How to Fix a Garmin That Won’t Read an SD Card

A Garmin may fail to detect an SD card, or detect it without showing its map. The right fix depends on which problem you have and what your model supports.

If your Garmin will not recognize an SD card, first reseat it and check that it is the right card type and format for your exact device. If the card appears but map detail is missing, troubleshoot the map settings instead: a map can be disabled even when the card is readable. Avoid formatting a preloaded map card until you have confirmed what that would erase and what your model supports.

First, check whether Garmin detects the card

“Not recognizing” can mean two different things: the card is absent from the device, or the device sees it but does not display the map. The first points toward insertion, compatibility, formatting, or a reader problem. The second is more likely to involve map settings or map data.

Reseat the card

  1. Turn the Garmin off first if its manual instructs you to power down before inserting or removing media.
  2. Remove and reinsert the card, making sure it is fully seated. If the device has a card door, close and secure it.
  3. Power the device on and check again for the card or map.

Garmin specifically recommends checking full insertion and the card door on outdoor handhelds. See Garmin’s guidance for a purchased map card that does not show maps.

If the device does not detect the card

Check the card’s form factor, capacity, and filesystem against the manual for your Garmin model before replacing or reformatting it. Requirements vary by device, so there is no single card size or format that is right for every Garmin.

Verify capacity and filesystem

Garmin’s general formatting guidance recommends 32 GB or smaller cards for maps and other downloaded content. However, some models use exFAT, and Garmin notes that standard Windows formatting tools may not format cards of 64 GB or more as FAT32. These are model-dependent instructions, not universal compatibility guarantees. Consult the exact model manual and the relevant Garmin support pages: Formatting a microSD or SD memory card and Using a 64 GB microSD/SD memory card or larger.

Garmin warns: “An incorrectly formatted memory card is not compatible with the device and may display error messages or not be recognized at all.” Formatting erases data, and reformatting a preloaded map card could remove its contents. Do not format that card unless you have verified the consequences for that card and your device.

If the card is detected but the map is missing

Focus on map visibility rather than card compatibility. Garmin recommends checking for software updates and confirming that the desired map is enabled. On outdoor handhelds, multiple enabled maps can affect which information appears.

  • Check for and install applicable device software updates.
  • Open the map settings and verify that the map on the card is enabled.
  • Check the map detail setting if roads or other map information are missing.
  • For a preloaded handheld map card, use BaseCamp to check whether the map is visible there.

Garmin’s map-card troubleshooting steps cover these checks.

Use a JPEG test to distinguish map-data and reader problems

If your Garmin has a Picture Viewer, a JPEG test can help narrow down the cause. Garmin recommends placing a JPEG in a folder named JPEG on the card and opening it in the device’s Picture Viewer.

  • The image displays: Garmin says the reader is working, making a problem with the map data more likely.
  • The image does not display: The card or device reader may be at fault. Try another compatible card.

This test only applies to devices that support Picture Viewer. Follow Garmin’s map-card reading troubleshooting for details.

When to contact Garmin Support

If another compatible card also fails to read, contact Garmin product support. A second card failing can point to a device-reader issue, so buying another card is not a reliable fix by itself. If the card works but the map does not, provide the device model and map-card details when asking for help.
