If a Nintendo DS game will not start, first power off the system, insert the card label side down until it clicks, then turn the DS on and try the game again. If the game starts but will not save, do not assume the cartridge has a dead battery: Nintendo says DS and DSi game saves do not use backup batteries. Check whether the fault follows one card or affects several, and avoid rapid power cycling while troubleshooting.
Start with correct Game Card insertion
- Turn the DS off. Do not insert or remove a Game Card while the system is on.
- Insert the card label side down. Slide it into the Game Card slot until it clicks into place. It should fit easily; Nintendo says not to force it. Nintendo’s insertion instructions explain the correct orientation and startup procedure.
- Turn the system on. If the DS is set to manual startup, select the rectangle or Game Card slot indicator on the screen to launch the game.
Find out whether the card or the DS is the problem
Test with another known-working, licensed Game Card. If possible, also try the suspect card in another DS. Nintendo recommends these cross-checks in its Game Card troubleshooting steps. The results narrow the possibilities, but do not prove which component has failed.

| What happens | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| One card fails in this DS, but another game works | The suspect card is a stronger possibility. | Try the suspect card in another DS, if available, and inspect its contacts. |
| Several known-working cards fail in this DS | The DS or its Game Card slot is a stronger possibility. | Inspect the slot for visible foreign material and check whether the games work on another DS. |
| The suspect card works in another DS | The original DS becomes a stronger possibility. | Cross-test another licensed card in the original system. |
| The card launches, but progress does not persist | This is a save problem, distinct from card recognition or startup. | Follow the game’s save instructions and inspect the card contacts for visible contamination. |
Remove unlicensed accessories while testing. Nintendo notes that unlicensed products are not tested for compatibility and may not work correctly with all games. Look at the Game Card connector pins for visible bends or contamination, and check the slot for foreign material. Nintendo warns that bent or contaminated pins can stop a game from working and may damage the DS. Do not force a card or probe the slot with a metal object; see Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting.

A dead cartridge backup battery is not the explanation Nintendo gives for a DS or DSi save failure. Nintendo Support Japan states that backup batteries are not used to save Nintendo DS/DSi software. It also says dirty Game Card terminals can cause saving problems and recommends trying terminal cleaning. That does not establish that cleaning can repair a damaged save chip or recover lost progress. Nintendo’s support answer covers backup batteries and dirty terminals.

Check the specific game’s instructions for when and how it saves; some titles may require a particular menu action or save point. The official guidance cited here does not give a universal way to recover missing or corrupted DS save data. Do not assume that a failed save can be restored.
Avoid rapid power cycling
Use normal shutdowns and make one troubleshooting change at a time rather than repeatedly switching the system on and off. Nintendo’s DS and DS Lite safety precautions warn that rapidly toggling the power switch may shorten battery life and cause Game Cards to lose stored game information.

When to consider replacing the system
If several known-working cards fail in the same DS after the checks above, and the cards work in another system, the console may be at fault. Nintendo says it no longer offers service requests for the DS and directs owners to replace the system if its recognition troubleshooting does not solve the problem. Nintendo also says DSi and 3DS systems support nearly the entire DS library. Before buying a used replacement, verify compatibility for the specific game and any special peripheral it needs; secondhand condition, repair options, stock and prices vary by region.
A replacement Game Card is more plausible when the fault follows one card across systems. A replacement console is more plausible when multiple working cards fail in the same DS. These are diagnostic indications, not a guarantee that a particular part is defective.
