How to Fix a Ticking Entity Crash on a Forge Minecraft Server

A ticking entity crash is a generic Forge error label. This guide shows how to read the crash report, remove the exact entity or block safely, recover an offline server, and prevent the mod problem from returning.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A “ticking entity” crash is not a diagnosis. It is Forge’s generic label for an exception thrown while an entity is being updated. The newest crash report identifies the actual entity or block entity, its UUID and coordinates, the dimension, and usually the mod whose code failed. Back up the world first, then remove or relocate only the offending object, using progressively more destructive methods if the server cannot stay online.

This procedure applies to Forge servers across different Minecraft generations, but configuration names and file locations vary. Check your exact Minecraft and Forge versions before changing a setting or editing world data.

What “ticking entity” means

Every game tick, Minecraft updates loaded objects. Mobile creatures, dropped items, projectiles, villagers, players, and many modded machines run code during those updates. If that code throws an exception, the server can stop and write a crash report whose headline includes “ticking entity.” Forge forum moderator Choonster explained on February 18, 2017: “Ticking entity is just a generic message used for any crash report that happens when an entity is being ticked.” The phrase identifies the phase of execution, not the culprit.

A ticking block entity is the equivalent failure for a block that stores persistent data and has a ticker. Furnaces, chests, pipes, machines, and other modded devices can execute code every tick. A faulty recipe, capability, neighboring block, or mod update can therefore crash the server whenever the chunk loads.

Do not infer the cause from the headline or from the last mod you installed. Read the report’s object data and stack trace before choosing a fix.

Read the crash report before touching the world

  1. Stop writes and preserve the original. Stop the server cleanly if it is still responsive. Copy the entire world directory and the server configuration to a separate location. Do not work on the only copy; a failed removal or chunk reset may be irreversible.
  2. Open the newest report. In the server’s crash-reports directory, sort by modification time and open the latest file. If the server produced several reports, use the one created by the most recent failed start.
  3. Record the identifying fields. Write down Entity Type, the mod namespace or mod name, the UUID, Pos coordinates, and the dimension. For a block entity, record the block position and block type instead of expecting an entity UUID.
  4. Read the first relevant stack-trace lines. The first lines that name a mod often point to the failing handler. A long Java trace is not, by itself, proof that the mod named in the final line caused the problem; use the entity and position as corroborating evidence.
  5. Check whether the report is about a player, a mobile entity, an item entity, or a block entity. The removal method depends on this classification.

Coordinates are especially important. A crash can be caused by an object that is loaded only when one particular chunk or dimension is opened, so a server may appear healthy until a player approaches that location.

Choose a recovery method by risk

Use the least destructive option that matches the server’s state. The table shows the trade-offs; all methods should be attempted only after making a backup.

Method Can the server stay online? Typical data-loss scope Reversible with a backup? Fixes the mod defect?
Kill the reported entity by UUID Usually yes One entity and its inventory or drops Yes No
Move the affected player away from the location Yes, if another operator can act Player position; the offending object remains Yes No
One-time Forge erroring-object removal Only after a controlled restart The entity or block Forge removes Yes No
Offline NBT or world-editor removal No Selected entity or block data Yes No
Reset the affected chunk or region No Everything saved in the reset area, including builds, inventories, and mod data Yes No

When the server remains online

Kill a mobile entity by UUID

If the server stays up and the report supplies an entity UUID, an operator can target that object from the server console or in-game with operator permission. Use the UUID shown in the report, not a name guessed from the entity type:

/kill <entity-UUID>

Some Minecraft and Forge generations handle command targets differently. If the command is rejected, use the equivalent entity-targeting syntax documented for that exact version, or remove the object with an offline editor. Confirm in the console that one target was affected, then restart and load the original coordinates to verify that the crash no longer occurs.

Move a player who crashes during login

A player can be the reported ticking entity, or can be unable to join because the crash occurs while the game loads the chunk around that player. Have another operator or trusted player load the world and move the affected player to a safe location with the version-appropriate teleport command. If the player can be killed safely, an operator can instead remove that player and let them rejoin at a spawn or other safe position. This does not repair a bad machine or block; it only prevents the problematic chunk from being loaded during login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove a nearby object while another operator loads the chunk

For a crash tied to a machine, pipe, item, or creature, keep the affected player out of the chunk while another operator approaches the recorded coordinates. Break or remove the named block, pick up or kill the entity, and then restart the affected player’s client. Do not dismantle unrelated blocks first: the coordinates and block type in the report are the evidence for what to remove.

Using Forge’s emergency removal settings

Older Forge configurations may expose removeErroringEntities and removeErroringTileEntities. The first applies to mobile entities and the second to ticking block entities (historically called tile entities). Set only the relevant option to true, boot the server once, confirm that the offending object was removed, stop the server, and return the option to false.

Modern Forge uses TOML configuration. Depending on the Minecraft and Forge generation and the configuration type, server settings can be in the server folder or in a world’s serverconfig directory. A legacy guide that tells you to edit forge.cfg may not match your installation. Search the configuration files for the exact option names and make a dated copy before editing.

This is a destructive recovery switch, not a performance setting. It can delete the bad entity or block and may remove data that would have been useful for diagnosis. Leaving it enabled can cause later errors to disappear by silently deleting additional objects. Use it for one controlled boot only, then disable it.

