First check whether the mouse pointer also moves slowly outside Excel. If it does, investigate the mouse or computer; if the delay happens only in Excel, check whether it affects every workbook or just one. “Slow cursor” can mean pointer movement, cell selection, scrolling, typing, or screen redraw, and the right fix depends on which is delayed.
Identify what is slow—and where
Move the pointer outside Excel, then try the same kind of movement inside it. Also open another workbook and note which action triggers the delay. This separates a system-wide pointer problem from an Excel-specific or workbook-specific one.

- Pointer is slow outside Excel too: check the mouse, its connection or batteries, and whether other apps respond slowly. A mouse replacement is worth considering only if device-level checks point to the mouse.
- Only Excel is slow in every workbook: test Excel’s startup components and add-ins, then consider display-related troubleshooting if the symptom fits.
- Only one workbook is slow: investigate that file’s contents and, if you use Microsoft 365, its unused-cell formatting.
Record your Excel edition and version, Windows or macOS version, display setup, and whether the delay affects selection, scrolling, editing, or redraw. The steps below for Safe Mode and add-ins are for Windows; they are not universal Mac instructions.
Test Excel without add-ins in Windows
Excel Safe Mode bypasses some functionality and settings, including Excel add-ins and most COM add-ins. If the lag improves in Safe Mode, an add-in or startup component may be involved; the test narrows the possibilities but does not identify the cause by itself. Microsoft’s Windows procedure is to run Excel /safe. See Microsoft’s instructions for opening Office apps in Safe Mode.

If Safe Mode changes the behavior, test COM add-ins:
- In Excel, select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and select Go.
- Clear the selected add-ins and restart Excel normally.
- If the lag is gone, return to the same list, enable one add-in, and restart Excel. Repeat one at a time to see whether the issue returns.
Microsoft notes that add-ins can occasionally interfere with Excel. Avoid registry edits as a general troubleshooting step: Microsoft warns that changing the registry can cause serious problems. See Microsoft’s Excel troubleshooting guidance.

Try graphics settings only when the display symptom fits
If Excel’s screen redraw is sluggish, especially on a system without a dedicated GPU or with an older graphics card or driver, Microsoft lists disabling hardware graphics acceleration as a targeted test. The setting’s location and availability vary by Office version, so use the instructions for your edition rather than assuming every Excel build exposes the same control.
If the slowdown appears while using multiple high-resolution monitors, Microsoft also lists setting Office compatibility mode to Optimize for compatibility for systems using per-monitor dynamic high-definition awareness. This is a specific multi-monitor workaround, not a general fix for every slow pointer or delayed selection. Consult Microsoft’s Excel performance tips for the relevant version and setting.

Check a slow workbook in Microsoft 365
If the problem is confined to one file, Microsoft 365’s Check Performance feature can find cells that have formatting, blanks, or non-printing characters despite containing no data. A large number of such cells can make a workbook slow or unresponsive.
- Make a copy of an important workbook before cleanup.
- Open the workbook and select Review > Check Performance.
- Inspect the cells Excel identifies, then choose Optimize all or Optimize sheet as appropriate.
- Test the workbook again after optimization.

Check other causes and current Excel issues
Microsoft also identifies antivirus software integration as a possible source of Excel performance problems. Do not turn off security protection wholesale. If you suspect an interaction, consult the security software vendor for configuration guidance.

If the steps above do not help, check Microsoft’s recent Excel for Windows issues page for your current version. It lists fixes, workarounds, and investigations; a workaround can change status as Excel updates, so verify that it still applies before using it.
