SSH slowness has three different signatures: a long wait before authentication, delayed typing after login, or commands that run slowly on the VPS. Measure which one you have first, then test DNS and address families for connection setup, the network path for interactive lag, and CPU, memory, swap, and storage for slow commands. Use Mosh for a lossy interactive connection and tmux or screen so a disconnect does not destroy work.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Start by identifying the kind of slowness
Do not change SSH, firewall, or authentication settings until you know where the delay occurs. A connection can be quick to establish while the shell is unusable, or it can feel fine interactively while the workload on the VPS is starved of CPU or storage.

These categories can overlap. A busy VPS can delay shell startup, while packet loss can make a healthy command look frozen. Keep separate notes for connection setup, interactive response, and command execution so one fix does not hide another problem.
Establish a baseline before changing anything
Time a command that does no useful work
From the client, run:
time ssh user@host true
The command logs in, runs true, and exits without starting an interactive shell. Repeat it several times. Record real time, whether the hostname or an IP was used, and whether the delay occurs before authentication, during authentication, or after the prompt should have appeared. A one-off slow run may be a transient route or provider event; a repeatable delay points to configuration, name resolution, or a consistently unhealthy path.

Compare hostname, address families, and network locations
Run the same timed command against the hostname and the server’s known IP address. If the IP is fast but the hostname is slow, investigate forward and reverse DNS rather than SSH encryption. If IPv6 is selected and performs poorly, compare explicit IPv4 and IPv6 attempts. On an OpenSSH client, these diagnostics are commonly expressed with:
ssh -4 user@host true
ssh -6 user@host true
Use the result as evidence, not as a permanent workaround by itself. A failed IPv6 test can mean the route is unavailable; it does not prove that IPv6 is wrong for every network.

Measure the path while the problem is happening
Capture round-trip time and packet loss from the client to the VPS, and, where possible, from the VPS back toward the client or another controlled endpoint. A normal-looking average can hide intermittent loss that makes every keystroke wait for retransmission. Compare a wired connection, a different access network, or a different VPN path only as controlled tests; record which change altered the result.
On the VPS, note the time of each reproduction and inspect the provider’s network and instance graphs. This lets you distinguish a route problem from a guest that was CPU-starved at the same moment.
Fix a long delay before authentication
Test forward and reverse DNS
The OpenSSH FAQ says that large delays, particularly those exceeding 10 seconds, are typically caused by a name-resolution problem. SSH may perform lookups involving the client address, server name, or both. Check that the hostname resolves promptly to the expected address and that the server’s address has a sensible reverse-DNS result. Test from the client and inspect the VPS resolver configuration; a resolver timeout can look exactly like a frozen SSH client.
Use a direct IP connection as a diagnostic. If that removes the delay, fix the DNS record, resolver reachability, or reverse-DNS configuration rather than weakening unrelated SSH controls. If both hostname and IP are slow, continue with address-family, service, and authentication checks.

Use address-family and server lookup settings as targeted tests
The OpenSSH documentation identifies AddressFamily inet as an IPv4 diagnostic or workaround when IPv6 or mixed-family resolution is responsible. Set it for one host in the client configuration or test an equivalent IPv4-only connection, then compare timings. Do not apply a global setting until you know which hosts need it.
On affected server configurations, UseDNS no disables most server-side lookups. Treat this as a narrowly scoped test: edit the SSH server configuration, validate the syntax, reload the service using your distribution’s documented procedure, and check the SSH logs for the next connection. Disabling lookups does not repair broken DNS, and it should not be used as a substitute for understanding why name resolution failed. Never combine this experiment with changes to authentication or firewall rules, because you would lose the ability to identify the cause.
Inspect service and authentication delays
Review the SSH service logs on the VPS at the exact time of a slow attempt. Look for pauses during key exchange, account lookup, public-key verification, multi-factor or directory authentication, and shell startup. If the SSH daemon accepts the connection quickly but the prompt appears late, inspect the shell’s startup files and commands that contact remote services; that is a post-authentication startup issue, not a network handshake issue.
Authentication systems backed by a directory, identity provider, or external name service can add their own timeout. Test with a local account where policy permits and compare the timestamps. Preserve the security policy while isolating the slow backend; do not turn off authentication methods merely to make a timing test pass.

