The fix depends first on what Humble actually delivered. A Steam key creates a normal Steam library game and can use Steam’s Proton and file-verification tools. A DRM-free download or separate launcher is a non-Steam installation, so Steam’s game-specific troubleshooting may not apply in the same way. Identify that distinction, update SteamOS, check the game’s Deck rating, and then follow the matching path below.
Start with the two questions that determine the fix
Before changing compatibility settings, establish exactly what copy you own and where it is installed. “Bought from Humble” describes the store, not necessarily the technical format of the game.

Do not assume that a Humble download is a Steam key, and do not assume that every non-Steam copy will behave like a Steam library title. The particular game, edition, installer, and error are not known here, so no universal Humble redemption sequence or guaranteed compatibility result exists.
Do these low-risk checks first
Install SteamOS updates and restart
Open the Deck’s system update controls, install any available SteamOS update, and restart the device. Valve places updating and restarting among the first troubleshooting actions for instability. A restart also clears a process that may have been left behind by a failed launch.

Close third-party desktop applications
If you installed utilities through Desktop Mode, exit them before testing the game again. Overlay, performance, input, or customization software can interfere with a launch. Disable or close nonessential applications, restart the Deck, and test one more time before making deeper changes.
Record the failure instead of guessing
Note whether you see a window at all, whether a launcher opens and then closes, whether Steam returns immediately to the Play button, and whether an error message appears. Also record the exact game name, edition, installed location, and whether the copy is a Steam key or a standalone download. Those details determine which later steps are meaningful.
Step 1: confirm what Humble delivered
Open the relevant purchase or library page on Humble and inspect the redemption and download information. You are looking for the delivery method, not merely the game’s title.

- Look for downloadable installers or archives. If Humble supplied files to download, the game is independent of the Steam library unless you deliberately add it as a non-Steam game. Its installer may target Windows, Linux, or a particular launcher.
- Check for a separate account or launcher. A title can require an external service even when the files came from Humble. A sign-in, subscription entitlement, or launcher update can fail before the game itself starts.
The exact Humble options vary by purchase and game. If the page does not make the format clear, do not proceed on the assumption that a Steam key is included; use the displayed redemption or download information and retain it when asking the publisher for help.

Step 2: read the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating
Find the title’s Steam Deck compatibility details in the Steam library or Steam store. Valve’s rating is a review of the Steam version and can change as the game, SteamOS, and review status change.

A rating is not a promise for every edition or installation method. A standalone Humble build may differ from the Steam build that Valve reviewed, and a rating can change after an update.
Step 3: troubleshoot a game that is in your Steam library
Use this path only when the Humble purchase became a Steam library title. It is the most direct route because Steam can select a compatibility layer and inspect the files it installed.

Force a current Proton tool
- Highlight the game in the Steam library.
- Open Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest Proton option available in the list, then close Properties and try Play again.
Steam may download the Windows version of a game when only its Linux version is installed. Allow that download to finish before judging the result. If the latest Proton choice does not help, record which version you tried rather than repeatedly changing settings without a testable comparison.

Verify the installed files
A partial or corrupted download can make Steam return to the library without opening the game. In the game’s Steam properties, use Steam’s installed-file verification option when it is available. Let the process complete, allow Steam to reacquire any damaged files, and then launch the title again.
Verification is useful for a Steam installation; it does not validate an installer or archive that you downloaded separately from Humble. A non-Steam copy needs the checks provided by its own installer or launcher.
Check the platform and requirements
Valve lists unsupported platform behavior, outdated system software or drivers, interfering software, corrupted files, and unmet system requirements among possible causes of a launch failure. Confirm that the Steam version is installed completely, that the game supports the platform you are using, and that its published requirements are compatible with the Deck. Do not interpret a successful download as proof that every requirement has been met.

Step 4: troubleshoot a DRM-free or other non-Steam installation
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ states: “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton on Steam Deck.” That confirms a general capability, not that a particular Humble game, installer, or launcher will work without configuration.

