If a newly installed PC game will not open or crashes, start by recording the exact symptom, restarting the PC, and checking the game’s own system requirements. Then verify its files through the launcher, update Windows and graphics drivers from official sources, and temporarily close nonessential apps. If the problem persists, use the game’s official support guidance for the specific error rather than trying generic advanced fixes.
First, identify when the failure happens
Before changing settings, note what you see: does the launcher open, does the game briefly appear as running, and at what point does it exit? Record the exact error text and whether the crash happens immediately or only after play begins. Keep any crash report the game offers. These details help you find the right official support article and give support staff something reproducible.

Restart the PC and check the game’s requirements
- Restart Windows, then try launching the game once more.
- Open the game’s official store or support page and compare its stated requirements with your PC’s CPU, memory, graphics hardware, operating system, and any other listed requirements.
Requirements vary by game, so there is no universal CPU, RAM, or graphics threshold that can diagnose every launch problem. Steam notes that a PC at or near a game’s minimum requirements may have trouble launching or performing reliably; a system below minimum may not run the title. If your hardware meets minimum but not recommended specifications, lowering graphics settings may help once you can reach them.
Steam Support summarizes the difficulty of diagnosing a general launch failure: “Games may not launch for a number of reasons, most of which are hard to diagnose due to the number of unique hardware and software configurations users have.” Its general troubleshooting guide recommends starting with the individual game’s requirements and support information.

Verify the installed game files
A missing or damaged download can keep a game from starting. Use the launcher’s built-in verification before deleting or reinstalling the game.
Steam
- Restart Steam.
- Open the game in your Library, select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the scan finish. Steam says the check can take several minutes.

Epic Games and other launchers
Use the launcher’s current instructions for the specific game. Epic’s file verification guide describes its process; Epic also recommends clearing the launcher cache where appropriate. Menu labels and steps can change, so follow the current guidance for your launcher rather than applying Steam’s path to another app.

- Install available Windows updates through Windows Update.
- Get graphics drivers from your GPU maker’s official support channel, and restart if the installer or Windows asks you to.
- Temporarily close nonessential background software, especially overlays, capture tools, and similar utilities, then try launching again.
Steam, Epic, and game publishers identify updates and background software as troubleshooting areas, but an update is not guaranteed to fix a crash. Avoid permanently disabling security software. Consider an exclusion only for a specific trusted game and only according to the security vendor’s instructions.

Check whether the launcher or an online service is the problem
If the launcher itself will not start, crashes, or cannot download or open games, the fault may be separate from the game. For Epic Games Launcher, Epic recommends checking service status, launcher updates and requirements, cache, graphics drivers, and background apps. If a service is down, local troubleshooting may not help until Epic restores it.

Supported runtimes, launch options, and repair steps differ by title. For example, Epic’s Rocket League guidance names a specific DirectX version, while its Fall Guys guidance includes repairing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables and collecting diagnostic files. Those are game-specific examples, not universal fixes for every PC game. Search the exact error in the game’s current official support knowledge base and follow instructions for that title.

Do not start with registry edits, DLL downloads from unofficial sites, unofficial driver utilities, or reinstalling Windows. Those steps can create new problems and are not supported as general first-line fixes; use an advanced change only when the game’s authoritative instructions identify a reason for it.

If the game still fails, contact its developer or publisher through an official support channel. Include the exact error, when it occurs, steps you have already tried, and steps that reliably reproduce it. Add your PC make and model if relevant, CPU and GPU, memory, Windows version, and graphics-driver version. Attach diagnostic files only when official support requests them.
Some publishers request a DxDiag report. Capcom’s instructions for generating one say to open Run, enter dxdiag, and save the report. Epic’s Fall Guys guidance also requests diagnostic files and the date and time of the error. Use the current instructions for your game and share files only through its official support channel.
