How to Fix a Fingerprint Sensor That Isn’t Working in Windows 11

If Windows 11 fingerprint sign-in fails, first determine whether the sensor is detected. Then follow the right steps for recognition failures, missing readers, drivers, or external-reader security settings.

First identify whether Windows can see your fingerprint reader. If the reader appears and simply rejects your finger, clean the sensor and re-register your fingerprint. If Windows says it cannot find a compatible scanner or the fingerprint option is missing, check device detection and install the driver and firmware package for your exact PC model. Keep your PIN or password available while troubleshooting.

Start with the symptom—and keep another sign-in method available

Sign in with your PIN or password if fingerprint sign-in fails. Note the exact error message: an enrolled finger that is not recognized points to a different fix than a missing fingerprint option or a message that Windows cannot find a compatible scanner. Microsoft recommends using a PIN or password when fingerprint sign-in does not work, then setting up fingerprint recognition again. Microsoft’s Windows Hello troubleshooting guidance covers these basic recovery steps.

  • Fingerprint option is available, but scans fail: start with a clean, dry sensor and finger, then re-enroll.
  • Fingerprint option is missing, or Windows cannot find a compatible scanner: check whether Windows detects the reader and whether the correct device-specific driver is installed.
  • You use an external USB reader: check the Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security setting as well as detection and drivers.

If the reader appears but does not recognize your finger

Clean the sensor and your finger

Make sure the sensor and the finger you use are clean and dry. For Surface devices, Microsoft recommends wiping the sensor with a lint-free cloth and says: “Do not use glass cleaner or other cleaning chemicals on the fingerprint sensor.” If you have a Surface Pro keyboard with a fingerprint reader, detach and reattach the keyboard as part of the check. Microsoft’s Surface-specific instructions also advise using the originally enrolled finger, placing it flat in the middle of the sensor, and applying light pressure.

Remove and add your fingerprint again

Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) > Add a finger. If an old enrollment is interfering, remove it first, then enroll the finger again. Capture different angles rather than registering only one exact placement. Microsoft also recommends adding more than one fingerprint if that is useful for how you use the device. See Microsoft’s Windows Hello troubleshooting tips.

#1 Best Overall
USB Fingerprint Reader for Windows 10/11 ONLY, Windows Hello Fingerprint Scanner for PC Login, Match-in-Sensor Security, Plug & Play (Not for Mac/Linux)
  • Windows Hello–Based Fingerprint Login: Designed exclusively for Windows Hello on Windows 10/11 PCs. Unlock your computer with a single touch and replace traditional passwords with fast, reliable fingerprint sign-in. The fingerprint reader provides biometric input to the Windows system only.
  • Clear Authentication Boundary: This fingerprint reader does not communicate directly with websites or applications. Any sign-in experience for apps, websites, or services depends entirely on Windows Hello and the operating system, not the fingerprint reader hardware itself. Availability varies by system and service.
  • Match-in-Sensor Security & Local Privacy Protection: Supports Match-in-Sensor security processing, where fingerprint matching is performed inside the sensor. Fingerprint data is stored locally on your device and never leaves your PC. No fingerprint images or biometric data are uploaded, synced, or stored externally.
  • True Plug & Play on Official Windows Systems: No software or third-party apps required. Automatically recognized by Windows Hello on genuine Windows 10/11 systems. If Windows Hello is missing or disabled, a system update or configuration may be required — this is a Windows setting, not a hardware issue.
  • Desktop-Friendly Design with Extension Cable: Includes a 4ft USB extension cable for flexible desktop placement. Angled sensor surface allows natural finger positioning for comfortable daily use. Supports up to 10 fingerprints, suitable for personal PCs or shared household computers with multiple Windows user accounts.

Check for driver updates

If the reader is listed but recognition still fails after re-enrollment, check Windows Update and the computer maker’s support page or support app for a driver update for your exact model. The sensor and enrollment behavior depend partly on device-specific information supplied through its driver, so do not install a package based only on a generic Windows 11 search.

If Windows cannot find the scanner or the fingerprint option is missing

Check Device Manager

Open Device Manager and look for the fingerprint reader, commonly under Biometric devices. If it appears with a warning, or if Windows Settings still offers no fingerprint option, check Windows Update and then the support page or support app for your exact PC model. Install the relevant biometric driver and firmware package provided for that model, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Surface owners can use Microsoft’s Surface troubleshooting guidance and check for Surface driver and firmware updates. For other computers, use that manufacturer’s support channel. Avoid choosing a driver just because its name mentions a familiar sensor vendor: without the PC model and sensor details, a specific package cannot be identified reliably.

