If a screenshot API returns an incomplete page, change its readiness condition to wait for the content you need—not just for navigation to reach a milestone. Prefer a content-specific selector or an application-owned ready marker. Use a short delay only to allow a known transition to settle, and scroll before capture when lazy-loaded content is below the fold.
Why the screenshot can be early
Browser navigation events describe stages of loading, not necessarily the moment a modern web app has finished rendering useful content. A page can fire its load event while client-side code is still fetching data, mounting a chart, or updating a results panel. ScreenshotAPI and ScreenshotCore both document load as the default wait condition, so a default capture may be too early for these pages.
First identify what is missing from the image—a heading, result list, chart, image, or other visible element. The right wait signal is one that corresponds to that specific content being ready.
Choose a readiness condition that matches the page
Wait for the content with a selector
If the desired element appears when the page is ready, configure the API to wait for its CSS selector. ScreenshotAPI supports waitForSelector; ScreenshotCore supports wait_for_selector and documents a limit of up to 10 seconds. The exact parameter name and timeout behavior are provider-specific, so use the relevant API reference rather than copying settings between services.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a selector that signals the content you actually need. A generic container that exists before its data arrives may not be a sufficient readiness signal. If the selector times out, check that it matches the live page and that the element is rendered in the requested viewport and state.
Use an application-owned ready marker when you control the site
For an application you own, a clear ready marker set after the relevant content has rendered provides a more meaningful contract than an arbitrary sleep. Configure your capture workflow to wait for that marker. The marker should represent the specific content required in the screenshot, not merely that the app shell has mounted.

Use navigation events for the right kind of page
For a simple static page, waiting for load may be enough. ScreenshotAPI documents load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2 as waitUntil choices. These describe navigation or network conditions; none inherently confirms that a particular application component has rendered.
Playwright documents navigation events including commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle. It defines networkidle as at least 500 ms with no network connections and discourages using it as a general readiness test; its guidance recommends web assertions to assess readiness instead. Background requests and a quiet network window do not necessarily line up with the visual state you want.

Add a delay only for a known settling period
A post-load delay can help with a brief animation or transition after the content is already present. ScreenshotAPI documents a delay from 0 to 20,000 ms; ScreenshotCore documents an added delay from 0 to 10,000 ms. A fixed delay does not verify that data or a widget arrived: too short still produces an early image, while too long wastes time. Prefer a selector or ready marker when possible.
Account for lazy-loaded content
If an image or section below the fold is absent, check whether it is lazy-loaded. The capture workflow may need to scroll the page before taking the screenshot to trigger loading. ScreenshotAPI documents a doScroll option for this purpose. Do not assume that requesting a full-page screenshot alone triggers the same behavior: ScreenshotAPI documents fullPage and doScroll as separate options.

Set finite timeouts and inspect failures
Use a timeout long enough for the page’s expected response, but finite enough to report a stalled navigation or missing readiness signal. ScreenshotAPI provides a timeout setting. ScreenshotCore documents navigation timeouts from 5,000 to 85,000 ms and says selector and navigation timeouts return 422 responses. These are vendor-specific behaviors, not settings to assume for another API.
A timeout is useful diagnostic information: it distinguishes “the expected content never appeared” from “the service captured whatever happened to be there.” When it occurs, verify the selector, the page’s requested state and viewport, and whether the content is actually available without interaction.

Compare capture approaches by the controls you need
| Approach | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation event | A static page is ready at a known browser lifecycle stage. | Which events the provider accepts and what its default is. |
| Selector or readiness marker | A specific element or application state indicates the content is ready. | Whether the target is content-specific and how selector timeouts are reported. |
| Fixed delay | Content is present, but a known brief transition needs to settle. | The provider’s supported range; a delay alone does not confirm rendering. |
| Scroll or interaction before capture | Lazy-loaded content or a page state requires scrolling or another action. | Whether the service supports the required action before capture. |
For any implementation, also check whether navigation and selector waits have separate limits, whether failures are visible to your caller, and whether the service supports the page interactions your target requires. The reviewed API references establish selector, delay, and scroll controls for the named services, not a complete feature comparison across providers.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
- The page shell appears, but data does not: Replace a generic navigation wait with a selector or app-owned marker tied to the data-dependent content.
- The selector times out: Confirm the CSS selector against the rendered page, check whether the element exists in the requested viewport or state, and make sure it is a valid signal for readiness.
- Network idle still captures too early: Use a content-specific wait. A quiet network window is not proof that the relevant visual update has completed.
- A longer delay does not fix it: Check whether the content requires an interaction, whether the data request failed, or whether the selected delay is merely guessing. A delay cannot make unavailable content render.
- Content below the fold is missing: Enable the provider’s documented pre-capture scrolling option, if available; do not rely on full-page mode to trigger lazy loading.
- The capture waits indefinitely or fails inconsistently: Set a finite timeout, inspect whether the provider distinguishes navigation from selector timeouts, and check the page’s response and readiness signal.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can capture a URL in one GET request; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each of these steps can be turned off.
- Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. - The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does full-page capture trigger lazy-loaded images?
Not necessarily. ScreenshotAPI documents its full-page and pre-capture scrolling options separately; check whether your provider requires scrolling to trigger lazy loading.
What does network idle mean in Playwright?
Playwright defines it as no network connections for at least 500 ms, but discourages it as a general readiness condition in favor of web assertions.
