First identify what is failing: lock-screen wallpaper, clock appearance, or another lock-screen control. They use separate settings flows, and Google’s documented save step varies by clock-settings flow. If the setting still resets after you complete the right flow, Google’s published instructions do not establish a specific fix for repeated failures; use the checks below and contact Pixel support if the problem continues.
Identify which lock-screen change is not sticking
Pixel wallpaper and clock customization are separate. A wallpaper change can be applied to the lock screen or Home screen, while clock style, color, and size are adjusted in the lock-screen settings. Start with the control you meant to change rather than repeating the other flow.

- Wallpaper: the image or preset on the lock screen is unchanged or reverts.
- Clock: the clock design, color, or size does not change or later returns to a previous appearance.
- Other controls: shortcuts, notifications, or display options are in the lock-screen settings area, but Google’s cited instructions do not provide a reset-specific diagnosis for them.
Apply the change using the matching flow
For lock-screen wallpaper
- Touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen, then open Wallpaper & style.
- Tap Change wallpaper and choose Lock screen. Selecting Home screen changes a different screen.
- Choose a photo or preset, preview it, and tap Apply.
Google notes that wallpaper features vary by device and software version. For example, its instructions say AI wallpapers apply to Pixel 8 and later. Google’s wallpaper instructions describe the full flow.

For clock style, color, or size
- Touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen and tap Wallpaper & style.
- Swipe to Lock screen, then swipe up to reveal the settings and tap Clock.
- Adjust the available options and finish the flow: the Android 16-and-higher instructions say to tap Apply. A separate Google clock help flow says to tap the left arrow to save.
These save directions are not interchangeable universal buttons; follow the flow and controls shown on your device. Google specifies the clock-style instructions for Android 16 and higher. Google’s Pixel lock-screen customization instructions and Google’s clock instructions show the documented flows.

If a setting is missing or reverts
A control is missing
Check the Pixel model and Android version before treating a missing option as a fault. Google’s clock style instructions are for Android 16 and higher, and wallpaper capabilities can be model-dependent. Available choices may therefore differ from screenshots or steps for another device.
The change appears to save, then resets
Confirm that you selected the intended screen for wallpaper and completed the save or apply action for the control you changed. If it still reverts, the official instructions explain normal customization but do not identify a confirmed cause or remedy for repeated resets. Avoid assuming that clearing a cache, resetting the phone, or changing an accessory will fix it; the cited guidance does not establish those as solutions.

If Wallpaper & style keeps stopping
A September 21, 2026 Google Pixel Community post from a Pixel 7 user on Android 17 reported being unable to change the lock-screen clock design and seeing the error “Wallpaper & style keeps stopping.” The post is locked and marked duplicate, and Google cautions that community content may not be verified or current. It is an example of a reported symptom, not proof of an Android 17 defect or a confirmed fix. View the community post.
If the settings page crashes or the change continues to fail, record your Pixel model, Android version, the exact setting you changed, what you see after saving, and whether the interface crashes. Then contact official Pixel support. These details help describe the failure without presuming its cause.

How to interpret reports of clock colors not adapting
A May 2026 community thread describes clock colors remaining associated with a previous wallpaper until a Pixel 8 Pro user restarted on an April 5 stable update; a Product Expert suggested sending feedback. This is an anecdotal report, not evidence that the behavior is widespread or that restarting will reliably resolve it. Read the community thread.
