What the error means when the site still appears online
WordPress stores posts, pages, settings, users, plugin data and most site content in a MySQL-compatible database. PHP must connect to that database for a dynamic request to complete. If the connection cannot be established, WordPress displays its standard database error instead of rendering the requested page.

Seeing a homepage, cached page or static asset does not prove that the database is healthy. A reverse-proxy cache, a page-cache plugin, a host cache or a previously generated static response can continue serving content after database requests begin failing. The front end may work while /wp-admin/, search, comments, checkout or a particular API request fails. WordPress Developer Resources describes the message as evidence of a problem connecting to the database, not proof that the database has been deleted.
Capture the exact scope before changing anything. Record the URL, the time, whether visitors and administrators see the same result, and whether the message is the standard WordPress text or a more specific PHP/MySQL error. A failure affecting only one operation can point to a plugin, theme or query problem; a failure affecting every dynamic request usually points to credentials, reachability, service status or permissions.

Use this order of checks
- Confirm which requests fail and save the exact error text and timestamp.
- Open the
wp-config.phpin the actual WordPress installation root and verify all four database constants. - Ask the host to confirm that MySQL or MariaDB is running, reachable and accepting the configured account.
- Make a current database backup before repairing tables or changing data.
- Check tables with phpMyAdmin or the host’s database tools if the service is reachable but tables report errors.
- Use WordPress repair mode only for the shortest possible period, then remove its setting.
- Enable controlled logging and escalate with timestamps and logs when configuration and table checks are clean.
This order separates a reversible typo from a service outage and prevents a table repair from masking an exhausted server, a recurring crash or a security incident.
Verify wp-config.php first
WordPress’s official guidance says an error in wp-config.php is a usual cause of the database-connection message. Open the file in the directory that contains wp-admin, wp-includes and wp-content; a similarly named backup file or a different staging copy will not affect the live site.

Never paste a real password into a support forum, ticket visible to other users or public log. If the database password was recently changed, update WordPress to the new value or change the database account back to the value already in the file. Keep the quotes and semicolons intact.

Check edits that look correct at a glance
- Remove accidental leading or trailing spaces inside quoted values.
- Check for curly “smart” quotes, invisible characters, a missing semicolon or an unclosed quote introduced by a text editor.
- Make sure the file is saved as plain text with the expected encoding.
- Confirm that you edited the production file, not a local copy, staging site or backup such as
wp-config.php.bak. - Compare capitalization and punctuation exactly. Database names and usernames can be case-sensitive on some systems.
When DB_HOST is not simply localhost
Some hosts place the database on another machine, require a non-default port or provide a Unix socket. Examples of documented forms include mysql.example.com:3307 for a named host and port, or a socket path supplied by the provider. Use the syntax the host gives you; guessing a port or socket can make a correct account appear unreachable. If the database is remote, the host must also allow the web server’s address through its network and firewall rules.
Ask the host to check the database service and account
A correct configuration file cannot connect to a service that is stopped, suspended, overloaded or refusing the account. WordPress’s common-errors guidance specifically identifies provider outages and quota shutdowns as host-side causes.
Questions for support or your server administrator
- Is the MySQL or MariaDB service running, and are there current crashes or restarts?
- Has this account reached a database-count, storage, connection or resource quota?
- Is the database or hosting account suspended for billing, policy or abuse reasons?
- Does the configured user still exist and have privileges on the exact
DB_NAMEdatabase? - Is the database listening on the host and port specified by
DB_HOST? - For a remote database, are DNS resolution, firewall rules and network access working from the web server?
Ask for the provider’s current hostname, port or socket path rather than substituting a value from an old migration guide. A host can change a server name or move an account while leaving the WordPress files untouched.