Understand why ordinary SSH feels delayed
The official Mosh documentation explains that SSH waits for the server’s reply before showing your own typing. On a high-latency or lossy path, each keystroke and screen update can therefore feel behind your hands even when the VPS is idle. Packet loss, retransmissions, Wi-Fi interference, a congested VPN, or an overloaded endpoint can produce the same sensation.
Check whether a simple local shell prompt responds slowly while a command running entirely on the VPS is otherwise fast. Then compare an idle session, a command that produces frequent output, and a full-screen program. This separates interactive echo delay from slow application output.

Try Mosh when UDP is available
Mosh is designed for immediate local echo, tolerance of packet loss, and roaming between changing networks. It authenticates through SSH, starts mosh-server on the VPS, and then carries the session over UDP. Both ends therefore need a working Mosh installation, and the required UDP path must be open.
- Confirm that the Mosh client is installed on your computer and that the
mosh-serverbinary is installed for the account on the VPS. - Verify that SSH login succeeds normally; Mosh uses SSH for startup and authentication.
- Allow the UDP port range required by your Mosh installation in the VPS firewall, cloud firewall, and any intervening network policy. Restrict the range and source addresses where your environment allows it.
- Start a session with the Mosh command for your host and watch whether local typing becomes immediate while you reproduce the same workload.
- If startup hangs, test the remote shell and the Mosh server launch separately. Mosh’s debugging guidance treats a failure to exchange client and server packets as a network problem, while a hang during startup can originate in the shell or the server launch itself.
Mosh does not make a CPU-bound command faster, and it is not a replacement for SSH’s transport in every security or network policy. If UDP is blocked, continue using SSH and improve the route, reduce packet loss, or move the client closer to the VPS.
Improve the route instead of masking it
When measurements show persistent latency or loss, test a nearer VPS region, a wired connection, or a different VPN path if those choices are available to you. Compare results at the same time of day and under the same workload. A route that is poor only from one access network should be escalated to that network or bypassed; a route that is poor from several independent networks may require the VPS provider to investigate upstream connectivity.
Make sessions survive disconnects with tmux or screen
A terminal multiplexer keeps a shell and its processes running independently of the SSH transport. Ubuntu’s OpenSSH documentation recommends tmux or screen so you can reconnect and reattach after a network interruption.
A minimal tmux workflow
- Connect to the VPS and create a named session:
tmux new -s work. - Start the long-running command inside that session.
- Detach without stopping the command by pressing
Ctrl-b, thend. - Exit SSH if necessary. The process continues inside tmux on the VPS.
- Reconnect and run
tmux attach -t workto return to the same shell and scrollback.
Use a descriptive session name for each project. Before starting a destructive or production task, confirm that the command is actually inside tmux; launching it in the outer shell leaves it vulnerable to the next disconnect.
Using screen instead
screen provides the same essential durability pattern: create a session, detach it, reconnect, and reattach. The exact key bindings differ, so keep the client for your installed version nearby. A multiplexer protects work from transport loss, but it cannot prevent the VPS from rebooting, running out of memory, or terminating the process for another reason.

Speed up repeated connections with SSH connection reuse
For repeated connections to one host, OpenSSH connection sharing can avoid repeating some setup work. The client options are ControlMaster and ControlPersist. A typical per-host configuration enables a master connection and keeps it available for a defined period; later sessions reuse that connection.
Configure and test this for one host at a time. Use a secure, user-only directory for the control socket, ensure its permissions do not expose the socket to other users, and choose a persistence interval appropriate to the machine’s security policy. Reuse reduces repeated connection setup; it does not lower the round-trip time of an already-open interactive session and does not repair DNS, packet loss, or a slow command.

