How to Fix a Shortcode Showing as Text in WordPress

Literal shortcode brackets usually mean WordPress cannot find a registered handler or the content path never parses shortcodes. Follow this context-by-context troubleshooting guide.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If WordPress displays [your_shortcode] instead of the form, gallery, button, or other output you expected, it is not finding a usable shortcode handler in that rendering path. Check the exact tag, confirm that the plugin or theme code that registers it is active, remove accidental escaping, and place it in a context that processes shortcodes. Post content and the Gutenberg Shortcode block usually use WordPress’s shortcode pipeline; widgets, custom fields, templates, excerpts, menus, and custom output often need a block, widget setting, or explicit code that parses the value.

What it means when a shortcode appears as text

A shortcode is a small macro such as or [contact_form id='42']. WordPress does not render the brackets by themselves. A plugin, theme, or custom plugin must register the tag with a callback. When a supported content path is rendered, the Shortcode API looks for that exact registration key, parses any attributes and enclosed content, calls the handler, and inserts the handler’s returned string where the shortcode appeared.

That explains the symptom: visible brackets mean either no matching handler was available or the value never passed through a shortcode parser. If the provider plugin is missing or deactivated, WordPress treats the complete shortcode, its attributes, and its enclosed content as ordinary text and preserves the special characters in the HTML. A typo, an unsupported character, a wrong closing tag, or an extra space can have the same visible result because shortcode names are exact registration keys.

There is also an intentional way to show a shortcode without executing it. WordPress uses double brackets, for example [gallery], to escape a registered shortcode. That is useful in documentation, tutorials, and code examples, but it produces literal text by design.

Use this diagnostic order

Work through these checks in order. Each one eliminates a different failure mode, so you can stop as soon as the shortcode renders.

  1. Copy the tag from the provider’s current documentation. Compare every character, including underscores, hyphens, numbers, spaces, the opening and closing brackets, and the closing form for enclosing shortcodes. Registration is exact: a handler registered for my_form will not run for my-form or my_form .
  2. Identify what supplies the shortcode. Look at the plugin’s documentation, the theme’s features, or the custom code that originally created the tag. Do not assume that a shortcode is a built-in WordPress feature; most are registered by a plugin or theme.
  3. Check that provider in the dashboard. Open Plugins and confirm that the supplying plugin is installed and active. A deleted, renamed, replaced, or deactivated plugin leaves its old shortcode as text. If the tag came from a theme or child theme, make sure the active theme still contains the registration.
  4. Look for accidental escaping. Replace [[tag]] with [tag] when you want execution. Keep the double brackets only when your goal is to teach or display the syntax.
  5. Confirm the editor block. In the block editor, insert the dedicated Shortcode block. It is listed in the Widgets category, and typing /shortcode in the editor and pressing Enter inserts it. A Code block or Preformatted block is intended to display code, so it will preserve brackets rather than execute them.
  6. Check the output location. A shortcode in normal post or page content follows WordPress’s usual content pipeline. A value in a widget, template, excerpt, navigation item, custom field, or a custom theme component may be stored and printed without shortcode processing.
  7. Inspect custom code. If you own the shortcode, verify that it is registered on every request where it is needed, that its callback returns a string, and that attributes and generated HTML are sanitized and escaped appropriately.
  8. Isolate conflicts and stale output. On a staging copy, test with the provider plugin active, a default theme, and other plugins temporarily disabled. If the shortcode then works, restore components one at a time to locate a conflict. Clear page, object, CDN, and browser caches after a change; caching is a practical source of stale output, although there is no single cache-clearing sequence that applies to every site.

Fix the common editor and context problems

Gutenberg posts and pages

For a block-editor page, add a Shortcode block rather than a Code or Preformatted block. Select the inserter, search for Shortcode under Widgets, and paste the single-bracket tag into that block. You can also type /shortcode and press Enter. Preview or update the page, then view the front end. If the brackets still appear, return to the provider and registration checks: the block supplies an appropriate content location, but it cannot create a handler that is not registered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a shortcode is placed in a paragraph block, it may still work because the block’s content can enter the normal content filters, but the dedicated block makes your intent clear and avoids a code-display block that is designed to preserve literal characters.

