If the wheel works in the PS5 menus but not in one game, check that game’s specific wheel support and settings rather than treating it as a console connection failure.
1. Confirm the exact wheel and wheelbase support PS5
Check the model name printed on the wheelbase and consult the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information for that exact model. A wheel that works on a PC—or a steering rim used with a compatible base—does not establish that the full setup works on PS5. For Fanatec systems, PlayStation compatibility is built into select wheelbases, including the Gran Turismo DD Pro and ClubSport DD+, rather than into the steering wheel itself. Fanatec’s compatibility FAQ identifies its supported bases and their console licensing.

Compatibility with the PS5 and support in a particular game are separate questions. Check the wheel maker’s information for both the device and the title you want to play.
2. Set the correct PlayStation mode before connecting
If the wheelbase has a platform switch, use the position specified for PlayStation before plugging it into the console. For the T150, Thrustmaster says the switch must be in the PS5-PS4 position before connecting the wheel to a console USB port. See the T150 support instructions.

Thrustmaster T128
The T128 indicates its mode with an LED: green is PC mode, blue is PlayStation standard compatibility, and red is PlayStation future compatibility. Thrustmaster’s instructions recommend blue for PS4 and PS5. Follow the current instructions for your model and check the game’s listed mode; do not assume another wheel uses the same colors or button sequence. Read the T128 mode instructions.
Fanatec bases
Fanatec’s troubleshooting guidance says to select PS mode; its supported setup uses a blue power LED as an indicator. Use the guidance for your specific base rather than transferring another manufacturer’s mode indicators. See Fanatec’s console-recognition steps.

3. Simplify the USB and power connection
- Turn off the console if the wheel maker’s setup instructions call for it, then connect the wheelbase directly to a PS5 USB port.
- Remove USB hubs, extenders, and extension cables while troubleshooting. If there is no response, try another PS5 USB port.
- Check that the USB cable and connectors are seated and show no visible damage. Connect the wheel’s power supply exactly as its manufacturer specifies.
For the T150, Thrustmaster also advises connecting the power supply directly to a wall outlet, rather than through a power strip or extension cord, when investigating power or abnormal calibration issues. That advice is model-specific; follow the power setup for your own wheel. Logitech’s G29 PlayStation checklist likewise recommends trying another port and avoiding a USB hub. See Logitech’s G29 troubleshooting checklist.

4. Let the wheel start, then press its PS button
Allow the wheel to complete its normal startup or calibration. Then press the wheel’s PS button to enter or access the PlayStation session. A wheel that has calibrated is not necessarily through every console-recognition step: Thrustmaster’s T150 instructions and Fanatec’s troubleshooting both include pressing the PS button.

- Included wireless receiver plugs directly into your console and offers up to 32ft range
- Securely fasten the wheel to your desk, table, or racing wheel stand with the sturdy clamp

5. Check whether the problem is the PS5 or one game
Try navigating the PS5 menus with the wheel, then test a different game that the manufacturer lists as compatible with that exact model. If the menus or another supported game respond, focus on the target title’s compatibility and configuration rather than repeatedly reconnecting the hardware.
- Confirm the game’s PS5 version supports your wheel model.
- Check whether the game requires a particular wheel mode.
- Install available game and console updates, then review the game’s control settings.
Thrustmaster’s T128 game list identifies supported platform versions and, for some titles, the required mode. Logitech also recommends checking updates and console and in-game settings when troubleshooting a G29. Check the T128 support page and game list. A broad claim that every PS5 racing game supports every wheel is not safe: support can vary by model, title, platform version, and mode.

6. Update firmware using the exact model’s current process
Open the support page for the wheelbase and follow its current firmware instructions. The process is manufacturer- and model-specific. Fanatec’s instructions use a Windows PC, its latest driver package, and the firmware update manager. Thrustmaster notes that some compatible games may require the latest wheel firmware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the Logitech G29, Logitech says its older Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained. Do not rely on that retired tool; use current guidance on the official support page for your device.

7. Use model-specific recovery steps or contact support
If the wheel has no lights or startup calibration, check its power and USB connections first. Some Thrustmaster models have wake-up or bootloader procedures for particular symptoms: the T150 support page covers a procedure for a wheel with no calibration and no LED, and the T128 support page has model-specific wake-up guidance for loss of firmware. Use those procedures only if the model and symptom match.
Inspect the wheelbase USB port and cable for visible damage. If damage is present, or the manufacturer’s steps do not restore recognition, contact the wheel maker’s technical support. Include the exact model, firmware version if known, whether the wheel starts or calibrates, whether the PS5 menus respond, the affected game, and the steps already tried. Fanatec’s support guidance recommends contacting technical support when troubleshooting fails or damage is visible.
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| What happens | What to check next |
|---|---|
| No lights or startup calibration | Check model-specific power and USB connections. If it is a T150 or T128 and the symptom matches, use the applicable Thrustmaster wake-up or bootloader guidance. |
| Wheel lights or calibrates, but the PS5 does not respond | Reconfirm exact-model PS5 compatibility, select PlayStation mode before connection, connect directly to another USB port, then press the PS button. |
| PS5 menus work, but one game does not | Check that title’s support for the exact wheel and platform version, required mode, updates, and in-game settings. |
| Still not detected, or cable/port damage is visible | Stop trying generic mode combinations and contact the manufacturer with the model, firmware version if known, symptoms, and troubleshooting already attempted. |
When replacement is worth considering
Do not treat buying another wheel as the default fix. Consider replacement only after the compatibility checks point to an unsupported model or support identifies a hardware fault. Compare explicit PS5 compatibility for the base, support for the games you play, mode and firmware requirements, and whether the existing device or cable may be serviceable under support or warranty. A T128 is one PS5-compatible example with manufacturer-published mode instructions and a game list, not a required replacement or a guarantee that replacement will resolve every recognition problem.
