A MacBook screen shadow can come from a mark on the glass, an image or software issue, a pixel anomaly, or a problem inside the display. There is no single setting that fixes them all. First check whether the mark appears in a screenshot, then clean the surface safely and inspect display settings only if the whole screen is dim. A persistent patch that looks internal needs professional evaluation.
First, work out whether the shadow is in the image or the display
When the mark is visible, take a screenshot and view it on another display, or move the screenshot around on the Mac desktop. If the mark moves with the captured image or appears when that image is viewed elsewhere, an image or software cause is more likely. If it is absent from the screenshot, a built-in display issue becomes more likely. If possible, compare the MacBook’s built-in screen with an external display. A mark visible only on the built-in screen points toward that display, but neither comparison identifies a failed part. If the results are unclear or the mark persists, continue with the safe checks below and arrange an inspection if it appears internal.

A tiny, fixed dark point
A single pinpoint that stays in the same place may be a pixel or subpixel anomaly. Apple explains that a transistor can leave a subpixel off (dark) or on (bright), but a dark point is not automatically a dead pixel; foreign material can also look like a pixel problem. Apple recommends having concerning pixel anomalies examined at an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider. An irregular stain or patch
Check whether the mark is on the front glass before assuming it is inside the panel. If the glass is clean but a stain-like appearance remains, it could be a coating blemish on some older MacBook models. iFixit documents anti-reflective coating delamination as one possible cause; that does not establish the cause on your particular MacBook: iFixit’s anti-reflective coating guide.
A dark band or uneven light near the bottom edge
If the illumination changes when you move the lid, stop flexing it to reproduce the symptom and have the Mac inspected. Historical reports linked similar “stage light” symptoms on some older MacBook Pro models to possible display-cable faults. That history does not show that every lower-edge shadow is the same issue, or that newer models share it: MacRumors’ 2019 report.

The entire screen becomes dimmer
A broad reduction in brightness is different from a fixed localized patch. On MacBook Pro models with Liquid Retina XDR, Apple documents a brightness limit that can appear after sustained bright content in a warm environment; it is accompanied by Apple’s warning indicator. This condition does not explain every screen shadow. Clean only the screen surface
- Shut down your MacBook and unplug its power adapter.
- Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to wipe the screen.
- Do not spray liquid directly onto the display. Avoid window or household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, and hydrogen peroxide cleaners.
Apple’s cleaning guidance is for surface cleaning; it cannot remove a defect or debris trapped inside the display: Apple: How to clean your Apple products. Apple says foreign material on the front glass can be wiped away, while material trapped within the screen requires service by an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store: Apple: About LCD display pixel anomalies for Apple products.

Check settings if the whole display is dim
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and inspect brightness, resolution, and refresh rate. The available controls vary by Mac model and connected display. These checks may help with general dimness or an unsuitable display setting; changing resolution is not an ordinary fix for a fixed patch: Apple: Change your Mac display’s resolution.
Let an XDR brightness limit recover
If you have a MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR and see Apple’s brightness-limit warning, follow Apple’s steps for that specific condition:

- Close resource-heavy apps and HDR windows.
- Lower the room temperature if the environment is warm.
- Use the Apple XDR reference mode unless another workflow requires a different mode.
- Let the Mac sleep for 5–10 minutes.
Apple says service may be needed if the limit persists in a room below 25°C (77°F). These steps address a broad XDR brightness limit, not a localized dark patch: Apple: If your XDR display shows a warning icon.
When to arrange service
Contact Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider if the mark seems trapped inside the display, persists after surface cleaning, or appears alongside uneven illumination that changes with lid position. Ask for an evaluation rather than assuming a particular part has failed. Before agreeing to a repair, confirm that the provider can service your exact MacBook model and ask about the evaluation charge, proposed repair, parts, and warranty terms.
