Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a UPI payment is pending, failed, or debited without reaching the recipient, first check the transaction in the app you used and confirm whether your bank account was debited. Then follow the timeline for the type of payment: a person-to-person transfer that could not be credited should be reversed by T+1, while a merchant payment debited without confirmation is due for reversal by T+5 under the Reserve Bank of India’s failed-transaction framework. If it remains unresolved, raise a complaint with the app or bank and track it using the transaction reference.
Check the app status and your bank account
- Open the payment in your UPI app. Go to transaction history and select the specific payment. NPCI says transaction history includes past and pending transactions, and its BHIM guidance allows users to report a declined transaction from its transaction view. Check the participating bank’s UPI app if you need to check status or raise a grievance. NPCI UPI FAQs.
- Record the details. Note the displayed status, date and time, amount, payee, and transaction or reference number. Check your bank account statement or alert as well as the app: a debit shown in one place does not by itself establish that the recipient was credited.
- Do not pay again until you know what happened. A slow or pending screen does not confirm that the first payment failed. Verify its status first to reduce the risk of paying twice.
NPCI says a UPI payment cannot be stopped once initiated. If the transaction is complete, use the app or bank to report the issue rather than expecting to cancel it. NPCI UPI FAQs.

Identify whether it was a transfer or a merchant payment
| Payment type | What to verify | RBI reversal deadline if the payment was debited but not completed |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer to a person | Whether the beneficiary’s account was credited | By T+1 if the beneficiary bank cannot credit the account |
| Merchant payment | Whether transaction confirmation reached the merchant location | Within T+5 if the account was debited but confirmation was not received |
These are different failure cases in the RBI framework; do not apply the merchant deadline to a person-to-person transfer or vice versa. “T” means the transaction date. The framework states the deadlines in days, not as a guaranteed number of clock hours. See the RBI failed-transaction turnaround-time framework.
Person-to-person transfer
If your account was debited but the recipient’s account was not credited, RBI says the beneficiary bank should auto-reverse the payment by T+1 if it is unable to credit the beneficiary. NPCI describes “deemed approved” cases as ones where the beneficiary bank has not provided online credit confirmation; if the account was not credited online, it is to be manually processed under applicable RBI guidance. Merchant payment
For a merchant payment, check whether the merchant received confirmation rather than relying only on what appeared on your screen. NPCI’s help guidelines distinguish pending or successful merchant issues from failed merchant transactions. If your account was debited but confirmation was not received at the merchant location, the RBI framework gives an auto-reversal limit of T+5. NPCI UPI help guidelines.
Allow the relevant reversal window
UPI transfer where the beneficiary was not credited
RBI’s failed-transaction framework sets the auto-reversal limit at T+1 when the payer was debited but the beneficiary could not be credited. If the reversal is delayed beyond that limit, the framework specifies compensation of ₹100 per day. The applicable case is a transfer debit without beneficiary credit—not a general promise that every pending payment will be settled on the same schedule. How NPCI’s consumer FAQ describes refunds
NPCI’s FAQ says that when a transaction fails, the money is refunded and advises contacting bank customer support if a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour. Separately, it says that for a pending debit where beneficiary credit is delayed, the amount will reach the recipient within 48 hours. These are NPCI FAQ guidance statements; they do not replace the RBI T+1 and T+5 limits for the specific failed-transaction cases described above. NPCI UPI FAQs.

Report an unresolved payment and keep track
- Use the app’s issue or grievance option. Open the transaction and look for an option such as “report issue.” In BHIM, NPCI says a declined transaction can be reported from the transaction view.
- Contact your bank with the transaction reference. If the app does not resolve the issue, contact the bank through its official customer-support channel. NPCI’s complaint facility can check a financial transaction’s status and register a complaint with the relevant member institution; NPCI says that institution is responsible for resolving it. NPCI complaint facility.
- Save your complaint number and evidence. Keep the transaction details, any relevant app screenshots or statement entry, the date you contacted support, and the response. These records make follow-up easier; not every bank requires the same documents or fields.
- Escalate if the regulated entity has not replied within the applicable period or you are dissatisfied with the resolution. RBI’s current FAQ describes escalation under the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, which came into force on July 1, 2026 and replaced the 2021 scheme for new matters. Check RBI’s current filing instructions before submitting a complaint. RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme FAQ.
Handle suspected fraud differently
If you do not recognise the transaction or suspect it was unauthorised, contact your bank directly and report it promptly. NPCI directs complaints about fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorised transactions to the customer’s bank. Do not treat a possible fraud as an ordinary pending payment while waiting for a reversal. NPCI complaint facility.
Never disclose your UPI PIN or OTP, share full credentials, or allow screen-sharing access to someone claiming they can reverse a payment. NPCI says bank customer support will never ask for your UPI PIN. NPCI UPI FAQs.
