Then check the TV’s power-saving and picture settings before assuming the screen is faulty. The menu paths below are LG examples; names and available controls vary by brand, model, and software version.
First, find out where the problem is coming from
Open the TV’s own settings menu and compare its appearance with the program or game. If the picture problem affects just one channel or source, troubleshoot that source first; if it also affects the menus and multiple inputs, check the TV’s settings and consider whether service is needed.

- One broadcast channel: Compare another channel. Poor signal quality or antenna alignment can affect an individual channel.
- One HDMI device or input: Check that the HDMI cable is securely connected at both ends, and inspect it for damage. Reseat the cable before considering a replacement.
- One streaming service, video, or game: Compare other content. Source quality and HDR or game settings can change how the picture looks.
- TV menus are also too dark to read, only part of the screen is dark, or blur appears for the first few minutes after startup: These can indicate an internal issue rather than ordinary picture calibration. LG recommends contacting support for these symptoms (LG support: dark or dim picture).
Settings may be stored separately for different inputs, so a change that helps one source might not carry over to another.
Fix a picture that looks too dark
Check energy-saving dimming
As a diagnostic step, turn off Eco, Auto Power Save, or Energy Saving and see whether the picture brightens. On LG TVs, the setting’s location depends on the webOS generation: it may be under Settings > All Settings > System or General > Energy Saving, while older versions may put it under Support or Picture. Check your model’s manual for the correct path and label. LG identifies Energy Saving as a common cause of a dim picture.

Choose a mode suited to the room
Try a different picture mode if the set is using Eco or Auto Power Save. LG’s US guide suggests Vivid for natural light, Standard for artificial light, and Cinema for a dark room. Those are manufacturer recommendations, not universal calibration rules: room lighting, screen reflectance, the TV’s capabilities, and the video itself all affect perceived brightness. (LG picture settings guide)
Adjust brightness controls carefully
If the picture still looks dim, gradually adjust the control your TV uses for overall screen brightness or backlight output. Names and behavior differ among TVs, so do not assume that Brightness, Contrast, and black-level controls do the same thing. If adjustments make the image worse, reset picture settings for the current mode using the model-specific instructions.
Check tone mapping for a dark HDR game
If the issue occurs only in a supported HDR console game on an LG setup, compare the available game tone-mapping options in that same game. LG says HGiG can look darker than Tone Mapping ON. HGiG is for supported configurations, requires HDMI, and is enabled in Game Optimizer; exact options depend on the TV and setup. This is a targeted check for that scenario, not a general fix for dark TV pictures. (LG HDR gaming guidance)

Fix colors that look oversaturated
Lower the Color or Saturation control a little at a time and compare familiar content. If the TV offers Dynamic Color or a similar enhancement, reduce or disable it; LG’s manual describes Dynamic Color as increasing color and saturation. The manual is for LG projector models BF50NST/BF60PST, so its terminology is illustrative and does not guarantee that a particular control exists on your TV. (LG product manuals)
- Use Tint only when there is a red/green color-balance problem.
- Adjust Color Temperature if the image looks too cool or too warm.
- Make one change at a time, since available controls can depend on the model, input signal, and picture mode.
LG’s US guide illustrates why its values should not be copied indiscriminately: it lists Color at 70 for Vivid in natural light, but 50 for Standard in artificial light and Cinema in a dark room. Those are mode-specific recommendations in that guide, not universal target values.

Separate a source problem from a TV setting
Compare another channel, app, video, or HDMI input. If only one source looks blurry, its signal or video quality may be the cause. If blur appears with several sources, check each input’s picture settings. LG’s blurry-screen guidance suggests trying Standard picture mode and making sure power saving is off; it also notes that settings may need separate adjustment for each input. For blur during fast motion, test motion processing
If blur is most noticeable in sports or fast action, look for the TV’s motion-processing controls. An LG manual describes TruMotion options including Clear, Smooth, and User, with De-Blur and De-Judder adjustments; availability varies by model. Change one setting at a time and watch for unwanted changes to the motion’s appearance. Motion processing can affect how motion looks, but it cannot restore detail missing from the original video.

When to stop adjusting settings
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider if the TV’s own menu is too dark to read, darkness affects only part of the screen, or blur is present for the first few minutes after startup. Those patterns may point to an internal problem, so repeated picture adjustments are unlikely to be the right next step. For other symptoms, first compare content and inputs, check the relevant connections, and adjust only the settings that match the problem.
