First decide what the screenshot should contain: the visible viewport, one scrollable element, or the full page. In Playwright, use fullPage: true for the full scrollable page. If the result is still too short or unexpectedly tall, check which element scrolls and whether CSS or responsive layout limits the content; full-page capture does not create content that the page has not rendered.
Choose the capture height you actually need
A viewport screenshot records the currently visible browser area. A full-page screenshot aims to capture the document’s scrollable page, while an element screenshot targets a particular component. These are different capture goals, not interchangeable height settings. Playwright documents its screenshot options, including fullPage: true, at Playwright: Screenshots.

- If you want only what a visitor sees without scrolling, use a viewport screenshot.
- If you want the whole document, use full-page capture.
- If the content lives inside a scrolling panel, capture that element or otherwise target its actual scroll container; document-level full-page capture may not include all of the panel’s contents.
Find what is determining the page height
Check the actual scroll root
Scroll the page and observe where the scrollbar and content move. If the document moves, the page itself is scrolling. If a panel moves while the surrounding page remains still, that panel is a nested scroll container. A screenshot of the document may show the panel’s visible portion rather than all of its internal content. Use element capture when available, or a method that captures the relevant scroll container.

Inspect computed styles for html, body, the main wrapper, and any scrolling panel. Fixed heights and viewport-relative rules such as height: 100vh can constrain where content is rendered. A Playwright issue response explains that capture does not change page layout and describes a 100vh constraint as one cause of content not appearing below the viewport: Playwright issue #28027.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Change the site’s CSS only if the constraint is unintended. A content-driven height or min-height may be appropriate for a region that should grow with its contents, but the right fix depends on the page’s design and scroll behavior.
Test whether the layout depends on viewport size
As a diagnostic, temporarily use a taller viewport and compare the capture. Playwright’s page.setViewportSize() changes the page viewport; its documentation recommends setting viewport dimensions before navigation when a site responds to them: Playwright: page.setViewportSize(). In the cited issue, a maintainer suggested a test viewport of 1280 × 3000. That was an example for diagnosis, not a universal recommended size.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
If the taller viewport changes the screenshot height or reveals content, viewport-dependent layout may be involved. Responsive breakpoints can also rearrange or resize content when the viewport changes, so restore the intended dimensions and verify the final layout there.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Replace the example URL and dimensions with your target page and intended viewport. For a viewport-only image, omit fullPage: true. For a specific element, Playwright supports taking a screenshot from a locator:
await page.locator('.target-panel').screenshot({ path: 'panel.png' });
Choose a selector that identifies the element you want. An element screenshot is not a substitute for full-document capture if your goal is the complete page.

Compare captures without changing several variables at once
- Record the intended target: viewport, document, or element.
- Keep the viewport width and height, browser engine and version, page state, and capture mode fixed.
- Compare the image height with the document or element height you intended to capture.
- Change one variable at a time—such as capture mode, scroll root, CSS constraint, or viewport—and capture again.
- Once the cause is isolated, restore the desired viewport and confirm the page still behaves correctly there.
This makes it easier to distinguish a capture-option mismatch from a page-layout issue. Do not assume that a taller viewport is the production fix; it is a test that may change responsive behavior.

Troubleshoot common wrong-height results
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The image stops at the visible screen even though you expected the whole page. | Viewport capture was used instead of full-page capture. | In Playwright, set fullPage: true; in another tool, select its equivalent full-page mode. |
| The document capture includes only part of a long panel. | The panel, rather than the document, is the scroll container. | Inspect which element scrolls; target the panel with element capture or a method that captures the actual scroll container. |
| The page appears to end at roughly one viewport tall. | A fixed or viewport-relative height may constrain a wrapper or scroll region. | Inspect computed heights on html, body, the wrapper, and the scrolling element. Check whether a rule such as height: 100vh is intentional. |
| A taller viewport reveals more content or changes the output height. | The layout may depend on viewport dimensions. | Compare at the intended dimensions and inspect responsive rules; do not treat the diagnostic viewport as a universal fix. |
| The mismatch appears only with one browser engine or version. | Rendering or capture behavior may differ by browser and version. | After checking layout and options, reproduce with current versions using the same page, viewport, state, and capture settings. A 2020 report about Chromium and vh/vw units is historical and does not establish a current general Chromium defect: Playwright issue #6342. |

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. Its cleanup steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
For a full-page capture, use the full_page parameter described in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:

When an old browser report is relevant
A 2020 Playwright issue described a Chromium full-page screenshot mismatch involving viewport-relative vh and vw units. It is a lead to test only if the problem reproduces under comparable conditions; it does not prove that current Chromium has a general full-page height bug. Compare engines and versions only after controlling the page, viewport, state, and capture options.
