YouTube needs that source feed to stay active: keep the computer awake and connected, or move the streaming job to a suitable device or cloud service that can keep running independently.
Why turning off the computer stops the livestream
In an encoder-based stream, a computer or hardware encoder sends video to YouTube. When the computer running a software encoder shuts down, that encoder stops sending content, so the live feed ends. YouTube’s encoder guidance puts it plainly: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
A scheduled livestream page is not itself a video source. Scheduling creates a page and prepares the event, but an encoder still has to connect and send video. Auto-start and auto-stop settings can control when an encoder starts or ends a stream; they do not keep the encoder running after its host computer is switched off. Keep using the same computer
If the stream is generated on your computer—for example, with screen capture, gameplay, a webcam, or a software encoder—leave that computer on, awake, connected to the internet, and running the streaming application for the duration of the stream.

- Check the encoder. Make sure the streaming application is open and still shows that it is connected and sending video.
- Prevent sleep or shutdown. Change the computer’s power settings so it does not sleep, hibernate, or shut down during the broadcast. Keep it powered, especially for a long stream.
- Verify the stream key and server URL. In the encoder, confirm that the correct YouTube stream key and server URL are configured. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s “password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Preview before going live. In YouTube Live Control Room, check that the incoming feed appears in preview, then start the event as required. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream’s audio and video. YouTube live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
- Check upload capacity and stability. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above your stream’s bitrate. A network interruption can break a stream even if the computer and encoder remain on. YouTube’s streaming tips explain bandwidth and connection checks.
If the stream must continue with the computer off
The encoding or playback job needs to run somewhere else. Which option fits depends on whether you are sending a live camera or other source, capturing gameplay or a screen, or playing prerecorded videos.

What scheduling, archives, and DVR can—and cannot—fix
Scheduling and auto-start do not replace an encoder that keeps sending video. If the encoder host is off, changing those YouTube settings will not restore its feed.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. An archive is a replay of a stream, not a continuation of the live broadcast after the encoder stops. Long-stream DVR is a separate feature: rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
- The stream ends as soon as you shut down the computer: That is expected if its software encoder is the source. Keep it running or use a compatible independent encoder for your type of content.
- The computer stays on, but YouTube loses the feed: Confirm the encoder is still running and connected; check the stream key and server URL, then inspect the network for interruptions and ensure adequate upload headroom.
- A scheduled event has a watch page but no picture: Scheduling created the event, but the encoder may not have connected or started sending content. Check its connection and the Live Control Room preview.
- The replay exists, but the channel is no longer live: The archive preserves a recording; it does not keep the live feed going.
- You need prerecorded playback, but not a camera feed: Choose a solution whose documented workflow supports scheduled or looping prerecorded media. YouTube identifies AJA HELO Plus for scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer; StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded-video playback.
- You need to stream a camera or live production: Use a compatible standalone hardware encoder or a hosted service designed for that input. A prerecorded-video looping service is not a substitute for a live camera encoder.
Plan and test before a long broadcast
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting it at least 15 minutes ahead so you can verify the incoming feed. Preview the audio and video, monitor the stream while it is live, and check that any archive was created afterward. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees against network or equipment failure. YouTube’s live streaming tips provide the operational guidance.

Finally, confirm that you have the rights to stream every video, audio track, and other material in a prerecorded playlist. A service that keeps a feed online does not grant content rights or determine whether a stream complies with YouTube’s rules.
