How to Fix a Magnetic Keyboard That Misses or Repeats Keystrokes

Start with model-specific calibration, then adjust trigger sensitivity for repeats, check official firmware guidance, and test the connection only when symptoms point to it.

If a Hall-effect (magnetic) keyboard misses presses, types characters twice, or leaves a key active, start by recalibrating it in the manufacturer’s software. Then adjust actuation or Rapid Trigger sensitivity if input is repeating, check for official firmware updates, and test the connection if the keyboard also disconnects. Controls and repair steps vary by model, so use instructions for your exact keyboard.

First, identify the symptom

Confirm that the keyboard uses magnetic or Hall-effect switches, then note its exact model and the software it uses. Do not assume another brand’s menu names or calibration procedure apply.

Test the affected key in a plain text field and, if practical, in another application. This can help distinguish a keyboard-level problem from one limited to a particular app. Note whether the issue affects one key or several, and whether it is a missed press, repeated characters, a key that stays active, or a broader connection interruption.

Recalibrate keys that miss or behave inconsistently

Calibration is a sensible first step when input is missing or inconsistent. Akko’s guidance for its HE/magnetic keyboards recommends updating the driver or firmware and recalibrating. Its procedure calls for pressing and releasing each key to its lowest point using similar, moderate force, then repeating calibration if a key still behaves incorrectly. See Akko’s support guidance and follow the instructions for your own model and software.

  1. Open the keyboard maker’s official configuration software and find its calibration control.
  2. Run the complete calibration procedure, pressing and releasing each key as instructed. For Akko’s described procedure, take every key to the bottom with similar, moderate force.
  3. Test the affected key again in a text field. If the fault remains, repeat calibration only if the manufacturer recommends it, then proceed to the relevant steps below.

Reduce sensitivity when keys repeat or stay active

An actuation point set too sensitively, or a Rapid Trigger setting that responds to very small movement, can contribute to unintended input. Keychron recommends increasing trigger distance for a magnetic key that remains “on,” and MCHOSE also identifies overly sensitive trigger settings as a possible cause of intermittent or repeated input.

  1. In the keyboard’s own software, increase trigger distance or make actuation/Rapid Trigger less sensitive.
  2. Change one setting at a time, then test the same key. This makes it easier to tell whether a setting change affected the symptom.
  3. If the key still sticks or repeats, restore a comfortable setting and continue with the model’s official update or reset guidance.

See Keychron’s stuck-key troubleshooting and MCHOSE support for manufacturer-specific advice; their procedures are not universal menu instructions.

Update firmware, and reset only as the maker instructs

Check the manufacturer’s official software or support page for a firmware update for the exact keyboard model. Akko and MCHOSE include firmware updates in their troubleshooting guidance. A reset can also be appropriate for persistent chattering: Keychron recommends trying a factory reset for the chattering symptom covered by its support page. Use the exact model’s official update and reset procedures rather than generic flashing instructions.

After an update or reset, recalibrate if the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, then test the affected keys again. Keychron’s guidance for a key stuck on also recommends recording the affected keys in its Trigger Demo and sending the video to support if calibration and trigger-distance adjustment do not resolve the fault: Keychron support.

Check the cable and port if the keyboard disconnects

If the problem includes disconnections or other signs of an interrupted connection, reconnect the keyboard and test it directly with the computer rather than through a hub. Try another USB port and, if available, a known-good cable compatible with the exact keyboard. MCHOSE and Keychron recommend connection checks for the symptoms covered in their troubleshooting material.

  • Reconnect the keyboard firmly.
  • Test another direct USB port on the computer.
  • If the keyboard uses a detachable cable, try a known-good compatible replacement.

A cable or port check is relevant to connection symptoms; it will not necessarily fix a calibration or switch fault.

When to replace a switch or contact support

If the same single key remains faulty after the applicable calibration and software steps, a switch problem is possible. Replacement is not universal: check the exact keyboard’s official service instructions and confirm that the model supports user-replaceable switches and that the spare is compatible. MCHOSE recommends trying an included spare switch for a suspected fault, while Akko advises completing firmware and calibration steps before reassessing. Do not assume magnetic switches interchange across brands or models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If replacement is unsupported, you cannot confirm part compatibility, or the problem persists after an allowed replacement, contact the manufacturer. Include the exact model, affected keys, what you tried, and a short video when useful; Keychron specifically suggests a Trigger Demo recording for a persistent stuck-on key.

Choose the next step by symptom

Symptom Start with If it persists
Missed or inconsistent presses Manufacturer’s calibration procedure Check official firmware guidance; investigate an individual switch only under the model’s service instructions
Repeated characters or a key that stays active Make actuation or Rapid Trigger less sensitive; increase trigger distance where available Follow the maker’s firmware/reset steps, then contact support if unresolved
Multiple keys or input affected alongside disconnects Reconnect and test a direct port and compatible cable Continue with model-specific calibration and support guidance if connection checks do not resolve it
