How to Fix a Windows PC That Won’t Wake From Hibernate

A PC that will not wake from hibernate may have a resume failure or a display/peripheral issue. Try the model’s supported wake method, then check devices and powercfg diagnostics.

If your Windows PC will not wake from hibernate, first press its power button—the wake method supported by the computer—and wait for it to resume. If the computer appears to start but the screen or a connected device stays unresponsive, troubleshoot that device separately. Wake behavior varies by PC model, firmware, device, and power state, so a keyboard or mouse is not a universal workaround.

First confirm whether the PC hibernated

Hibernate is not the same as sleep or a full shutdown. In hibernate, Windows saves system context to a hibernation file and the computer enters the ACPI S4 power state; the machine appears off, and Windows attempts to restore the saved session when it resumes. Sleep is a different power state.

Fast Startup can also use a hibernation file, but it is a hybrid shutdown—not the same session transition as waking from hibernate. If you are unsure what happened, check how you selected the power action and whether the PC was actually put into Hibernate. Microsoft explains these distinctions in its System power states documentation.

Try the wake method supported by your PC

  1. Press the computer’s power button once, using the procedure documented for that model.
  2. Wait briefly for the system to resume before pressing other keys or buttons.
  3. If that does not work, consult the PC maker’s manual or support page for the model-specific wake behavior.

Do not assume that opening the lid, pressing a keyboard key, moving a mouse, or sending a network signal will wake every hibernating PC. Microsoft notes that wake capabilities differ between computers and devices, and depend on support in the system, firmware, and device. See its power-state guidance and Windows shutdown, sleep, and hibernate help.

If Windows resumes but the display or a peripheral does not

A PC that has resumed with a blank screen or an unresponsive accessory may have a device problem rather than a failed hibernate resume. Microsoft’s user guidance recommends disconnecting and reconnecting the affected device, restarting if needed, and checking for current drivers.

  • For a monitor, disconnect and reconnect its cable; if possible, check whether the PC responds through another display.
  • For another connected device, unplug and reconnect it after the system is responsive.
  • If the issue remains, restart the PC and check the device maker’s support page for current drivers.

These steps address devices that malfunction after waking; they do not establish why a particular computer failed to resume. See Microsoft’s guidance on sleep and hibernate.

Use powercfg to inspect power and wake information

Open Terminal or Command Prompt and run the following commands. Use an elevated window if Windows requests administrator permission. They provide information about power states, wake history, configured devices, and timers; they are diagnostic clues, not a complete explanation of every failed hibernate resume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Command What it reports
powercfg /a Sleep states available on this PC.
powercfg /lastwake Information about what woke the system from its last sleep transition, if recorded.
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed Devices currently configured to wake the system.
powercfg /waketimers Active wake timers.

Microsoft documents these options in the powercfg command-line options. A device appearing in the wake-armed list does not prove it can wake your particular PC from hibernate; nor does an empty or unhelpful last-wake report identify the cause of a resume failure.

Rebuild hibernation configuration only as a controlled test

If you can sign in to Windows and want to test the hibernation configuration, Microsoft documents turning hibernation off and back on. This is not a guaranteed fix. While hibernation is off, the PC cannot hibernate; turn it back on afterward if you want to use the feature.

  1. Open Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Run powercfg /hibernate off.
  3. Run powercfg /hibernate on to restore hibernation.

Windows needs a hibernation file to hibernate. Microsoft’s documentation lists default sizes of 40% of physical memory for a full hibernation file and 20% for a reduced file used for Fast Startup only; these are documented defaults, not recommended adjustments or evidence that file size caused a wake problem. See powercfg options and system power states.

When the problem persists

Contact the PC or motherboard maker if the supported wake method still fails or the problem recurs. Include the exact computer model, Windows version and build, relevant device-driver versions, and what the power button and display do during an attempted resume. For update and support context, Microsoft’s startup settings guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11.
