That quick check helps separate a cable or power problem from a pairing or host issue. Controller steps vary by model, so use the maker’s instructions rather than a universal button combination.
Start by identifying the controller and connection
Note the controller model, the device you’re connecting it to, and whether you’re using USB, Bluetooth, or another wireless method. Also note whether it fails during initial setup or disconnects after working. A DualSense, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and Xbox controller can have different pairing and recovery procedures.

Check power and try a direct USB connection
- Charge the controller or replace its batteries, if applicable.
- For a wired test, connect directly to the console or PC instead of using a hub or dock.
- Use a cable with the correct connector that supports data. A power-only cable may charge a controller without providing a wired data connection. Prefer the supplied or model-specified cable when available.
A working USB connection can help narrow down the cause, and some controllers also use USB as an official pairing route. Sony documents USB pairing for DualSense on PS5, and Nintendo documents USB connection pairing for the Switch Pro Controller: PlayStation controller support and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller pairing guidance.
Compare wired and wireless behavior
Try both connection methods if the controller supports them. Treat the results as clues, not a definitive diagnosis:

- USB works, wireless fails: Check wireless pairing, the host’s remembered controller entries, host settings, and possible interference.
- Wireless works, USB fails: Check the cable, connector, and USB port; confirm the cable supports data.
- Both methods fail: Recheck charge or batteries, then consult the controller maker’s troubleshooting instructions.
- The controller fails on multiple supported hosts: Persistent trouble across devices may require the maker’s service process.
Forget the old wireless pairing and pair again
- On the console or PC, remove or forget the controller from the saved Bluetooth or wireless device list.
- Put the controller into pairing mode using the instructions for its exact model and generation.
- Start pairing from the host’s Bluetooth or controller settings, following the maker’s instructions.
Button combinations and reset procedures differ between controller families and generations. Don’t try a generic reset sequence; check the official instructions for your model first.
Use the steps for your platform
DualSense controller and PS5
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console with the included USB cable.
- Press the PS button. Sony says the player indicator lights after the light bar blinks.
Sony states that a DualSense can pair with only one PS5 console at a time. To use it with another PS5, pair it with that console again using the USB procedure. See Sony’s DualSense and controller support instructions.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Nintendo’s official guide covers both USB connection pairing and wireless pairing. Follow the instructions for your Switch model and check the controller’s charge. Nintendo identifies the official Pro Controller as model HAC-013. See Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing guidance.

Windows 11 PC
Microsoft documents USB connections for most Xbox and PlayStation controllers and many third-party controllers, as well as Bluetooth pairing. Try a connection method supported by your controller, then check whether Windows recognizes it before troubleshooting a particular game. Xbox Wireless Controller
Use current official Xbox Support instructions for your exact controller and host. Reset and firmware procedures are model- and software-specific, so don’t rely on steps intended for another controller.

If the controller still fails after checking power, testing a direct data-capable USB connection, and recreating the wireless pairing, consult the manufacturer’s current troubleshooting or service instructions. If it works on another supported host, focus next on the original host’s connection settings; if it fails across hosts and connection methods, the controller or its power source may need attention.