Interpreting common host-side outcomes
- Service stopped or repeatedly crashing: have the provider restore the service and inspect its error log, disk health and memory limits. Repeatedly changing passwords will not fix a failing service.
- Quota or connection limit reached: remove the cause of the exhaustion, raise the limit where appropriate and ask whether abandoned databases, oversized logs or runaway queries are consuming the allowance.
- User lacks privileges: have the host reattach the account to the named database with the required WordPress permissions. Do not grant broad server-wide privileges when database-level access is sufficient.
- Remote connection blocked: correct the allowed source address, firewall rule, port or DNS record using the provider’s documented values.
Back up before checking or repairing tables
Do not run a repair operation on the only copy of your data. Make and retain a current database backup first, and if possible store a second copy outside the hosting account. Include the database name, backup timestamp and the WordPress files needed to restore the site.
phpMyAdmin backup and table check
- Open phpMyAdmin from the hosting control panel, not an untrusted third-party copy.
- Select the database whose name matches
DB_NAME. - Use the Export function to create a complete SQL backup and download it.
- After the backup finishes, select the tables and inspect the status or maintenance actions offered by the host.
- Choose Repair Table only when a table is reported as damaged and the database service is otherwise reachable.
- Reload the affected WordPress requests and review the table status again.
Menus differ by phpMyAdmin version and hosting provider. If you cannot identify the correct database or interpret an engine error, stop and ask the host to perform the check. A successful table repair does not resolve a disk failure, an exhausted resource limit or a service that keeps crashing.
Use WordPress’s repair page only temporarily
When the database is reachable but one or more tables need a WordPress-level repair or optimization, WordPress can expose a maintenance page. Add this line to wp-config.php above the line that says WordPress should stop editing the file:

/wp-admin/maint/repair.phpon the affected site. - Choose the repair action shown by WordPress and wait for it to finish.
- Test the front end, login and the request that originally failed.
- Remove the
WP_ALLOW_REPAIRline immediately after the repair page is no longer needed.
WordPress support guidance warns that this page can be accessed without login credentials while the setting remains enabled. Leaving it active gives an unauthenticated visitor a maintenance interface, so removal is part of the repair—not an optional cleanup step. If the page itself cannot connect, return to service, network and credentials checks instead of repeatedly loading it.
Separate unreachable databases from damaged tables

Enable debugging without exposing secrets
WP_DEBUG can distinguish a PHP, plugin or database exception from a basic connection failure, but displaying detailed errors on a production site can reveal credentials, file paths and query data. Use logging rather than public display while visitors are present.

Turn debugging off after collecting the evidence if the site is public. Do not include the contents of wp-config.php or passwords when sending logs to support.
What to send with an escalation
- The exact URL and whether the failure affects visitors, login, administration or one endpoint.
- The first observed timestamp and your time zone.
- The complete visible error text and the relevant log excerpt with secrets removed.
- WordPress, PHP and MySQL or MariaDB versions.
- The four configuration values’ status without revealing the password itself; for example, state that the host confirmed the database name and user, and that the password was reset.
- Whether phpMyAdmin can open the database and whether a backup was completed.
- Any recent migration, password reset, DNS change, plugin update, traffic spike or hosting-plan change.
When a compromise or resource problem is possible
Official WordPress troubleshooting guidance notes that a compromise is another possibility when the configuration and host checks are clean. Treat recurring connection failures, unexpected administrator accounts, altered plugins or themes, unfamiliar scheduled tasks, and unexplained database growth as investigation signals rather than as ordinary typos.
Ask the host to review authentication, web-server and database logs around the first failure, check CPU, memory, disk and connection usage, and preserve evidence before deleting suspicious files. Run a malware scan appropriate to your hosting environment, rotate credentials from a trusted device, and verify that restored files come from known-good copies. If resource exhaustion is involved, identify the process or query consuming connections instead of simply increasing limits; a higher limit can postpone the outage while allowing the underlying runaway workload to grow.
Choose the resolution path by access and urgency

Prevent the next database outage
- Keep automated, tested database backups and periodically perform a restore to verify that the backup is usable.
- Record the provider’s current database hostname, port or socket and the account-to-database mapping in a secure password manager.
- Review storage, connection and CPU quotas before a busy campaign, migration or major plugin deployment.
- Apply WordPress, PHP, database and plugin updates through a staging copy or a maintenance window when possible.
- Limit database privileges to what the application needs and remove old accounts after migrations.
- Monitor database service restarts, failed logins, connection counts, disk space and slow or long-running queries.
- Keep a private copy of the working
wp-config.phpstructure, but never store production passwords in public repositories or tickets. - After any temporary diagnostic setting such as
WP_ALLOW_REPAIRor verbose debugging, remove it and confirm the live response no longer exposes internal details.
Final recovery check
Once the host confirms service health and you have corrected any configuration or table issue, test more than the homepage. Open an ordinary post, sign in to /wp-admin/, save a harmless setting, run a search if the site has one, and check the failed URL again. Review the logs for new connection errors, confirm that temporary repair and debugging settings are gone, and keep the backup made before the repair.
The durable fix is the one that matches the failure: restore connectivity when the service or credentials are wrong, repair identified tables only after a backup, and investigate recurring or suspicious failures as infrastructure or security problems rather than repeating the same edit.