If the reader is absent

If Device Manager does not list the reader, an unrelated generic driver is not a reliable diagnosis. Ask the PC maker to confirm that the model supports fingerprint sign-in on your Windows version and to check the applicable BIOS or firmware settings and biometric package. If the reader remains unavailable after the correct OEM driver and firmware are installed, contact the PC or reader maker; Microsoft says it does not support peripherals it did not sell. A missing reader by itself does not establish that the hardware has failed.

If you use an external USB fingerprint reader

Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) can prevent a third-party reader from signing in when the reader is not ESS-capable. The relevant setting and its meaning depend on the Windows 11 release, so read the actual label before changing it. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Additional settings. Microsoft’s third-party reader guidance describes the version-dependent controls and compatibility limits.

Windows 11 24H2 or newer

Look for the Enhanced sign-in security toggle. Microsoft says turning ESS off may allow a non-ESS-capable external reader to work. Disabling ESS removes existing ESS enrollments and associated credentials, such as passkeys; those can be provisioned again. The feature is rolling out in phases, and an organization may prevent use of non-ESS devices. Read Microsoft’s Enhanced Sign-in Security instructions before changing the setting.

Windows 11 23H2

On 23H2, Microsoft documents a differently worded control: Sign in with an external camera or fingerprint reader. Microsoft’s ESS overview explains that turning this toggle on disables ESS and permits compatible external devices. Do not apply the newer toggle’s wording or assumed on/off behavior to this older control; follow the label and instructions for your build. Microsoft’s ESS page describes the distinction.

What ESS compatibility means

“Windows Hello compatible” alone does not establish that a reader supports ESS. Microsoft’s technical documentation says an ESS-capable fingerprint sensor must use match-on-chip, have a Microsoft-issued certificate burned into the device during manufacturing, and include driver and firmware support for ESS. With ESS enabled, sensors that do not support it are not enumerated by the Windows Biometric framework. See Microsoft Learn’s ESS technical overview.

Yoidesu USB Fingerprint Reader for Windows Hello, Plug & Play Security Key
  • Windows Hello for Windows 10/11 - Only works with Windows Hello on Windows 10/11 PCs and laptops. Plug the USB fingerprint reader into your computer and sign in with one touch. Not compatible with Mac, macOS, Linux or Chrome OS.
  • Plug-and-Play Fingerprint Login - No extra app is needed on most genuine Windows systems. Insert the USB fingerprint scanner, set up fingerprint sign-in through Windows Hello, and unlock your PC without typing long passwords every time.
  • Fast 0.5s 360° Recognition - Capacitive fingerprint technology supports quick authentication in about 0.5 seconds. 360° touch recognition helps read your fingerprint from different angles for faster, smoother daily login.
  • Compact Scanner for PC & Laptop + Multi-User Support - Small, lightweight USB design works well for desktops, laptops, office PCs and shared home computers without built-in fingerprint sensors. Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per user account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access.
  • Important Notes — Please Read Before Purchase - Support for Win10/11 32/64 bit original system. Not fit for the streamlined version. The Lite version has trimmed the biometric component, the fingerprint login device will not be able to recognize the Hello fingerprint option. It merely supports Windows Hello, does not fit for encrypting USB drives/files, and can merely support Windows system. It is recommended to prioritize plugging into the USB 2.0 interface of the motherboard. USB 3.0 docking stations are prone to power supply/interference and unstable recognition.

If the setting is absent, the PC may not meet the requirements, the incompatible sensor may not be detected, or organizational policy may hide the option. On a managed device, ask IT before changing security settings. If you are unsure whether your reader is ESS-capable, check with its maker.

When to contact the manufacturer

Contact the PC or reader maker if Windows still cannot detect the reader or fingerprint sign-in remains unavailable after you have installed the correct model-specific driver and firmware and, for an external reader, checked the applicable ESS control. Provide the exact Windows version, computer model, reader model if external, and any Device Manager warning or error message. The right driver, supported Windows versions, and firmware settings depend on the hardware; the symptom alone does not identify a hardware failure or a Windows update bug.

Do not reset Windows as an early troubleshooting step. If the problem began after a recent app, driver, or update, tell the manufacturer when it started and ask for device-specific recovery advice before taking broader system-restoration steps.