When the server cannot stay up

Offline NBT or world editing

  1. Stop the server and verify that no Java process still has the world open.
  2. Make a second copy of the world backup. Keep one untouched and use the other for editing.
  3. Open the copy in an NBT or world editor that supports your Minecraft version. Locate the dimension, chunk, and entity or block position recorded in the crash report.
  4. Delete only the identified entity entry, or remove the block entity and repair the corresponding block data. Preserve all other entities, inventories, and chunk metadata.
  5. Save the edited copy under a new name, start a test server with the same Forge and mod versions, and load the affected area.
  6. If the test world starts normally, replace the live world only after stopping the server and retaining the original backup. Record exactly what was changed.

Editors differ in how they display dimensions and UUIDs. Verify the coordinates in-game after the test boot; an incorrect dimension or sign error can remove the wrong object.

Reset only the affected chunk as a last resort

If the report points to corrupted chunk data and the object cannot be removed cleanly, a region or chunk selector can reset that area. Resetting is much broader than killing one entity: it can erase player-built structures, inventories, containers, and mod-specific data saved in the chunk. Export or rebuild anything valuable first, and test the reset on a copy. Never reset an entire region when the report identifies a single chunk unless you have confirmed that the wider region is damaged.

Fix the underlying mod or data problem

Removing the object restores access to the world but does not correct the code or data that made it fail. Once the server loads, identify the responsible mod from the namespace and stack trace. Check that mod’s issue tracker and release notes for a version-specific fix. In a copy of the world, test one change at a time:

  • Update the mod to a release compatible with your Minecraft and Forge versions.
  • Roll back the mod if the crash began immediately after an update.
  • Change the mod’s configuration if its documentation identifies a faulty recipe, machine, integration, or feature.
  • Replace the offending machine or block with a known-good version after confirming that its saved data is safe to remove.
  • Keep the same Forge and mod set while testing so that a second change does not hide the cause.

Do not simply delete a mod from the live server. Its blocks, entities, capabilities, or saved references may remain in the world, and removing the mod can create missing-data problems or additional crashes. Make a tested migration plan and retain a backup before changing the mod list.

Special cases and troubleshooting branches

The report names a ticking block entity

Use the block coordinates and dimension, not an entity UUID. If the server can stay online, have an operator reach the location and break the named block. If loading the chunk always crashes, use one-time block-entity removal or offline NBT editing. Removing a nearby mobile entity will not repair a faulty machine ticker.

The report names an item entity

Dropped items can be created by a broken recipe, pipe, or interaction. Kill the reported item entity if possible, then inspect the block or machine that produced it. If identical items immediately recreate the crash, the producer is the underlying problem and must be disabled, updated, or removed in a test copy.

The crash happens only when one player joins

Treat the player’s position as the loading trigger, not necessarily the cause. Move or remove the player with another operator, then investigate the entity or block at the recorded coordinates. If the player’s own saved data is damaged, preserve a backup before editing that player’s data and test the result separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server crashes again after removal

Compare the new report with the old one. A different UUID or coordinate can indicate multiple faulty objects; the emergency setting may have removed one and exposed another. If the same object returns, the mod may be recreating it from saved data or a neighboring machine may be producing it repeatedly. Stop using the live world for experiments and reproduce the sequence in a copy.

Profile the server before the next outage

If the server is lagging before it crashes, Forge’s built-in debug profiler can show which entities or block entities consume tick time. Press F3 + L while connected as an operator or administrator. The profiler captures 10 seconds and writes a zip file in debug/profiling. Its output includes entity and block-entity sections. Use the profile to identify a growing or unusually expensive object, then correlate its location with crash reports. Profiling does not repair a crash; it provides evidence before you remove anything.

Prevent a repeat crash

  • Keep rotating backups of the complete world and server configuration, and periodically verify that a backup can actually be restored.
  • Retain crash reports instead of deleting them after a restart. Record the UUID, dimension, coordinates, mod version, and action taken for each incident.
  • Pin Forge and mod versions that are known to work together. Test updates on a copy before applying them to the live server.
  • After changing a configuration or mod, load previously problematic dimensions and chunks deliberately rather than waiting for a player to discover the failure.
  • Use one-time removal settings only for recovery and return them to false immediately.
  • When profiling shows rising tick cost, remove or repair the responsible machine or entity before the server reaches a hard crash.

A safe decision checklist

  1. Back up the world and configuration.
  2. Read the newest crash report and record the entity or block, UUID, coordinates, dimension, and mod namespace.
  3. Classify it as a mobile entity, player, item entity, or ticking block entity.
  4. If the server is online, kill or relocate only the identified object.
  5. If it cannot remain online, use a one-time Forge removal setting or edit a copy offline.
  6. Reset a chunk only when narrower removal fails and the wider data loss is acceptable.
  7. Test the world with a compatible mod update, rollback, configuration change, or replacement.
  8. Restore normal settings, keep the backup, and document the incident.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I leave the Forge removal option enabled to prevent future crashes?

No. It is intended for one controlled recovery boot. Leaving it enabled can silently delete other erroring entities or block entities and conceal the underlying defect.

Will killing the reported entity fix the mod that caused the crash?

No. It removes the immediate trigger. The responsible mod or saved data still needs to be updated, rolled back, reconfigured, or replaced in a tested copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is resetting the whole region safer than deleting one chunk?

No. A region reset affects substantially more saved data. Use the smallest confirmed area and expect builds, inventories, and mod data in that area to be lost.

Why does an old guide mention forge.cfg when my server has TOML files?

Forge’s configuration format and locations changed between generations. Modern installations commonly use TOML and may store server settings in the server folder or a world’s serverconfig directory; follow the paths for your exact version.
