For a Windows PC game that crashes or runs slowly, start with a restart and a check of the game’s system requirements. Then update Windows and graphics drivers, verify the game files in its launcher, and test with non-essential background apps closed. If the game launches but stutters or slows under load, lower demanding graphics settings and check airflow. These steps help narrow down common causes; the right fix depends on the game, hardware, and symptoms.
First, identify what is failing
“Crashes” can describe different problems: the game may close before its menu appears, freeze during play, or trigger a full PC restart. Note when the problem happens and whether an error message appears. A game closing on its own points to a different troubleshooting path than a blue screen or a computer that powers off.

Before changing settings, record the game and launcher, game version, Windows version, CPU, graphics card (GPU), memory, and any recent game, Windows, or driver updates. Change one thing at a time and retry the game so you can tell whether a step made a difference.
Restart and check the game’s requirements
Restart the PC, then compare its hardware with the requirements on the specific game’s current store or support page. Requirements vary by game and can change with updates; there is no useful generic CPU or GPU cutoff. Steam cautions that a PC at or near a game’s minimum requirements may still have trouble launching or performing well. [Steam: My game isn’t launching. How can I resolve this?]
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Check the game’s recommended requirements too, if listed. Meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee smooth performance in every situation, particularly if other software is using system resources.
Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install pending Windows updates. For graphics drivers, use the GPU maker’s official support site—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—or your PC manufacturer’s support page. On a laptop, the manufacturer may provide drivers tailored to that model. Steam notes that an outdated driver can affect performance even when the GPU appears to meet the game’s requirements. Driver versions change frequently, so check the relevant vendor rather than relying on a version number in a general guide. If the problem began immediately after an update, note the version and check the game or GPU maker’s support guidance before attempting a rollback.
Verify or repair the game’s installed files
A game may fail to launch if installed files are missing or damaged. Use the verify, repair, or equivalent option in the launcher where available. Steam provides an integrity-check procedure for missing content and crashes; follow its current instructions because menus can change. Players using another launcher should consult that launcher’s own support steps. [Steam: Verify Integrity of Game Files]

Do not run Steam’s verification while another system-intensive process is underway. If the launcher finds and replaces files, try launching the game again before moving on to other changes.
Test for conflicts from background apps and overlays
Temporarily close non-essential applications and overlays, then test the game. If that helps, reopen or re-enable items one at a time to identify a conflict. Steam recommends disabling non-essential software when troubleshooting launch failures and closing unnecessary applications when addressing poor performance. For a controlled test, also remove unnecessary apps from Windows startup using current Microsoft instructions. If the problem persists and you suspect background interference, Microsoft’s clean-start troubleshooting can help isolate it; use Microsoft’s current procedure rather than steps written for an older Windows version. [Microsoft: How to perform a clean boot in Windows]
For poor performance, lower demanding graphics settings
If the game opens but runs slowly, reduce demanding options in its video or graphics menu and test again. Start with resolution, shadows, and effects; lower one or two settings at a time so you can see what helps. EA also recommends lowering in-game graphics settings and updating Windows and graphics drivers when addressing performance problems. [EA Help: Troubleshoot graphics issues on PC]

Some launch options are game-specific, not universal fixes. Steam mentions lower resolution or DirectX launch settings for some Valve games, and low shader detail or windowed mode as possibilities for integrated graphics. Do not copy a launch flag from another game unless that game’s own support guidance recommends it. [Steam: Improving Game Performance]
Check DirectX only if the game points to it
If an error names DirectX or another graphics API, check the game’s requirement and use Microsoft’s DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) to inspect the installed version and gather system details. Microsoft says a missing required DirectX version can prevent a game from working properly and directs users to Windows Update for the DirectX version supported by their Windows installation. Avoid third-party DirectX download sites. [Microsoft: How to install the latest version of DirectX]
Check airflow if the game slows or stutters under load
If performance starts out normally but drops after the PC has been working hard, check that vents are unobstructed and look for dust around vents and fans. Steam identifies poor ventilation and accumulated dust as possible contributors to heat-related performance problems; neither proves that heat is the cause on your PC. Follow the computer maker’s safe cleaning guidance if dust needs attention. [Steam: My game isn’t launching. How can I resolve this?]

Use Windows or the computer manufacturer’s diagnostics, or consult a technician if it keeps happening. Steam distinguishes these events from a game that closes on its own. [Steam: My game isn’t launching. How can I resolve this?]
Contact the game developer with useful details
If the general checks do not resolve the issue, send the developer the exact error text, when and how the failure occurs, the game and launcher versions, Windows version, CPU, GPU, memory, graphics-driver version, and steps you have already tried. Mention whether the game alone closes or the whole PC restarts, and whether the issue began after a particular update. Steam recommends contacting the developer when its general launch troubleshooting does not fix the problem. [Steam: My game isn’t launching. How can I resolve this?]