Verify the TERM value
The tmux FAQ identifies an incorrect TERM value as a common cause of display problems. Check the value outside and inside tmux:
echo $TERM
tmux new -s check
echo $TERM
The outer terminal and multiplexer must advertise capabilities the remote terminfo database understands. Compatible values can include tmux-256color or screen-256color, depending on what is installed on the VPS. If a full-screen editor shows broken colors, misplaced characters, or an unusable cursor, correct the terminal definition rather than changing network settings.
Disable expensive automatic window renaming when necessary
The tmux FAQ warns that automatic window renaming can consume substantial CPU on slow computers. If tmux itself causes visible overhead, disable that feature inside the tmux configuration or for the current session with:
setw -g automatic-rename off
Recheck CPU use while reproducing the lag. This setting addresses local tmux work, not packet loss or a saturated VPS.
Best Value
Find resource pressure on the VPS
CPU and runnable processes
Run uptime to see load averages, then inspect processes with top or htop. A high load average with one or more processes consuming CPU can delay shell startup, command execution, and screen updates. Identify the workload before stopping anything: a backup, compiler, database maintenance task, or runaway process may be responsible. Reduce its concurrency, reschedule it, or move it to a healthier instance according to your operational policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Memory and swap
Use free -h while the issue is active. Low available memory and sustained swap activity can make every command sluggish even when CPU usage looks modest. Use vmstat 1 to observe memory pressure and I/O wait over several samples rather than relying on one snapshot. Reduce the workload, increase available memory, or resize the VPS only after confirming that memory pressure correlates with the lag.
Storage latency and I/O wait
iostat can reveal a busy device and high wait time. Correlate those readings with the command that feels slow and with provider storage graphs. A full or throttled volume, a burstable disk limit, or many competing processes can delay shell history, package operations, and application output. Free space, reduce concurrent I/O, or move the workload to storage with sufficient performance; do not claim that changing SSH options will solve a storage bottleneck.
Network and instance health
Check the provider’s instance status, network connectivity, and CPU-health indicators while reproducing the problem. Google Compute Engine’s SSH troubleshooting workflow explicitly includes network connectivity and VM instance status checks, including CPU health. The same categories apply conceptually to other VPS platforms, although their dashboard labels differ. If the guest is healthy but only one route is poor, focus on network placement and path selection rather than resizing the instance.
Use logs and a controlled decision path
Follow this order so each observation narrows the cause:
- Run
time ssh user@host trueseveral times and write down where the delay appears. - Compare hostname with IP, then compare IPv4 and IPv6. A hostname-only delay sends you to DNS and reverse DNS; a family-specific delay sends you to routing or address-family configuration.
- Inspect the SSH service logs and authentication backend timing for a slow pre-authentication or post-authentication startup.
- If login is fast but typing lags, measure round-trip time and packet loss from the client and inspect the VPS network path. Test Mosh only after confirming SSH startup,
mosh-server, and UDP reachability. - If only commands are slow, correlate the reproduction with CPU, memory, swap, I/O wait, process contention, and application logs.
- If disconnects are the main risk, run the work in tmux or screen and reattach after reconnecting.
- If characters or colors are wrong, verify
TERMand disable tmux automatic renaming if it consumes noticeable CPU.
Change one variable at a time and keep the before-and-after timing. That practice prevents a DNS adjustment, a firewall change, and a workload reschedule from becoming one unrepeatable experiment.
When to escalate or change capacity
Escalate to the VPS provider when the guest remains healthy but packet loss or latency is visible from multiple independent client networks, when the instance reports host or CPU-health problems, or when storage and network graphs show provider-side throttling. Include timestamps, source and destination regions, timed SSH results, and relevant service-log excerpts without exposing credentials.
Change capacity or move the workload when measurements show sustained CPU saturation, memory exhaustion, swap pressure, or storage wait that your workload cannot avoid. A larger or nearer instance can be the correct fix, but only after the resource or route bottleneck is demonstrated. There is no universal acceptable-lag number: interactive comfort depends on latency, loss, terminal workload, and the user’s network, so use your own baseline and reproducible comparison.
What not to infer from old SSH timings
The OpenSSH FAQ includes an illustrative localhost figure of 0.22 seconds for SSHv2 on an otherwise unloaded 2.1 GHz Athlon XP 2600+ system. That historical example is neither a modern VPS target nor a performance guarantee. It cannot establish what your Internet path, region, encryption policy, or provider should deliver. Use current measurements from your own client and VPS instead.
