First identify what is timing out: page navigation, a readiness or selector wait, screenshot rendering, or your own HTTP client deadline. Then adjust only that stage. A longer timeout will not fix a page that keeps network connections open, a target that blocks access, or a full-page capture that exceeds a provider limit.
Find which part of the screenshot request is timing out
A screenshot request can spend time waiting for the page to navigate, for a readiness condition, for an optional selector or delay, or for the browser to render the image. Separately, your application or HTTP client can stop waiting before the screenshot service finishes. Provider error formats differ, so begin with the response and diagnostics documented for the API you use.

- Read the error response. Check whether it identifies navigation, rendering, a selector, or a general request timeout.
- Check timing and status fields. If available, compare render-time data with the final page status. A slow render and a failed or blocked target are different problems.
- Check your caller’s deadline. Make sure your own HTTP client or job worker is not abandoning the request before the provider’s render window ends.
For example, ScreenshotOne documents timeout errors at its timeout guidance. ScreenshotAPI.net documents X-Page-Status and X-Render-Time-Ms in its documentation. Those headers and error details are provider-specific, not universal.

Readiness conditions answer different questions. Use the least strict condition that still includes the content your screenshot needs. Exact parameter names and supported conditions depend on the API.

| Condition | What it waits for | When it can help | Potential drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
domcontentloaded |
The document’s initial HTML has been parsed. | The basic page structure is enough, or background requests would otherwise keep a stricter wait open. | Images or client-rendered content may not yet be ready. |
load |
The page’s load event. | The page’s load-event resources matter to the image. | It may wait longer than needed for content that loads afterward. |
networkidle0 |
A provider-defined period of network quiet; Cloudflare’s screenshot example documents this option. | The page settles after its requests finish. | Pages with ongoing background requests may not become idle. |
| Selector wait | A specific element becoming available, where supported. | A particular chart, product panel, or other component must appear. | The selector can be wrong or never appear; waiting for it can consume the request budget. |
| Fixed delay | A chosen amount of time after another navigation or readiness step. | Content appears shortly after navigation and no suitable selector condition is available. | It spends time whether the content is ready or not. |
Cloudflare documents networkidle0 in its Browser Run screenshot example and exposes screenshot options in its API reference. Other APIs may use different names or support a different set of waits.
Set the timeout for the stage you diagnosed
Do not treat timeout numbers from different providers as interchangeable. They can apply to different stages: a navigation timeout is not necessarily the total time allowed for the complete render.

- If navigation is progressing but needs longer, raise the navigation limit within that provider’s documented bounds.
- If the page never reaches network idle, try a less strict readiness condition if it still produces a useful image instead of simply extending the wait.
- If a selector wait is failing, verify the selector and that the target content is available in the rendered page.
- If your client stops waiting first, align its deadline with the provider’s maximum request duration and your own job or user-facing constraints.
As documented in the Cloudflare API reference, gotoOptions.timeout has a maximum of 60,000 ms. ScreenshotAPI.net lists a whole-render timeout range of 1–30 seconds. These are separate provider settings, not general recommendations for every screenshot API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReduce capture scope when the page is unusually large
A full-page screenshot can require more work and may be subject to a height limit. If the task does not need every part of the page, try capturing the viewport or a relevant element instead. Check your provider’s options and limits before changing the capture mode.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Use a viewport screenshot when only the visible area matters.
- Use an element selector when a specific section is the deliverable and the API supports selector capture.
- Use full-page capture only when the complete page is needed; check for documented height limits.
Cloudflare’s API supports fullPage and selector options. ScreenshotAPI.net states that its full-page height is capped at 4,320 px. That cap applies to ScreenshotAPI.net, not to other providers.
Use delays only when they solve a specific readiness gap
A fixed delay can help when content appears shortly after navigation, but it consumes time inside the same end-to-end request budget. Prefer waiting for the content you need when the provider supports a selector or another relevant condition. Avoid stacking a long navigation wait and a long fixed delay without checking that the combined wait fits the provider’s render limit and your caller’s deadline.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout occurs despite a page that appears mostly loaded | Strict network-idle wait or background requests | Try load, domcontentloaded, or a selector wait if supported and adequate for the screenshot. |
| One component is missing or the selector wait expires | Selector spelling, timing, or availability of the target element | Verify the selector against the rendered page; wait for a specific element only if it is necessary. |
| The caller reports a timeout but the provider may still be rendering | Application or HTTP client deadline | Check and align the caller’s timeout with the provider’s request window. |
| Full-page capture fails or produces an excessively tall image | Capture scope or a provider’s full-page limit | Try viewport or element capture if that meets the requirement; check the provider’s height cap. |
| Render time is short but the target did not load successfully | Page status, target access, throttling, or routing | Inspect the provider’s status diagnostics. ScreenshotOne suggests a proxy retry for symptoms pointing to IP throttling or regional routing; this is provider-specific advice, not a universal remedy. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a longer timeout always the right fix?
No. First determine whether navigation, readiness, a selector wait, rendering, or your own client deadline is expiring; a longer limit will not fix a different stage.
Do all screenshot APIs use the same readiness settings?
No. Conditions and parameter names are provider-specific, so check the API you are calling.