Separate the installer from the game executable
A downloaded installer can fail before it creates a usable game entry. A launcher can open successfully while the game it manages fails later. Identify which component stops: the installer, the launcher, or the game executable. This tells you whether to investigate permissions and installation files, account and network checks, or the game’s Windows compatibility.
Add and test the game as a non-Steam title
Once the standalone game is installed, you can add its executable to Steam as a non-Steam game and test it with Proton. The exact procedure and executable location depend on the installer and game. Some packages include multiple executables, a launcher, or a separate configuration program; selecting the wrong one can look like a Proton failure.
Because Steam’s library-specific instructions were written for a Steam entry, do not assume that the same Properties path, automatic file management, or compatibility metadata applies to a separately downloaded build. Keep the installer’s documentation and the game’s publisher guidance available, and test the executable that the package identifies as the normal game start.
Expect differences from the Steam build
A DRM-free build may contain different files, patches, launcher behavior, or online checks from the Steam edition reviewed by Valve. A Steam Deck rating therefore cannot guarantee that the Humble download will launch. If the standalone copy fails while a Steam edition is rated Verified, report that distinction when seeking help rather than describing it only as “the game does not work on Deck.”

This table is a triage guide, not a diagnosis. The unspecified game and its error determine which branch is ultimately correct.
Do not confuse installation with offline play
Valve says an installed game can generally be played offline unless that particular game requires internet access. That exception can come from the game, a launcher, an online service, or a subscription entitlement. A Humble purchase does not by itself establish whether the title is offline-capable.
If the game launched previously but fails only without a connection, test once while online and observe what the launcher requests. If it requires an entitlement check, complete that check before switching to offline mode. If the game is advertised as offline-capable but still insists on a connection, record the exact message and contact the publisher; Steam cannot remove a requirement built into the title or its launcher.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Applying Steam instructions to a standalone download. Proton selection and file verification are most direct for a Steam library entry. A separate Humble installer has its own files and failure points.
- Treating “Playable” as “works without changes.” Playable means manual configuration or a noted limitation may be required.
- Treating “Unknown” as “Unsupported.” Unknown means Valve has not checked the title; it is not a negative compatibility verdict.
- Changing several variables at once. If you change Proton, reinstall, add a launcher, and install utilities together, you cannot tell which action helped or caused a new problem.
- Assuming a successful download proves compatibility. Installation can finish even when the game’s platform, launcher, or requirements prevent it from starting.
- Assuming internet access is always required. Installed games can work offline unless the particular title or service imposes an online check.
- Ignoring the exact edition. A Steam build, DRM-free build, and launcher-managed build can have different patches and behavior.
When to stop experimenting and ask for support
Escalate after you have updated and restarted the Deck, identified the delivery format, checked the compatibility rating, tried the appropriate Proton or file check, and closed interfering applications. Include useful facts rather than only saying that the game will not launch:
- The exact game name, edition, and version shown by the installer or launcher
- Whether Humble supplied a Steam key, a standalone download, or another launcher arrangement
- Whether the title appears in the Steam library
- The Steam Deck compatibility rating, if one exists
- The Proton version tested, for a Steam or Proton-based installation
- Whether file verification found and replaced anything
- The point of failure and the complete error text
- Whether the behavior changes when the Deck is online
Contact the game’s publisher or developer for a title-specific failure, especially when the standalone build or its launcher is involved. Contact Steam Support for Steam Deck, Steam client, library, or Steam-installed compatibility problems. Valve recommends Steam Support when general troubleshooting does not resolve a persistent issue.
A compact decision checklist
- Update SteamOS and restart the Deck.
- Close or disable nonessential third-party desktop applications.
- Confirm whether Humble delivered a Steam key, a standalone download, or a launcher-based copy.
- Check the title’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown rating.
- If it is a Steam library game, force the latest Proton available and let Steam finish any Windows-version download.
- Verify Steam-installed files when that option is available.
- If it is non-Steam, identify the installer, launcher, and actual game executable instead of assuming Steam’s library workflow applies.
- Check platform support, software and driver updates, system requirements, corrupted files, and interfering applications.
- Test online and offline only with the title’s own internet requirements in mind.
- Send the recorded format, rating, Proton version, symptom, and error text to the appropriate support channel.
Following the format-specific path prevents the most common diagnostic mistake: trying to repair a standalone Humble build with instructions intended for a Steam library entry. Once that distinction is clear, the remaining evidence—Deck rating, Proton test, file check, launch stage, and online requirement—usually shows which party can provide the next useful fix.
