What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with Settings > Network on your Fire TV Stick and check Network Status. It can show whether the weak link is between the Stick and your router or between the router and the internet. Then restart the Stick and network equipment before changing apps, buying hardware, or resetting the device.
Find out whether the problem is Wi-Fi, internet, or one app
On your Fire TV Stick, open Settings > Network and select your network to view Network Status. Amazon says the tool separates the Fire TV-to-router connection from the router-to-internet connection; compatible devices may also offer a speed test and more network information. See Amazon’s Network Status guide.

- If the Stick-to-router link is weak, focus on Wi-Fi signal and placement.
- If the router-to-internet link is the problem, check the modem, router, and internet service.
- If both links look healthy, test another app and another device on the same network to see whether the trouble is limited to one service.
Try these fixes in order
1. Restart the Fire TV Stick and refresh its Wi-Fi connection
- Unplug the Fire TV Stick from power, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- If buffering continues, open Settings > Network, select the connected Wi-Fi network, and turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
- If needed, forget the network and reconnect by selecting it and entering its password.
These are among Amazon’s recommended first steps for Fire TV network trouble. Menu labels can vary by device and software version. See Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

- Unplug both the modem and router and wait one minute.
- Reconnect the modem first. Wait for it to reconnect to the internet.
- Reconnect the router and wait for it to come online, then try streaming again.
Restarting network equipment can help if the router-to-internet connection is failing. If other devices are also offline, the issue may be a wider network outage rather than a faulty Stick.

3. Check Wi-Fi signal and coverage
If Network Status points to a weak Stick-to-router connection, move the Fire TV Stick and router closer together if practical. Retest after moving either device. In a larger home, broader Wi-Fi coverage may be relevant; Amazon mentions mesh networking as an option, but it will not resolve a problem caused by an app or an internet-service interruption.
4. Check whether just one streaming app is affected
If other apps play normally and other devices stream on the same network, follow the affected app’s own troubleshooting instructions rather than assuming the Fire TV’s Wi-Fi is at fault. For Prime Video, Amazon recommends checking that Fire TV software is current, restarting the Fire TV and network equipment, and clearing Prime Video’s cache and data. Use Amazon’s Prime Video troubleshooting guide for the applicable steps. Other apps may have different menus and fixes.

Check bandwidth and 4K requirements only if they apply
Amazon’s Fire TV guidance states that 4K Ultra HD requires a high-speed internet connection of at least 15 Mbps. Amazon also notes that some apps, such as Netflix, recommend at least 20 Mbps. These figures apply to 4K playback guidance and an example app recommendation—not to every streaming quality level—and meeting them does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. See Amazon’s 4K streaming guidance.
If buffering is limited to 4K content, Amazon recommends checking bandwidth and equipment, improving router proximity, or trying Ethernet. A wired connection may help when Wi-Fi coverage is the demonstrated weak point, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or a single app’s problem.

Consider Ethernet or mesh only when the diagnosis supports it
| Option | When it may help | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet | The Network Status result or placement test points to a weak wireless link. | Wired networking and adapter needs vary by Fire TV model. Check your exact device before buying an adapter; Amazon does not establish one universal adapter for all Sticks. See Amazon’s 4K connectivity guidance and setup connectivity guidance. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi | Several areas of a larger home have poor Wi-Fi coverage. | First confirm that the trouble is coverage-related; mesh will not address every cause of buffering. |
Factory-reset only after simpler steps fail
Amazon places factory reset after checking network status, restarting the Fire TV and refreshing Wi-Fi, and restarting the modem and router. Reset instructions depend on device type, so follow Amazon’s instructions for your specific Fire TV device rather than using a generic button sequence.
