One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf a PULSE Elite update fails or appears stuck, use one of PlayStation’s documented update routes: check for device software through a PS5, or update the headset and USB adapter with the PlayStation Link PC Driver on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer. If the headset is also malfunctioning, try its supported reset. PlayStation’s support pages reviewed here do not describe a special recovery procedure for firmware frozen mid-installation, so avoid interrupting an installation or trying undocumented button sequences.
The best next step depends on how you started the update. If you are on PS5, check the console’s system software and the PS Link device update menu. If you are using a computer, confirm the Windows and cable requirements, then use the PC Driver. The two routes are alternatives; the available support information does not say that one is faster or more reliable than the other.

First, identify which update route you are using
PULSE Elite and its PlayStation Link USB adapter can receive updates through a PS5 or through the PlayStation Link PC Driver on a Windows PC. The routes have different requirements; PlayStation does not publish comparative success rates or update speeds. Before troubleshooting, note which route you used and whether the problem is that no update appears, the update fails to complete, or the headset itself is not responding. These are different situations: the documented steps can check for available software, address certain connection problems, and reset a malfunctioning headset, but PlayStation does not describe a special recovery sequence for firmware that has frozen during installation.

PlayStation does not specify a cable connector type in the cited PC Driver instructions. Use a suitable USB data cable; a new cable is not specified as a requirement. The PC route is an option if you do not have access to a PS5 or if the PS5 route is unavailable, but it still requires a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer, internet access, the PC Driver, and a USB cable for updating devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the distinction between the headset and the USB adapter in mind. Both can have firmware updates, and the PC Driver route may offer updates for both. If it does, PlayStation’s stated order is to update the adapter first and the headset afterward. The PS5 route, by contrast, is accessed through the PS Link device software update menu after updating the console software.
Check for an update on PS5
- Update the console. Install the current PS5 system software. PlayStation says headset and PlayStation Link adapter updates are added with PS5 system software updates. This means the console’s system software is part of the PS5 update route; checking only the headset menu while the console itself is out of date may not complete this first check. PlayStation Accessories support
- Make the PS Link device available to the console. Check that the headset and relevant PS Link device are available to the PS5 so the console can show its device software options. The cited guidance does not prescribe a special recovery connection or hidden pairing sequence for a failed update.
- Open the device update area. On PS5, go to Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. Use this specific PS Link device software area rather than assuming an update will always appear in a general system update screen.
- Follow the prompt. If the console offers an update, follow the on-screen instructions and allow the process to complete. Do not treat an absent prompt as proof that the update failed: the console may simply have no update available for the device at that time.
If no update is offered, the console may not have an update available for the device at that time. Check that the PS5 system software is current and revisit the PS Link device update area. PlayStation’s support guidance does not provide a manual firmware file or an alternate PS5 button sequence for forcing an update that is not offered.
If the update prompt appears but the process does not complete, the documented information does not identify a specific cause or a recovery procedure for a frozen installation. Avoid turning a connection check or a reset into an assumed firmware-recovery step. You can use the Windows route as an alternate supported way to check for available device firmware, but do not assume it will repair firmware already frozen partway through an installation.

Update through a Windows PC
- Confirm the requirements. Use a PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11 with internet access. PlayStation lists a USB cable for updating devices. PlayStation Link PC Driver support
- Install or open the PlayStation Link PC Driver. Use PlayStation’s PC Driver instructions to set it up and access the update controls. The driver is the documented Windows route; the cited guidance does not establish a third-party updater or a separate downloadable manual firmware file as an alternative.
- Connect the device you want to update. Connect the headset or adapter as directed by the driver, using the USB cable where required. The support instructions reviewed here list a USB cable, but do not specify its connector type. If you already have a suitable USB data cable, a new cable is not a documented requirement.
- Check for available firmware updates. Use the driver’s update controls to check the headset and adapter. An update may be available for one device, both, or neither. If both the adapter and headset have updates available, update the adapter first, then update the headset.
- Let the update finish. Follow the driver’s prompts. Do not disconnect a device or force a restart as an attempted recovery for an update that appears frozen; PlayStation’s cited instructions do not establish that as a safe recovery method. If the process still appears stuck, stop short of trying an undocumented button sequence and contact PlayStation Support.
The PC route is useful when you want to check device firmware from a supported Windows computer, including when a PS5 is not available. Its requirements are specific: Windows 10 or Windows 11, internet access, the PlayStation Link PC Driver, and a USB cable for device updates. It is not a route documented for macOS or other operating systems in the reviewed support information.
When both devices are being updated, keep the order straight: adapter first, headset second. This is the order PlayStation specifies for the PC Driver when both updates are available. The cited instructions do not give an estimated duration, success-rate comparison, or a promise that switching routes will resolve a stalled installation.

