First, note exactly when the stream freezes. A pause at every repeat points toward the MP4’s loop boundary—often timing, keyframes, or audio that outlasts the video. A freeze that happens unpredictably calls for checking FFmpeg’s output and load, YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages, and your upload connection. The right fix depends on which pattern you see; without your command, file details, logs, and YouTube errors, no single flag can be identified as the cause.
1. Identify when the freeze happens
Record the time of each freeze and whether it repeats at the same point in the video. Also note whether audio continues, whether local playback or a recording of the outgoing stream is affected, and whether the YouTube preview shows the same problem.

- At every loop boundary: investigate the source file’s audio and video durations, timestamps, and keyframes, as well as how FFmpeg loops the input.
- At irregular times or increasingly often: look for FFmpeg errors, high CPU load, YouTube ingest warnings, and changes in outbound upload stability.
- Only some viewers report buffering: compare their reports with the encoder preview and YouTube’s health information before changing the loop command. Viewer-side buffering alone does not establish that the MP4 or loop boundary is faulty.
These are clues, not diagnoses. Keep a short log of timestamps and what you observe; it makes comparisons between FFmpeg, the preview, and the source playback more useful.
2. Check that FFmpeg is looping the intended input
-stream_loop is an input option. Put it immediately before the -i for the MP4 you want to repeat. For example, the relevant ordering is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 ...
This illustrates option placement, not a complete streaming command: the output options, destination, and stream key depend on your setup. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so placing -stream_loop -1 after the input may not loop that file. Check the syntax against the FFmpeg version installed on your system and the output you intend to use. The official FFmpeg documentation describes option scope and placement.
For a file used as a live source, -re can pace reading in real time. If the loop does not repeat, confirm that the option is before the correct -i and that FFmpeg can seek back to the beginning of that input. Do not assume that changing unrelated timestamp flags will repair an input that cannot loop cleanly.
3. Diagnose a pause at every repeat
Compare the audio and video durations
Inspect the MP4’s streams and determine whether it contains audio and whether that audio runs longer than the video. If audio outlasts the picture, the video may hold its final frame at the boundary while the audio continues. That is a possible explanation to test, not a guaranteed cause. If audio is not needed, test a version without it and compare the loop boundary.

Check timestamps and keyframes
Stream-copy looping depends on the source’s timestamp and keyframe conditions. If the boundary still pauses, make a remuxed copy of the input and test that copy as a diagnostic. A remux can help distinguish a source-container or timing issue from a problem elsewhere in the stream, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Compare the same portion of the file in ordinary local playback with the looped output. If local playback is smooth but the repeated boundary is not, focus on the repeat behavior and stream durations. If the local file itself pauses at that point, resolve the source issue before treating it as an ingest fault.
4. Separate encoder, YouTube, and network problems
Inspect FFmpeg output and the local result
Review the FFmpeg console from before and after the freeze. Check stream mapping, warnings or errors, output progress, and CPU load. If you are also saving a local archive or can inspect the encoded output locally, compare it with the YouTube preview. A fault visible in FFmpeg’s output or local result points to a different place than a clean local output paired with a failing live stream.

Read YouTube Live Control Room health messages
Check the stream preview, health indicator, and timestamped errors in YouTube Live Control Room. Match each message to the time of the freeze instead of relying on a generic settings recipe. YouTube’s guidance notes that when the encoder preview is healthy but the live result is not, the outbound connection may be the problem; check available upload capacity and contact your ISP about persistent connection faults. Confirm the settings match the ingest errors
YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. The applicable bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table for your chosen combination rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
YouTube’s error guidance also covers configuration-dependent faults involving codec or profile, resolution, bitrate, the number of audio or video streams, interlacing, and GOP or keyframe interval. Follow the specific message in Live Control Room: it is more relevant to your current ingest than a recipe written for different settings. If your upload cannot sustain the selected configuration, lower the resolution or otherwise choose settings that fit the available connection. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with movement and audio similar to the real stream, monitor stream health, and review messages during the event.

RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. If YouTube reports a connection timeout or certificate error, compare the server URL and protocol in your encoder with the values provided in Live Control Room. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and check YouTube’s guidance on the required port for the connection. Do not substitute a guessed URL or port. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
6. Fixes by symptom
