If your Pixel started freezing, losing battery faster, or dropping Wi-Fi or mobile service after an Android update, work through the checks below in order. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem: an app, low storage, network trouble, carrier settings, or a hardware fault can produce similar symptoms. Google’s support steps are general guidance, not a diagnosis for every Pixel model or software release.
Start by identifying the symptom and restarting
First note whether the problem affects one app or the whole phone, whether it happens on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, and whether an app update arrived around the same time as Android. This helps distinguish a phone-wide issue from an app or connection problem.

If the screen is frozen, hold the Power button for about 30 seconds to restart the phone, as Google’s freeze troubleshooting instructions advise. For a normal restart, Pixel 6 and later use Power + Volume Up to open the power controls; on Pixel 5a and earlier, use the Power button to access restart controls. Button behavior and menu labels can vary by model and Android version.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check for updates and available storage
- Open Settings > System > Software update and install an update if one is offered.
- Open Google Play and update your apps.
- Go to Settings > Storage. Google warns that Pixel phones can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available; that is a troubleshooting threshold, not proof that low storage caused your symptom. Remove files or apps you no longer need if space is tight.
Pixel updates can include operating-system changes, security enhancements, features, and bug fixes. Rollouts vary by device and carrier and may take a few weeks to reach a phone, so check the update status on your own device rather than expecting a corrective update immediately. See Google’s Pixel update guidance.

Use Safe mode to check for a downloaded app
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the freezing or slowdown stops in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a likely contributor. Restart normally, remove recently installed or updated apps one at a time, and restart between removals to see whether the symptom returns. Google’s instructions for finding and removing problematic apps explain how to enter Safe mode on Pixel phones.
If the problem continues in Safe mode, continue with system or network checks rather than assuming an app is responsible. For Wi-Fi testing in Safe mode, Airplane mode turns on automatically on some Pixel instructions; turn it off before judging Wi-Fi or calls. See Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

If your Pixel battery drains faster after the update
Google says, “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” The phone may work harder while it downloads and optimizes new software. If unusual drain continues beyond a few days, investigate further rather than assuming it is still normal update activity. Google’s battery troubleshooting guide recommends checking which apps use the most power.

- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on. Check that Airplane mode is off, then restart the phone.
- Connect another device to the same Wi-Fi. If it also cannot get online, the router or internet service is a stronger suspect. If it works, continue troubleshooting the Pixel.
- On the Pixel, forget the saved network and join it again with the password. On public Wi-Fi, check whether a sign-in page needs to be completed.
- If the problem persists, test in Safe mode to check for app interference.
As a later step, Google provides a Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi option. It removes saved Wi-Fi connections, so have the relevant passwords available before using it. Google’s Wi-Fi help page describes these checks.
If your Pixel has no mobile data or signal
Confirm mobile data and Use SIM are enabled, Airplane mode is off, and the phone has signal. If calls and data fail in one area but work elsewhere, coverage may be the cause. Ask your carrier about local outages, plan changes, or account settings; carrier-dependent features vary by country and plan.

Network type and 5G availability depend on the country, Pixel configuration, carrier, and coverage. A 5G icon alone does not guarantee that the phone is currently receiving 5G service. If basic checks do not help, the separate Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings action can reset mobile settings. It is different from the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reset. See Google’s mobile connectivity guidance.

Choose the next step by its risk and diagnostic value
| Option | What it helps establish | Risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Restart, update, check storage, and test Safe mode | Checks common software and downloaded-app causes before more disruptive recovery. | Low data risk; Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. |
| Reset Wi-Fi/Bluetooth or mobile network settings | Targets the affected connection type. | Removes saved network configuration; choose the reset that matches the problem. |
| Factory data reset | Can help with persistent settings or third-party-software problems. | Erases device data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Back up first. |
| Google software repair or support | Provides an escalation route when basic troubleshooting fails. | The repair tool requires a computer and a USB cable that connects to the phone; repair routes and eligibility vary by location and device. |
Back up before a factory reset or repair
A factory reset is destructive: Google says it removes data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Back up anything you want to keep before proceeding. If you cannot open Settings, Google documents a button-based Fastboot/Recovery reset; it also erases data. Follow Google’s reset instructions for the appropriate method and model.

If basic steps fail, Google’s computer-assisted Update and Software Repair tool is another official option. It requires a computer and a USB cable that connects to the phone. Persistent faults may need Google support, a repair provider, or your carrier, depending on whether the issue appears to be with the handset or service.
Before taking the phone for service, you can enable Settings > System > Repair mode where available. Do not share your lock-screen PIN, password, or pattern with a technician. Google’s Repair mode instructions explain the feature.
