Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf you can’t access a YouTube stream key, first confirm that you’ve selected the right channel and signed in with the Google account that was invited. Then check the user’s role in YouTube Studio → Settings → Permissions. A Viewer cannot access the key; resetting it specifically requires a channel Owner or Manager. Once the role is correct, copy the key from Live Control Room and update your encoder.
Check the channel and Google account first
- Open YouTube and confirm that the intended channel is selected. A Google account may have access to more than one channel, so being signed in does not guarantee that the correct channel is active.
- Confirm that you are signed in with the Google account that received the channel invitation. If you use a different account, the permission entry may not apply.
A Brand Account connection does not give every collaborator the same capabilities. YouTube manages access through channel permissions, and the role assigned to each user controls what they can do. See YouTube’s channel permissions guidance.

Check the role in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Permissions.
- Find the invited user and verify that the access entry exists and has the intended role.
- If the invitation is pending, have the invitee accept it using the invited Google account.
For Brand Account-linked channels using migrated access, delegation is managed through YouTube Studio channel permissions. The primary owner can move to this system through Settings → Permissions → Move permissions, then invite users and assign roles. Existing Brand Account users may need a role set and a new invitation sent.
Match the role to the action you need
| Role or task | What YouTube’s guidance establishes |
|---|---|
| Viewer | Cannot access the stream key, edit stream settings, or start or end live streams. |
| Editor | Can manage live streams under YouTube’s channel-permissions role table, but is not permitted to reset a stream key according to the stream-settings guidance. |
| Manager or Owner | Can manage live streams. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance specifies that only an Owner or Manager can reset a stream key. |
This distinction matters: permission to manage a live stream does not necessarily include permission to reset its key. Check YouTube’s channel permissions role table and its live stream settings instructions for the exact action you need.

Find or reset the key, then update the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Reveal and copy the stream key if you need to enter it in your encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so share them only with people and services that need access.
- If the existing key may be exposed or you need to replace it, use the reset control beside the hidden key. You must be a channel Owner or Manager to reset it.
- Replace the saved key in the encoder with the current one. If the encoder also asks for a server URL, check that it matches the current stream settings.
Resetting a key invalidates the old one for the stream, so update every encoder or configuration that uses it. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance explains where to obtain or reset the key; its encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder reports an error.
If access is correct but streaming still fails
- The encoder rejects the key: Check that you copied the current key for the intended channel and replaced any older saved key. Verify the server URL against the stream settings as well.
- The software uses YouTube sign-in instead of a key: YouTube recommends contacting the software provider for help with that authentication method.
- You can see the key but cannot go live: Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. These are eligibility checks, separate from stream-key permissions. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- The role or invitation looks right, but the error remains: Recheck the selected channel, signed-in account, accepted invitation, and whether the blocked action is key access, key reset, or going live. YouTube does not document one universal error string called a “stream key permission error,” so the exact cause depends on those details and the encoder’s authentication method.
Or let it run in the cloud
