. Never mix files from a different version or modify the core file to hide an application error. If the file is intact but the endpoint still fails, provide your host or developer with the request URL, status, response body, timestamps, and relevant log entries for escalation.
Quick Recap
Prevent future admin-ajax.php failures
- Generate the endpoint with
ajaxurlin admin screens oradmin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' )localized to front-end scripts. - Keep the
actionstring identical in JavaScript and both PHP hook names, including capitalization. - Use nonces, capability checks, input validation, and a terminating
wp_die()in every handler. - Exclude the endpoint from full-page caching while preserving normal security controls.
- Document any CDN, WAF, ModSecurity, or security-plugin exception for the path and review it after rule updates.
- Monitor PHP and web-server logs so a 500 can be tied to a function and timestamp.
- Test logged-in and logged-out behavior separately whenever the feature serves both audiences.
- Keep a tested backup and a staging environment so plugin, theme, and WordPress updates can be isolated safely.
