Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your gaming mouse moves too far on screen, lower its DPI first; if it skips or stops tracking, test a different surface, inspect the sensor opening, and check its power or connection. Work through the checks below in order: they help distinguish a sensitivity setting from a surface, wireless, or connection problem without assuming the mouse is faulty.
First, tell excessive speed from tracking loss
Move the mouse slowly and steadily. If the pointer follows reliably but travels farther on screen than you intend, the issue is likely sensitivity, not a sensor that has stopped tracking. If the pointer jumps, misses movement, or freezes intermittently, check the surface and connection instead.

When movement is consistent but too fast
- Lower the mouse DPI. Use the mouse’s gaming software or onboard controls if your model provides them. Logitech recommends lowering DPI in its mouse software for an overly fast pointer; the exact control and available DPI settings depend on the mouse. Logitech’s guidance
- Then adjust operating-system pointer speed if needed. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and lower the mouse pointer speed slider. This changes pointer response at the operating-system level; it is a separate adjustment from the mouse’s DPI. Microsoft’s mouse troubleshooting guidance
When movement skips or stops
Do not start by changing sensitivity: a lower DPI may make movement smaller, but it does not establish why tracking is being lost. Test the surface, sensor opening, power, and connection in the following sections.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTest the mouse on a different surface
Move the mouse across a plain sheet of white paper or a different mouse pad. If tracking improves, the original surface is a likely contributor. This is a useful free diagnostic; try paper or a pad you already own before considering a purchase. Logitech advises avoiding glass or see-through, reflective, wood-grained or grooved, and very glossy surfaces for its gaming mice. Logitech’s surface guidance and sensor and surface troubleshooting
#1 Best Overall
- The next-generation optical HERO sensor delivers incredible performance and up to 10x the power efficiency over previous generations, with 400 IPS precision and up to 12,000 DPI sensitivity
- Ultra-fast LIGHTSPEED wireless technology gives you a lag-free gaming experience, delivering incredible responsiveness and reliability with 1 ms report rate for competition-level performance
- G305 wireless mouse boasts an incredible 250 hours of continuous gameplay on just 1 AA battery; switch to Endurance mode via Logitech G HUB software and extend battery life up to 9 months
- Wireless does not have to mean heavy, G305 lightweight mouse provides high maneuverability coming in at only 3.4 oz thanks to efficient lightweight mechanical design and ultra-efficient battery usage
- The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere
A different surface improving tracking points toward a compatibility problem between that surface and the sensor; it does not prove the mouse is damaged or guarantee that a new pad will solve the issue.
Check the sensor opening for debris
Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor opening for visible dust or lint. Logitech recommends checking for debris as part of tracking troubleshooting. Its cited guidance does not specify a cleaning product or disassembly method, so do not assume the mouse should be opened or cleaned with a particular substance. Check power and wireless placement
If the mouse is wireless, recharge it or replace its batteries, as applicable, then test again. For a Bluetooth mouse, verify that it is powered on and paired with the computer. Microsoft also recommends checking the reported battery status when pointer response is slow or incorrect. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance
If the mouse uses a wireless receiver
Try moving the receiver closer to the mouse and away from nearby wireless equipment. Logitech recommends keeping its receiver within 20 cm of the mouse and at least 2 meters from routers and other 2.4 GHz wireless devices. Those distances are Logitech guidance for its products, not universal limits for every wireless mouse. Temporarily disconnecting nearby wireless devices can also help you check whether interference is involved. Logitech’s wireless troubleshooting guidance

Check the connection and isolate the computer
For a wired mouse
Connect it directly to a computer USB port rather than through a hub, then see whether tracking changes. Logitech recommends this direct-port check for a wired Logitech mouse. Logitech’s connection guidance
For a Bluetooth mouse
Confirm power and pairing; if needed, remove and pair the mouse again using the computer’s Bluetooth settings. Testing the mouse with another computer can help distinguish a problem with the mouse from one involving the original PC. Microsoft also recommends restarting the PC when pointer response is slow or incorrect. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance

Use surface tuning only if your model supports it
Some gaming mice have software that calibrates the sensor for a particular surface, but this is not a universal feature. Logitech documents surface tuning for supported gaming mice in Logitech Gaming Software version 8.87 or later; its procedure lets users choose a preset or create a custom surface setting. Check current instructions for your exact model before looking for this control. Logitech’s tracking guidance and Logitech’s surface-tuning instructions
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to contact the manufacturer
If the problem continues across surfaces and after power and connection checks, look up the exact mouse model and follow its current manufacturer support instructions. These checks can narrow down possible causes, but they do not establish a universal diagnosis or repair procedure for a damaged sensor. Avoid buying replacement parts or opening the mouse based only on symptoms; the appropriate next step depends on the model and the fault.