If you are missing a suitable cable, the evidence only supports the modest practical point that a USB data cable is needed for the PC update route. PlayStation does not name the connector type in the cited instructions, and it does not say that a newly purchased cable is necessary. Confirm what you already have before buying anything.
If the headset is not responding, try its supported reset
This reset is for a headset that is malfunctioning; it is not documented as a way to recover firmware frozen during installation. Use it when the headset itself is unresponsive or not working properly, rather than as a substitute for an update prompt or as a mid-installation recovery technique.
- Hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds.
- Press the PS Link button again to power the headset back on.
PlayStation Support says, “Resetting won’t affect any PlayStation Link™ or Bluetooth pairings, or audio settings.” Source: PlayStation Accessories support
This is the less disruptive of the two headset troubleshooting actions described in the support guidance because PlayStation says it preserves PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. Follow the button timing as stated: hold for at least 10 seconds, release, then press again to power the headset back on. The documented reset does not promise to complete, roll back, or repair a firmware installation that has stopped partway through.
A more disruptive option: wipe paired connections only if needed
If a normal reset does not solve a separate pairing or connection problem, PlayStation also describes wiping paired connections. This is a later, more disruptive troubleshooting step, not an update-specific fix. The wipe removes PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings, so do not choose it casually if your goal is only to get an update moving.
PlayStation’s described sequence is to hold the PS Link button until the status light quickly blinks blue, then repeat the hold. A successful wipe briefly blinks red. This action removes the paired connections and audio settings; be prepared to set those up again. The cited guidance does not say that this wipe recovers a firmware update frozen during installation, so it should not be presented as a firmware fix.