Classic editor content

In the classic editor, enter the shortcode in the Visual or Text editor as ordinary post content, using the exact syntax supplied by the plugin. Do not wrap it in code markup unless you intentionally want visitors to see the syntax. If it works in one post but not another, compare the actual characters and surrounding markup; a copied shortcode can acquire a space, typographic quote, or an extra bracket.

Classic widgets

A text widget or HTML widget does not automatically guarantee shortcode execution. Use a widget or block that documents shortcode support, or enable the relevant shortcode-processing option supplied by your site’s configuration. If the widget outputs the value literally, the widget’s render path is not passing it through the parser, even though the same tag works in a post.

Block themes and the Site Editor

Block themes use the Site Editor, patterns, and template parts instead of the old Appearance > Widgets screen. Open the Site Editor, edit the template or template part that contains the intended location, and insert a Shortcode block there. A shortcode pasted into a text-oriented block can remain text, and a custom template may print a value without applying the shortcode filter. The key question is not whether the brackets are present in the editor; it is whether the final block or template path invokes shortcode processing.

Menus, excerpts, and other fields

Navigation labels, excerpts, titles, and many custom fields are data fields rather than post-content fields. WordPress will not generally interpret every stored string as a shortcode. If you need dynamic output in one of these locations, first check whether that field or the theme component explicitly supports shortcodes. If it does not, a developer must change the rendering code or use a supported block or widget instead.

Custom fields require an explicit rendering step

Custom fields are metadata. Storing [mytag] in a custom-field value does not, by itself, execute anything on the front end. The theme or plugin must retrieve the metadata and decide how to render it. WordPress documents do_shortcode() as the parser for known shortcodes, while normal post content receives shortcode processing through the content pipeline.

A developer who intentionally wants a custom-field value to execute can pass the value through the parser before output:

$value = get_post_meta( get_the_ID(), 'promo_text', true );
echo do_shortcode( $value );

The exact retrieval and output code depends on the field implementation. Treat this as a design decision, not a universal patch: only process content that the site trusts, validate expected attributes, and escape ordinary output according to its destination. If the field is meant to display user-entered text, parsing it as executable shortcode may be unsafe or simply the wrong behavior.

Repair a shortcode you registered yourself

Register the exact tag

A minimal registration associates a tag with a callback:

add_shortcode( 'mytag', 'mytag_callback' );

The first argument is the name users must type between the brackets. Register it from a plugin or the active theme code on every request in which the shortcode can appear. A shortcode implemented only in a previous theme disappears when that theme is changed; putting site functionality in a maintained plugin makes it portable across theme changes.

Return the replacement string

The callback’s return value is inserted into the content in place of the shortcode. It should return markup or text, not echo it directly:

function mytag_callback( $atts, $content = null ) {
    $atts = shortcode_atts(
        array( 'label' => 'Read more' ),
        $atts,
        'mytag'
    );

    $label = esc_html( $atts['label'] );
    return '<a class="mytag-link" href="/details">' . $label . '</a>';
}

Echoing from a shortcode callback can send output before or outside the location where WordPress is assembling the page, producing misplaced markup or other side effects. The Plugin Handbook summarizes this rule as “Always return!” because shortcodes behave like filters: their replacement text belongs in the returned value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sanitize inputs and escape outputs

Shortcode attributes and enclosed content can come from editors or other stored data. Normalize attributes with the expected defaults, validate values against the formats your callback accepts, sanitize data before using it, and escape it for its output context. Text, URLs, HTML attributes, and allowed markup each require an appropriate escaping strategy. Do not concatenate untrusted attributes into HTML or SQL merely because the shortcode is available only to editors.

Check duplicate registrations

Two components can register the same tag. The later registration can overwrite the earlier one, so a shortcode may appear to be registered while a different callback is actually handling it. Search active plugins and the theme for the tag name and temporarily disable competing implementations on staging. Keep one documented owner for each shortcode name.

