If it cannot, focus on model compatibility, installation and the connector; if firmware sees it but Windows does not show a usable drive, troubleshoot the disk in Windows. A missing drive is not automatically a defective SSD, and recovery or formatting steps cannot fix a drive the firmware does not detect.
Start by identifying the handheld and the SSD
SSD size and interface requirements vary by handheld model. Check the manufacturer’s specification and service instructions for your exact model and variant before opening the device or buying a replacement drive. Do not assume one handheld’s compatibility applies to another.

For example, ASUS specifies a compact 2230 M.2 NVMe drive for the original ROG Ally. That specification should not be generalized to every handheld or every ROG Ally variant. See ASUS’s original ROG Ally SSD upgrade guide.

Check whether the SSD appears in firmware
Firmware or BIOS detection is the first important dividing line. If the drive is absent there, Windows settings, a drive letter, and operating-system recovery are not the place to start: the device must recognize the drive before those steps can make it usable.

ROG Ally BIOS access
On the ROG Ally, ASUS says to power on while holding or repeatedly pressing the volume-down button to enter BIOS. ASUS also documents a Windows route: Settings > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart Now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. These are Ally-specific instructions, not universal steps for handheld PCs. See the ROG Ally Series FAQ.
If firmware does not see the drive
Check that the SSD matches the exact model’s physical dimensions and interface. If it does, installation or seating may be the issue. Follow that model’s service guidance to inspect the installation and connector; do not force the drive or keep opening the device if you are unsure how to proceed. If it remains absent after compatibility and installation checks, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.

If Windows sees the disk, check its state in Disk Management
A disk can be detected by Windows without appearing as a usable drive in File Explorer. ASUS’s Windows SSD guidance distinguishes among an offline disk, a volume without a drive letter, and unallocated space; each calls for a different response. Open Disk Management and identify the correct disk before changing anything. See ASUS’s SSD troubleshooting guidance.
- Offline: If the intended disk is listed as offline, bringing it online may make it available.
- Volume without a drive letter: If Windows recognizes a volume but it has no letter, assign one so it can appear as a drive.
- Unallocated space: Create a new simple volume only if you have confirmed that the space is empty and does not contain data you need.
Creating or formatting a volume can erase data. If the SSD may contain files you want to keep, do not initialize, format, or create a volume just to make the warning disappear. Confirm the disk and its contents first.

Update Windows drivers and firmware when the disk is detected
For a Windows handheld whose SSD is visible to firmware but is not working correctly in Windows, ASUS recommends checking for current BIOS, Windows packages, and drivers. Its guidance also describes enabling or uninstalling the disk device in Device Manager, then restarting so Windows can reinstall the driver. These Windows steps do not address a drive missing from firmware.
Use operating-system recovery only after detection
OS recovery is appropriate when the SSD is detected but the operating system needs to be reinstalled—for example, after replacing the drive and preparing a fresh Windows installation. It does not solve a drive that the firmware cannot see.

Original ROG Ally
For the original ROG Ally, ASUS’s upgrade guide recommends updating BIOS before the swap and describes reinstalling Windows with ASUS Cloud Recovery after replacement. The guide lists a size 0 Phillips screwdriver and a guitar pick or other thin plastic tool. It also says to discharge the battery to 25% or below and remove microSD cards before opening the device. Follow the full model-specific guide rather than treating those preparation details as general instructions for other handhelds: ASUS ROG Ally SSD upgrade and Windows reinstall guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor SteamOS devices, consult Valve’s official SteamOS Installation and Repair resource for applicable installation and repair guidance. Do not apply the Ally’s BIOS or Cloud Recovery steps to a SteamOS handheld.

Keep microSD storage separate from SSD troubleshooting
The ROG Ally supports microSD storage, according to ASUS’s FAQ, but a microSD card is an alternative storage option—not a fix for an internal SSD the device cannot detect.
