If your smartwatch face will not change or load, first try selecting a face already saved on the watch. If that works, the problem is likely limited to the missing, hidden, incompatible, or downloaded face—not the watch’s entire face selector. The steps differ for Apple Watch, Wear OS, and Samsung Galaxy Watch, so use the section for your platform.
Start by identifying what is failing
Try switching to another face already in the watch’s collection. If it appears, focus on the particular face that will not load. If no face selection works, use the watch’s own face list and its official companion app to check whether the target face is actually available.

- The face is in the companion app but not on the watch: it may be hidden or need to be added to the watch.
- Only one downloaded face causes trouble: switch away from it and remove it, then try a different face.
- The face is missing from the store or will not transfer: check whether it is compatible with the watch, especially after setup or restoring a backup.
- The face appears but information is missing: check complication-data permissions and whether the watch is displaying a simplified glance view.
Fix face selection on Apple Watch
Switch to a face already saved
Touch and hold the current face, swipe through the saved faces, then tap the one you want. If the face is not in the watch’s list or the iPhone’s My Faces, add it before trying to select it.

- From iPhone: Open the Watch app, tap Face Gallery, choose and customize a face, then tap Add to Watch.
- From Apple Watch: Touch and hold the current face, swipe left to the end of the list, tap Add, browse the available faces, and add one.
Apple also documents an optional swipe-to-switch setting under Settings > Clock. See Apple’s instructions for changing the watch face.

Fix face selection on Wear OS
Select a face and check hidden faces
Wake the watch, touch and hold the screen, swipe through the available faces, and tap the one you want. Some watches require a left swipe to reach the face list. You can also use the Wear OS app or the watch maker’s companion app. If a face appears in the app but not on the watch, review the watch’s face list for hidden faces and unhide or re-add the face as applicable. Google explains these options in its Wear OS watch-face instructions.
Remove a face that will not load
If the problem began after installing one store-downloaded face, remove that face’s app and try another. Google’s guidance for removing a downloaded face is to remove its app.

Check missing complication data
If the face itself displays but its information does not, open Settings > Apps > Permissions, select the watch face, and check Receive complication data. Menu names can differ by device. A complication is a piece of information shown on a face, such as a calendar item or other app data; a permission issue can leave that information unavailable even when the face loads.
Check compatibility after setup or a restore
Some older faces may no longer be available or compatible, including when setting up a new watch or restoring a backup. Choose a face that Google Play identifies as compatible with your watch. Google’s guidance on unavailable or incompatible Wear OS faces covers this limitation.

Fix a downloaded face on Samsung Galaxy Watch
If a downloaded face appears to trigger the issue, note when it starts. Samsung advises changing or uninstalling the face if the problem begins after the startup screen fades; developer-guideline issues can affect downloaded faces. Use the right companion app for the model
Samsung says Galaxy Watch models using Wear OS, including Galaxy Watch4 and later, use a compatible Android phone and the Galaxy Wearable app for setup and management. That guidance is from Samsung Canada, and available screens or settings can vary by country; consult Samsung Canada’s Galaxy Watch guide for the supported setup context.