Compare the likely repair paths

Where the shortcode is defined or placed What normally parses it Most useful repair Portability and risk
Maintained plugin, post or page content Normal content pipeline or Shortcode block Activate the provider and use the exact tag Portable across theme changes; still depends on the plugin remaining installed
Active theme or child theme Only paths that invoke shortcode processing Restore the registration or move site functionality into a plugin Tied to the active theme; theme replacement can remove the handler
Classic text widget Depends on the widget implementation and settings Use a shortcode-capable widget/block or change the render path Can vary between classic and block themes
Block-theme template or pattern The selected block or template output Insert a Shortcode block or explicitly process the value Template code may print literal data unless designed otherwise
Custom field, excerpt, menu, or custom template variable Usually no automatic shortcode parsing Use a supported component or have the developer call do_shortcode() Flexible but requires code review, input validation, and output escaping

Recognize the symptom and choose the matching fix

What you see Likely cause Next action
The entire tag, attributes, and enclosed content are visible The provider is missing or inactive, or no handler is registered Identify the provider, activate it, and verify registration
Only a shortcode copied from documentation fails Typo, changed syntax, extra space, or wrong closing tag Copy the current documented form character for character
Double brackets remain visible Intentional escaping Use single brackets for execution
It works in a post but not in a Code or Preformatted block The block is designed to show code Move the tag to a Shortcode block or normal content location
It works in a post but not in a widget or template That output path does not apply shortcode processing Use a shortcode-capable component or modify the render path
The callback runs but output is misplaced or missing The callback echoes instead of returning Return the replacement string and remove side-effect output
The correct code is present but old text remains after an update Cached page or object output Clear applicable caches and retest in a private window
The result changes when plugins or themes change Registration conflict or theme-dependent code Use a staging isolation test and identify the component that changes the handler

Use staging to separate registration failures from context failures

When the basic checks do not identify the problem, make a staging copy before disabling production components. Reproduce the page there with the provider plugin active, a default theme, and unrelated plugins temporarily disabled. If the shortcode renders in that minimal setup, re-enable the original theme and plugins one at a time. The first change that brings back literal brackets identifies the conflict or context-dependent code.

If it fails even in the minimal setup, inspect the exact tag and the provider’s registration path. A plugin update may have removed or renamed a shortcode, or the shortcode may be available only after a particular module or integration is enabled. Check the provider’s own documentation for the current registration name rather than assuming an older tag remains supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After fixing the cause, purge the cache layers used by the site and test both an authenticated view and a private browser window. A cached page can continue to show the former literal output even after the shortcode is correctly registered. Do not treat cache clearing as a substitute for registration or context checks; it only removes stale rendered results.

Prevent the problem on future edits

  • Record which plugin or code component owns every custom shortcode and keep that component active when the shortcode is used.
  • Prefer the Gutenberg Shortcode block for block-editor content and avoid Code or Preformatted blocks unless literal syntax is the intended result.
  • Document whether a widget, template, custom field, excerpt, or menu item supports shortcode processing.
  • Keep site functionality in a maintained plugin rather than tying it exclusively to a theme that may later be replaced.
  • Give custom callbacks one unique tag, return their output, validate attributes, sanitize inputs, and escape generated markup.
  • Test theme, plugin, and WordPress updates on staging when a site depends on custom shortcode code.
  • When teaching shortcode syntax, use double brackets deliberately so readers see an example without triggering it.

When the right answer is not to use a shortcode

Shortcodes are useful for compact, editor-entered macros, but they are not automatically the best interface for every dynamic feature. If a block, widget, or template component already provides the required controls and output, use that supported component instead of storing executable syntax in an arbitrary field. This keeps the rendering path explicit and reduces surprises when themes, editors, or plugins change.

For custom development, decide where parsing belongs before saving values. Post content can use the normal content pipeline; a custom field needs an intentional call such as do_shortcode(); and a template can choose to render a block or output a validated value directly. Making that choice explicit prevents a shortcode from silently becoming plain text in one part of the site while working in another.

Final verification checklist

  1. Open the front-end page in a private window and confirm the provider plugin or theme code is active.
  2. Compare the tag with the provider’s documentation, including attributes and closing syntax.
  3. Ensure execution uses single brackets and that the editor element is not Code or Preformatted.
  4. For Gutenberg, test the dedicated Shortcode block; for a block theme, test the relevant Site Editor template or pattern.
  5. For widgets and custom fields, confirm that their render path applies shortcode processing.
  6. For custom code, confirm exact registration, a returning callback, validated attributes, and escaped output.
  7. Run a staging isolation test if the issue depends on a particular theme or plugin combination.
  8. Clear relevant caches only after the underlying registration and rendering path are correct.