Check connections and the PC Driver menu
For PS Link connection problems
PlayStation’s connection guidance recommends checking that software is current, that nothing is blocking the connection, trying a front USB port, and reducing interference from a nearby wireless router. These are connection troubleshooting suggestions, not evidence that interference causes or fixes a firmware update frozen in progress. The Norwegian PS Link guidance refers to software version 2.0 or newer as general connection guidance; that threshold is not an update-failure statistic. PlayStation Support: Troubleshoot PS Link connections
Use these suggestions if the device is not connecting as expected or the PS Link connection is unreliable. Check for an obstruction, try the suggested front USB port, and reduce nearby wireless-router interference. Also make sure the relevant software is current. These checks address connection conditions; they do not establish what caused a firmware update to stall, and they should not be described as a guaranteed way to unfreeze an installation.
The version 2.0-or-newer reference on the Norwegian support page is connection guidance, not a published failure rate, an update-speed measure, or evidence about how often PULSE Elite updates fail. No failure-frequency statistic is provided in the reviewed sources. Do not infer how common this problem is from the version threshold.
If the PC Driver quick menu does not appear
If you are using the PC Driver and its quick menu is missing, PlayStation’s troubleshooting advice is to check the adapter connection and restart the computer before checking the menu again:
- Remove and reinsert the USB adapter.
- Reboot the PC.
- Check the quick menu again.
This sequence is for a missing PC Driver quick menu, not a documented repair for an update frozen midway. If the menu appears but the device update still cannot be completed, do not assume that repeating the quick-menu steps will recover the firmware. Return to the supported update instructions and contact PlayStation if the problem persists.
If a PS Link device is not working properly, PlayStation recommends updating its firmware and trying a device reset. PlayStation Link PC Driver support The reset steps above are the supported headset reset described by PlayStation. Keep the distinction clear: updating firmware and resetting a malfunctioning device are general troubleshooting recommendations, not a special mid-installation recovery process.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact PlayStation
If the update remains stuck or repeatedly fails after using the supported route and connection checks, contact PlayStation Support for help specific to the headset and update state. The support pages cited here do not document a special mid-installation recovery process. They also do not establish that repeatedly restarting, disconnecting during installation, factory resetting, or using an alternate button sequence will recover the firmware, so do not treat those as proven fixes.
Recommended Free Tools
Before contacting support, it can help to describe the route you used (PS5 or Windows PC), whether the PS5 system software or PC Driver was involved, whether the adapter and headset both had updates pending, and what the device is doing now. This is not a PlayStation-prescribed diagnostic checklist; it is a way to explain the situation clearly without trying unverified recovery steps. If the headset is malfunctioning independently of the update, mention whether you tried the supported 10-second reset and whether the issue changed.
Do not keep repeating actions that the official instructions do not identify as safe firmware recovery. The reviewed sources do not recommend disconnecting a device during installation, forcing repeated restarts, factory resetting, or using a guessed button combination. If the documented update route, connection checks, or PC Driver menu steps do not resolve the issue, PlayStation Support is the appropriate escalation point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available guidance does—and does not—say
The official information reviewed supports two ways to check and apply PULSE Elite and PS Link adapter software: PS5 system software and the PS Link device software menu, or the PlayStation Link PC Driver on Windows 10/11 with internet and a USB cable. It also supports a 10-second headset reset, a separate pairing wipe with clear consequences, and some connection and PC Driver menu checks.
It does not provide a failure rate, comparative speed or success data for the two update routes, or a special procedure for firmware frozen mid-installation. The 2.0-or-newer reference is a connection-guidance threshold, not a statistic. Keep troubleshooting within the steps PlayStation documents and ask PlayStation Support about a persistent failure.

How do I update a PULSE Elite headset?
On PS5, install current PS5 system software, then go to Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update and follow any on-screen prompt. Alternatively, use the PlayStation Link PC Driver on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with internet access and a USB cable for device updates. If both headset and adapter updates are available in the PC Driver, update the adapter first.
Can I update PULSE Elite without a PS5?
Yes. PlayStation documents the PlayStation Link PC Driver as a Windows route for updating the PULSE Elite headset and its USB adapter. You need Windows 10 or Windows 11, internet access, the PC Driver, and a USB cable for updating devices. The cited instructions do not specify a cable connector type.
Will resetting the headset erase my PS Link or Bluetooth pairings?
PlayStation says the supported headset reset does not affect PS Link or Bluetooth pairings or audio settings. Hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds, then press it again to power the headset back on. This reset is for a malfunctioning headset; PlayStation does not document it as recovery for a firmware update frozen mid-installation.
Does wiping paired connections fix a stuck update?
PlayStation documents a paired-connection wipe for connection troubleshooting, not as a firmware-update recovery step. It removes PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. Use it only as a later, disruptive connection step if needed: hold the PS Link button until the status light quickly blinks blue, then repeat the hold; a successful wipe briefly blinks red.
What if the PlayStation Link PC Driver quick menu does not appear?
PlayStation recommends removing and reinserting the USB adapter, rebooting the PC, and checking the quick menu again. These steps address the missing menu; they are not documented as recovery for an update that is already frozen.
Is there a published statistic for how often PULSE Elite updates fail?
No failure-frequency statistic was found in the reviewed support sources. The Norwegian PS Link guidance’s reference to software version 2.0 or newer is a connection-guidance threshold, not a statistic about update failures.
The Bottom Line
Use the PS5 device-software menu or the PlayStation Link PC Driver on Windows 10/11 to check for PULSE Elite updates. For the PC route, you need internet and a USB cable; update the adapter first if both it and the headset have updates pending. Use the 10-second reset for a malfunctioning headset, not as an undocumented firmware recovery. If the update remains stuck, contact PlayStation Support rather than interrupting installation or trying unverified steps.
