If your Galaxy S21 FE won’t install a software update, first determine whether the update is not being offered or whether a download or installation has failed. Check Samsung’s on-phone update screen, follow any specific error message, and then try Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac if the phone-based attempt still fails. Avoid factory resets or unofficial firmware tools until safer steps are exhausted.
First check: Is the update missing, or is installation failing?
Open Settings > Software update > Download and install (the wording may vary) to check for an update. If the phone reports that it is up to date or shows no update, that is an availability issue—not an installation failure. If an update is offered but the download or install stops, use the error message and the steps below.

If no update is offered
Software releases can arrive in waves, and the original carrier handles updates for a phone sold for use on a specific carrier. A newly announced release may therefore not appear on every Galaxy S21 FE at once. Check the release information from the carrier the phone was originally associated with, and check again later if the update was just announced. Do not infer your phone’s eligibility or release date from another carrier’s rollout. Samsung also notes that an originally carrier-associated unlocked phone may need a SIM from that original carrier for an update to appear. Samsung’s update troubleshooting guidance explains carrier availability and other update checks.
Connect to Wi-Fi before retrying: updates can be large, and some carriers require Wi-Fi for the download. Samsung’s One UI 7 troubleshooting page includes the Galaxy S21 FE among the models covered for that release, but that does not establish that One UI 7—or any particular build—is available for every S21 FE. Availability depends on factors such as carrier, region, and software configuration. Check Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance alongside your carrier’s current release information.

Fix a failed download or installation
Follow the error shown on the phone
- Not enough storage: Free space by removing or moving files and apps, then retry. Use the amount requested by the phone; there is no universal free-space figure that applies to every update.
- Download stopped or did not finish: Samsung says you may be able to resume it from the notification. If it cannot resume, reconnect to Wi-Fi and try again.
- No clear error: Retry while connected to Wi-Fi. If the update has only just become available for your carrier, wait and check again rather than assuming the phone is defective.
Samsung’s software update troubleshooting steps cover storage prompts, interrupted downloads, and update availability.
Try the update with Samsung Smart Switch
Smart Switch is Samsung’s computer-based alternative when an update does not complete over the phone. Use a Windows PC or Mac with Smart Switch installed, and a USB data cable.

- Open Samsung Smart Switch on the computer.
- Connect the Galaxy S21 FE by USB and wait for Smart Switch to detect it. Use the supplied cable if available.
- If the app displays Update, select it and follow the prompts.
- Keep the phone connected and do not use it until the update completes. The phone will restart during the process.
If the computer does not maintain a connection, try another USB cable or port, choose the phone’s file-transfer USB mode if prompted, or use another computer. Samsung notes that some Verizon USB update modes are incompatible with Smart Switch. A replacement cable is relevant only if you do not have a working data cable or suspect a connection fault; it will not resolve a carrier or software-eligibility issue. See Samsung’s Smart Switch update and connection guidance.

If a computer-based update fails, Samsung documents Emergency Software Recovery and Reset in Smart Switch. These recovery steps can erase data. Back up important information before choosing a factory data reset. If recovery must continue on another computer, Samsung says the recovery code is available from the computer where the update failed. Follow the instructions in Samsung’s Smart Switch recovery guidance.
If the phone no longer boots normally after the failed update, Samsung says service is required. Contact Samsung support or use an authorized service route. Do not attempt an unverified firmware download or generic flashing tool as a substitute.
