If your Windows 11 touchpad has stopped responding, first check that it is enabled in Settings. If it is enabled—or the problem continues—update its driver through Windows Update, then try updating or reinstalling it in Device Manager. The exact controls and driver listing vary by laptop, so contact its manufacturer if those steps do not help.
1. Check whether Windows has turned off the touchpad
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and make sure the touchpad is enabled. If the pointer works but a gesture does not, check the available options on this page as well. Gesture settings depend on the touchpad hardware; some gestures require a precision touchpad. See Microsoft’s Touch gestures for Windows guidance.

Some laptops also have a keyboard shortcut or manufacturer utility that disables the touchpad. There is no universal function-key combination for all models. If Settings shows the touchpad is enabled but it still will not respond, check your laptop maker’s documentation for model-specific controls.

A missing or outdated driver is one possible reason a touchpad stops working. Microsoft recommends using Windows Update to look for touchpad driver updates. If that does not resolve the problem, Device Manager is another supported route. Microsoft’s Fix touchpad problems in Windows page covers both options.

3. Reinstall the touchpad in Device Manager
If updating the driver does not help—or Windows offers no update—Microsoft says reinstalling the touchpad through Device Manager might help. Follow Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting instructions for the reinstall procedure. Reinstalling prompts Windows to download the latest driver through Windows Update; it does not guarantee the touchpad will start working.
4. Contact the laptop manufacturer if it still fails
If updating or reinstalling the driver does not restore the touchpad, contact the manufacturer of your Windows device. The laptop’s exact make and model determine which drivers, built-in diagnostics, keyboard controls and repair guidance are appropriate. Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting page also directs users to the device maker when these steps do not solve the issue.

Use a mouse temporarily if you need pointer control
If the touchpad is unusable while you troubleshoot, a USB mouse can provide temporary pointer control. It is a workaround, not a repair for the built-in touchpad. For general external mouse and keyboard troubleshooting, see Microsoft’s Mouse and keyboard problems in Windows.
