Then check the correct update screen, internet connection, available storage and device software version before trying more disruptive fixes. Menu names vary by Android device, and the update schedule may depend on the manufacturer and carrier.
First, identify which update is stuck
Android has several different updates that can look similar. Check the wording on the notification or Settings screen before troubleshooting; a fix for one component may not apply to another.

- Google Play system update: An Android system update shown in the device’s software-update settings.
- Google Play services update: An update to core Android software, separate from the Play Store app. Google documents system services updates under Settings > profile picture > All services > Privacy & security > System services. Choose Google Play services under Available updates, if listed, and tap Update. Google’s system services instructions describe this route. Google Play services help says the service is supported on Android 7.0 (API level 24) and later.
- Google Play Store app update: An update to the Play Store itself. Use Play Store-specific recovery steps only when the Play Store is the item failing.
- Android version or software update: A broader operating-system update, checked in the device’s software-update settings.
How do I update Google Play system?
Use the phone’s Settings app rather than assuming the Play Store is where every system update lives. Google’s general route is Settings > System > Software updates, where you can check the status and follow the on-screen instructions. Some manufacturers place software updates under About phone or use different labels. See Google’s Android version and update instructions.

Try these low-risk fixes first
1. Check the connection
Make sure the phone has a working internet connection. Google recommends Wi-Fi when it is available. Once connected, check the update again.
2. Check available storage
Free up space if storage is nearly full. Google’s basic troubleshooting guidance flags less than 1 GB available as a sign that a device may be low on space; it is not a universal minimum storage requirement for every system update. Google notes that low storage can stop apps from downloading and installing. See Google Play’s basic troubleshooting steps.

3. Restart the device and retry
Restart the phone or tablet, then return to the relevant update screen and check again. A restart is a basic troubleshooting step; it does not guarantee that an update will install if the cause is storage, connectivity, availability or a device-specific issue.

4. Check for the Android software update
In Settings, open the software-update screen and follow the on-screen instructions to check for an update. Google advises using Wi-Fi and having at least 75% battery charge before updating. Update timing varies by device manufacturer and carrier, so an update may not be available to every device at the same time.

If the update is still stuck on installing
Before clearing any data, make sure you have identified the component that is failing. Clearing Google Play services data is not the same as clearing the Play Store cache, and the consequences are different.
Google Play services: leave data clearing until last
If Google Play services has an update listed in System services, try that update first. Google advises against clearing Google Play services data until other troubleshooting options have been tried. Doing so may remove saved information, including passwords and payment or transit cards. You may need to reauthenticate payment methods and sign in to your Google Account again. Read Google’s Google Play services guidance before taking this step.

Play Store: use Play Store recovery steps only for a Play Store problem
If the Play Store app itself is stuck downloading or updating, Google documents clearing the Play Store cache or data, and uninstalling then reinstalling Play Store updates. Clearing Play Store data may remove settings such as parental controls and password protection, which you may need to restore. These steps are for a Play Store issue, not a general fix for a Google Play system update. Follow Google’s Play Store troubleshooting instructions.
When to contact the device maker
If the update screen is missing, the same failure persists after the basic checks, or the available update does not match your device, contact the manufacturer’s support for your model. Android update availability and timing depend in part on the manufacturer and carrier, and Settings paths can vary between devices. Google’s Android update guidance explains that schedules vary by device maker and carrier.
